In the original, Japanese version of the game, her name was, indeed, Aerith. Aeris was simply a mistranslation.

Raziel Seraphan I thought Aerith in japanese was read Aeris... I'm just going on what I've heard from those who've played the Japanese version. That's just one of the many mistranslations in the game...like Tseng's supposed offing that never actually happened. Kinda makes you wonder how little they paid the translators...

Aeris sounds prettier. Aerith sounds like a constipated person no offense to her.

Raziel Seraphan I thought Aerith in japanese was read Aeris... No, it's spelled Earisu, because the Japanese charecter "su" represents both "th" and "s."Alexis-the-SOLDIER6 Well I lik ethe Nmae Aeris(cause i use it for my Roleplays). But I thought it mean something, I just cnat think of it. It means Earth in Japanese, according to Wikipedia. .

Thatt mistranslation may be true. Because there was another mistranslation like when you were fighting the scorpion and it says "Attack when it's tail is up" when it was supposed to be "Don't attack when its tail is up"

Aeris is just misspelled.
Actually Aerith has to do something with Earth but it should also sound like a human name, and that name was Iris.
Iris is a flower.Which explains her job as flower seller in Midgar. But Iris is also the messenger of the gods...and it also means rainbow....rainbows take place in the sky.Just like Clouds...theyre also there.
I have read this in a german article..(I am austrian) and i was really intrested in it,since m own name is Iris.

It was a mistranslation because of the last syllable being pronounced as 'su' for the 'th' sound. Wikipedia has more in detail biggrin
