With the movie having just been released in the States yesterday, I figured I would start a topic on The Hitchhikers' Guide to the Galaxy. So has anyone seen the movie, or read the books, or heard the radio program, or seen the tv show? If you haven't at least read the book, I urge anyone who likes sci-fi to do so. It's one of the funniest books I've ever read and the movie was a lot of fun and pretty true to the spirit of the books. Any other fans here?

As long as I don't get turned into yarn too much I'm okay with one.

Read the books, seen the TV/ and the hard to find on video play. And heard the radio show. Out of all of them I prefer the Radio just because of the events toward the end with the giant gold statues and the bird people and the clones and such, quite funny.
Have yet to see the movie but I am one of the largest Hitchhiker's that I know of.

I've read the first four books, about to start the fifth one. I've seen a few episodes of the TV show and listened to one episode of the radio show, but I couldn't tell you which one it was because it's been a long time.
I want to see the movie, but I know I'm going to be disappointed. The people I've talked to that have read the book and seen the movie said it was crappy, and the people I've talked to that saw the movie without reading the book said it was just confusing.

Kind of like the books, really like the radio plays and haven't seen the film yet. I don't feel any strong urge to either, is that wrong?
For me Hitchiker's will always be about listening to the tapes of the radio serial on long car journeys and laughing like a fool.

I've still to see it. I just hate paying so much money on a ticket that is pretty much half of what the DVD will cost when it comes out.

I love the book, and I think the movie did it justice. It wasn't EXACTLY the same but you can't expect a Sin City all the time. It left it open for a sequel and they left the whale scene in there, which is my favorite part of the books.

Jennifer_Walters I've still to see it. I just hate paying so much money on a ticket that is pretty much half of what the DVD will cost when it comes out. I have such inner battles over that problem. I love the comunal experience of going to the cinema...but then I know if I love the film I see enough then I'll want it on DVD... maybe my ideal film experience is going to the cinema but only kinda liking the film. But then that doesn't sound quite right. Also, the films I skipped at the cinema intending to catch up on them later is growing out of controll...I've yet to see House of Flying Daggers, Garden State, or I heart Huckabees.

Something I've been wondering...does the film just cover the first book or go into material from any of the others?

My cinema experience is always ruined by the audience. Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon was spoiled by people laughing at the flying parts of the film. I've watched heaps of kung-fu films so I wasn't surprised when they leapt into the air and started bouncing off bamboo shoots. Or worse there's always some bugger in the front coughing with a dry throat or the rustling of sweets. You're the same as me, last film I actually went to see was The Incredibles and that was only because my Dad was paying me in.
