Likes: Reading, Hiking, Swimming, TV, Sleeping, Food, Comic Books, Monster Movies (especially Godzilla), Animals, Science, Video Games, Internet (couldn't live without it), Hangin' Out, MST3K, Paintball, Mythical Animals, his book project

Dislikes: Being Made Fun Of, Being Left Out, Eating Vegetables (green beans, it burns! gonk ), Being Forced To Do Something, Having To Take Drugs, Being Rushed, Being Talked Down To, Being Treated Like A Kid

Personality: At first glance, Erik appears very stoic, showing very little emotion, but once he comes out of his shell, he's fun to be around and has a great sense of humor, in fact, he's always wanted to do stand-up comedy. Erik's been diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome (AS), which causes him to be very antisocial. Usually he's too shy or nervous to talk to most people, even his parents. Obviously, he has few friends because of his shyness, and he keeps those friends that his does have very close.

For most of his life, Erik's always been the black sheep, not really fitting in anywhere, so he's always wanted to fit in. Although normally easygoing, Erik can occasionally have a nasty temper. A big science geek, Erik approaches most everything in a scientific manner, believing that everything has reasonable explanation, from dragons and unicorns to God and the Devil. Although he may seem young, Erik is very mature for someone his age and rarely ever gets into trouble, but he's not perfect. Occasionally, Erik can get a little too hyper and out-of-control, which leads him to trouble.

One of Erik's greatest passions is animals. Being quite smart for his age, he has a large number of animal books, many of them being college level or higher.

Habits: As a rule, Erik spends his time either with his nose in a book or taking a long walk in the woods to clear his mind, but when he's not, he usually is playing video games or chatting on the internet, one of the few places where he's social. Outside of the web is a totally different story, of course. Here, he's usually the target of many jokes. Too unconfident to stand up for himself, he usually takes it without a fight. Even at home he has problems. His younger brothers constantly rip on him, causing him many self-confidence issues.

Another issue he has is girls. Erik has tried many times to ask girls out, but they all automatically rejected him. Scarred by this he's now too nervous to ask out girls that do like him, he's just too afraid of being rejected again and having to face that pain, but he really does want to have a relationship.

How Did He Get To The Island?: Recognizing Erik as potential subject, Feral Labs sent his family a letter of invitation to a retreat for teens in the Caribbean. In an effort to get their reclusive son out of the house, Erik's parents signed their son up and a week later, he was flown out to Florida, where he would be picked up by a helicopter and taken to the 'retreat'.

Animal Info

Ivory-billed Woodpecker (Campephilus principalis)

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

The Ivory-billed Woodpecker is one of the largest woodpecker species in the world. The largest is the closely related Imperial Woodpecker (C. imperialis) of western Mexico, another rare species which is very likely to be extinct. The Ivory-billed measures from 48 to 53 cm (19 to 21 in) in length and 450 to 570 g (1.0 to 1.25 lb) in weight, with short legs and feet ending in large, curved claws.

The bird is shiny blue-black with extensive white markings on its neck and on both the upper and lower trailing edges of its wings. It has a pure white bill and displays a prominent top crest, red in the male and black in the female. These characteristics distinguish it from the smaller and darker-billed Pileated Woodpecker. Like all woodpeckers, it has a strong and straight chisel-like bill and a long, mobile, hard-tipped, barbed tongue. Its drum is a single or double rap, and its alarm call, a kent or hant, sounds like a toy trumpet repeated in a series or as a double note.

Ivory-bills are known to prefer thick hardwood swamps and pine forests, with large amounts of dead and decaying trees. Prior to the American Civil War, much of the Southern United States was covered in vast tracts of primeval hardwood forests that were suitable as habitat for the bird. At that time, the Ivory-billed Woodpecker ranged from east Texas to North Carolina, and from southern Illinois to Florida and Cuba. After the Civil War, the timber industry deforested millions of acres in the South, leaving only sparse isolated tracts of suitable habitat.

The Ivory-billed Woodpecker feeds mainly on the larvae of wood-boring beetles, but also eats seeds, fruit, and other insects. The bird uses its enormous white bill to hammer, wedge, and peel the bark off dead trees to find the insects. Surprisingly, these birds need about 25 km² (10 square miles) per pair so they can find enough food to feed their young and themselves. Hence, they occur at low densities even in healthy populations. The more common Pileated Woodpecker may compete for food with this species.

The Ivory-billed Woodpecker is thought to pair for life. Pairs are also known to travel together. These paired birds will mate every year between January and May. Before they have their young, they excavate a nest in a dead or partially dead tree about 8–15 m up from the ground. Usually two to five eggs are laid and incubated for 3 to 5 weeks. Both parents sit on the eggs and are involved in taking care of the chicks, with the male taking sole responsibility at night. They feed the chicks for months. About five weeks after the young are born, they learn to fly. Even after the young are able to fly, the parents will continue feeding them for another two months. The family will eventually split up in late fall or early winter.

Why Erik?
Erik is basically a social shadow. He knows no one and nobody knows him, so no one would really notice if he disappeared all of a sudden. (and that's all I can come up with right now sweatdrop )

Pretty solid.

A couple things to ponder on.

Why does Moreau want him? Sounds like he's got a normal family, that would make him hard (expensive) to disappear.

You can argue that this character is similar to Colche. With the introvert to extrovert transformation.

Why is does every neat freak on the island say the have OCD?

Felt allergy? I sympathise, I can't stand wool.

Very good character.
He's quite thought out and realistic I think. Nothing overly traumatizing or dramatic about him. I also see Christopher taking him under his wing like a little brother. Also seems like Branwan and him might end up together as they have a lot in common.

Anyway, you get my thumbs up. Good luck on the quest! biggrin

Thanks biggrin

I also see Christopher taking him under his wing like a little brother.

Now that would be really good for Erik since he's never really had a male role model to look up to because his father usually spent his time with Erik's brothers.

Hmmm...interesting idea. Their kid(s) would probably look something like this:
