Ok my friend and I were talking on AIM, and I said that Raoul and Christine were meant to be together. This was the conversation:

Me: I have come to a point in my life where I realize that Raoul and Christine were meant to be together...
Her: What?! Have you lost your mind!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Me: ...I think I found my mind
Her: Wait, you think they should be together or somebody else does?
Me: me

Me: um...because EC would never work

Me: Well, Eirk is too controlling AND Christine tried to Kill herself at the thought of marrying him!
Her: You read the book?
Me: Plus Raoul gave up his money, power, and fame just for Christine
Her: She was terrified!!
Me: yes
Her: But she let him kiss her!!! And she loved him!!
Me: no she didn't
Her: And she didn't try to do it again!!
Me: "If I didn't love you, i wouldn't give you my lips" um...that was said to RAOUL(sorry If that qoute is wrong, I haven't really been doing POTO things[reading, watching, BLAH] for a while)
Her: She cried when he let her go!!!! They both cried!!!!!
Me: um...tears of JOY, for Christine anyway
Her: No I will not talk to you until you come back to your senses
Me: Ok as much as I wish Erik and Christine could be together(Because Erik needs SOMEONE) I just have to realize it would never happen. Even if it did Christine would still love Raoul and Erik would be too controlling
Her: Maybe...No You're crazy

Me: plus that would be really weird if you were talkin bout the movie/play cuz she looked at him like a father-that would be like daddy issues without the daddy!

Me: Well, she did that to save Raoul
Her: No way She could have chosed to stay with him, but instead she kissed him and wanted to stay with him

Yeah I know...and now she is back with a debate about how "Christine loved Eriik," "Christine could have chosen to leave," and that "Raoul is a dork with a moustache who Christine lied to."

Me: How could she grow to hate Raoul besides the "he beat me" line
her: In the masquerade scene he totally abandoned her And Raoul knew that Erik killed people
Me: No I mean in Fanfiction everyone uses the excuse Christine can hate Raoul because he scretly beat her
Her: And he promised Christine he wold protect her and then he just runs off!!!! Then later in the lair he starts gloating about how hard it was to free Her!!!!!!
Me: yeah but he was gettin his sword/gun thingy

Me: Yeah he almost died
Her: And then Christine just stands there and screams at Erik for trying to kill him and won't set a foot into teh water And then she comes out in the water to kiss Erik!!! But, she wouldn't come out to save Raoul And then she comes back and cries
Me: she went in the water to Kiss Erik so he would let Raoul go
Her: But, she couldn't come down to get Raoul?
Me: She loved Raoul so much she was willing to give away her freedom for him
Her: She kissed Erik to show him he wasn't alone
Me: that was just how ALW put it. He changed Christine into a whiney airhead. Leroux had Christine as a strong willed women she tried to save Raoul
Her: If she hated him so much, then tell me why she kept coming back on her free will? He wasn't threatening her then Or when she told Raoul she couldn't leave then because she had to sing for Erik one last time?
Me: That doesnt mean she loved him He was her angel of music

Me: because if she was all like "OMG I HATE YOU NOW U R SO UGLY" he wouldnt have let he up He kissed her on the forehead
Her: Yeah But still
Me: She didnt kiss him
Her: Whatever She loved him
Me: And that is because he would have destroyed the opera house if she didnt SHE DIDNT LOVE HIM

Me: if she did the whole 2 chapters on the roof would be complete lies?

No, you did not read that wrong. That was her debate-That raoul was a dork and that Christine had any choice in the matter of staying or being freed. I don't know what book she was reading, maybe it was Susan Kay(even though I love that book, I could see more of a debate like that over that book), But DEFNATLY not Leroux

After I saw the movie, two of my friends and I had a debate all the way back home about it. XD Was fun. One of us liked Erik, one liked Raoul, and the other was in the middle. Go figure, eh?

Debate skills are great to have. 3nodding You expressed you opinion and defended it well.

I am not a Raoul fan. At all. But I must say, that in going by the Leroux novel, Christine was completely set up to go with Raoul. They had been friends as children and she was actually in love with him. She just respected, then feared, then pitied Erik. No sexual desires involved. She may have resolved her issues with him in the end, but she didn't love him as she loved Raoul.

That said, I take no exception to E/C pairings (in fact I kind of like the idea), but in the actual context of the story, it could never have happened.

So basically...I'm an Erik fan through and through (though I'm not a fanGIRL as I used to be. I reserve that spot for Winslow now) but common sense points to the fact that they could never end up as a couple with both of them satisfied.

It works out better as it does end. Erik gets what he wants...he learns to understand Christine's side, and he lets her go. He's been satisfied by what he got. Christine and Raoul end up together, which is what they want. There would have been a lot more tension and drama and bad blood between the characters had Erik and Christine ended up together.

Wow, backwards bashing much ApI?

Everyone here in this guild is entitled to their opinion. Granted there are debates (that I probably start) about Christine's choice and all the technicalities of such, but you can't chide someone for liking a non-canon pairing.

Every fandom of every genre has the people who will forever like the impossible pairing more than the one that actually happens. Now when they give the dumb reasons for said pairing, yes it's okay to try and "set them straight", but don't tell them that the other pairing is right and better and "to just deal". That's how you start fights.

I really don't see what's wrong with ApI's comment. Her signature says she likes Raoul better than Erik... not that Erik is better than Raoul, not that she doesn't like Erik at all, nothing like that... and yet she still gets 36 messages from people trying to 'defend' Erik.

Just from her liking someone else better than him. Am I the only one who finds something a little sad about that?

And if they're anything like the ones I got when I had my 'Raoul Phan Club' icon, they're predominantly rude and illiterate, and full of rants about how Raoul sucks and how much better Erik is.

Furthermore, I didn't see anything about how Phantom supporters in general are losers, just a comment that the ones who pmed her were.
