The festival had been over for a few nights, but the effervescent glow of the fireflies and the lanterns had not gone out just yet. A lone dustling wandered about the pastures, outside the town, where a few broken lanterns lay muddled in the grass. She sat beside a rainbow one, her own fur coat reflecting the same cheerful, beautiful colors of the debris. The sky was warm and inviting, and she wished that she could fly. Saryn believed she was alone, and took a moment to admire the beauty of the clouds as they wove themselves through the sky and absorbed the sunset's final rays.

Gyousei had spent the whole festival in the labs, trying to coax Jahn to come outside and be sociable. He loved his human 'caretaker' dearly, but the man was too much like a brother too often and he often found himself taking care of the human instead of the other way around. So he'd missed the festival and all its glory to spend his time laying beside Jahn's chair in silence. He had left the labs this evening, distraught at the human's sheer misunderstanding of everything he tried to say. He could not see how someone so intelligent could be so... dense.
He found himself wandering away from the town, distancing himself from what he knew and loved. He hated that he had missed the festival, hated that Jahn had missed it, hated... well, he hated a lot of things right now. And what he wanted was the night. He loved the sky in all its aspects and glory, and perhaps that affinity stemmed from his own coloration. In his walk, he passed by the remnants of the festival's activities; lanterns and discarded pieces of food, scraps of trash and old footprints. It was by chance that he spotted the other dustling, her coat seeming to glow with its bright colors.
Gyousei paused in midstep, uncertain of whether he should approach her or continue on his own way. She seemed to be content to sit alone, and he wondered if his own path was better walked alone for now as well. He had much to think about, afterall. But at the same time, the opportunity to speak with another of his kind - for she was surely one of his own - was something he didn't get to have very often.
Taking a breath that filled his lungs with air, he slinked towards her. In a meek voice, he spoke. "Excuse me? Would you... happen to mind some company this night?" He was probably making an absolute fool of himself, but at least then he could say he tried.

It was impossible for her to ignore such a quiet question, but she almost wanted to be left alone. She had begun to wonder if her father, Caiden, could also see the same beautiful sky she saw, wherever he was. Saryn had been worried, and gotten over it. She knew he'd be all right.
With a small sigh-- determined, not irate-- she turned her face towards the male who approached her and put on her best, most accommodating smile. "No, I would not mind." She turned her face back to the sky. Father.. why did you leave without telling me? The sky turned purple and fuchsia, and she could almost see his face. Withou turning back to him, she continued, "You look a little worn. Is everything all right?"

Gyousei bowed his head slightly, suddenly feeling a little self-conscious. Did he really look so bad? Resisting the sudden urge to stretch his neck back and set his coat into order, the dustling stepped closer to Saryn and gingerly took a seat near her. He had noted that she seemed distracted, and wondered before seating himself if perhaps he would be better off to leave her to her own thoughts. He dismissed that thought, tilting his nose towards the sky in the general area she was looking.
"It has been a stressful time for my human companion. It is merely frustrating that at the times when we need it most, we do not speak the same language."

Saryn wrapped her tail about herself, a sign that she was somewhat of a hard code to break-- her heart was a locket, and she had long since tossed that key down the gutter.
"I see," she replied. She inwardly felt that she could relate, but then again, she knew her 'human' was so busy and utterly in love with that one angelic dustling that she never received any attention. She couldn't talk to her even if she herself spoke English. "Sometimes it is better to have no human at all."
Or no one at all. She wondered who would care if she left and went out to find her father.

At her words, the feather-fur around his ruff rose slightly in disarray. If he had had a little less dignity, he might have even gone so far as to squawk. "It's nothing like that. I love Jahn a great deal, but he puts me in the position where it's me looking after him and he won't listen." He huffed slightly, his chest expanding as his ruff settled nearly back into place.
"It's..." He shook his head this time, his beak not wanting to form the words that his head had only half-made. "He doesn't even seem to know what's best for himself, at times. I feel like I'm babysitting all the time. And..." This time he couldn't resist the urge to turn his head back and straighten a few pieces of his pale coat. "It's frustrating, when I don't do things because of him. Because I don't want to leave him alone." His tail fidgeted behind him, gaze locked into the stars this time as if willing them to give an answer.

Saryn shut her eyes, still facing the sky. "You seem to nervous, and hectic. Your aura is muddled. I cannot say having a human is doing you any good." She realized she probably sounded harsh, but Saryn always spoke her mind. "But if you love your human and care that much, then I suppose you'd never leave him." She sighed, opening her eyes and eyeing the ground thoughtfully. "Perhaps you need to take a break from him? Humans have an uncanny way of surviving without their dustlings." She felt something inside twinge a little.

Gyousei seemed at first to want to snap back at her, but he bit his tongue and peered down at the ground beneath his feet in thought for a few moments. Perhaps she was right, for he was surely to the point of preening his own fur out over Jahn. As she continued to speak, his head rose to gaze her.
"Perhaps... perhaps you are right. If I left him, for even a little while..." He shook out his ruff feathers again, gaze drifting towards the horizon as he thought things over for himself. It was something he had never really considered. Where would he go, what would he do? How long would he leave for?

Saryn got to her feet and turned around, looking into Gyousei's eyes. "I can tell it would do you good if you went soul-searching." She looked him over once more and began to slowly pass him, making sure it was quite the dramatic moment. She too had a bit of soul-searching to do, and it didn't include being in the company of another dustling, no matter how much she enjoyed the feeling of speaking to someone new that wasn't Vestakia or her boneheaded human.

The male dustling looked away from her as she turned to leave, his own feathery tail shifting from side to side slightly behind him. He had understood that he was probably intruding when he approached in the beginning, and wasn't going to interrupt her path of retreat. "Thank you, for your time." Though his words were spoken towards the night sky and the distant horizon, they were gentle and truthful. Sometimes, all one needed was a brief moment to speak to another for clarity. And, afterall, perhaps one day they would meet under better circumstances for them both.
