Foenix looked down at the letter in her hand. "Looks like this is the place. Handa?" She looked back over her shoulder, and sighed. Nehanda was currently holding Oleo up, hands firmly on his waist, so that he could pick several bright red berries from an over-hanging branch. "Handa, would you get over here? And don't let him eat those. I don't recognize them, and he'll spoil his appetite."
Nehanda obligingly lowered the little boy to the ground, stopping mid-way to whisper in his ear, "She didn't used to be this strict. You must be a real brat to make her worry so much."
Oleo, knowing by now that Nehanda was always joking when she had that particular grin on her face, giggled. "Silly Fweenix." As soon as his feet touched the dirt, he reached up to grab her hand. "Goin' ta see Bwanche. Like Bwanche."
Nehanda nodded. "This'll be fun. And Blanche is a child now, too, so we'll all be able to play some games."
Once the two straggling members of her little group had rejoined her, Foenix knocked on Emi's door.

It had been a few days since Kala had left, and life had been recently quite quiet. The door of number one was left at a slight crack, Toby (asleep) being the only one there to greet Foenix and the two Aerandir to number one. Whether it was a very good greeting or not was another matter, but the old dog's ears flicked as a breeze ruffled his thick shaggy fur. Looking as if he was about to catch a fly any moment, the old dogs furry tail thumped up against the wooden furniture in his current state of dozing.
"Coming!" Came a voice from outside. It couldn't have been Blanche, for it was an older face and voice that met the crew at the door. Her dark ears twitched lightly as the door swung the last of the way open, Emiko Pallone standing in the doorway. Long tail swished behind her, gazing up towards Foenix. Her eyebrows would have furrowed if she hadn't of noticed Nehanda behind her.
Horse and swan, right? Slowly, the guardian broke into a smile. Foenix, this must be Foenix and Nehanda.
From behind the door, a rather unsteady child skipped the last of the way. Her white paws skidded over the last of the way, long hair dangling down in her eyes now her hair band wasn't completely in place. Stepping forwards, a pair of pitch white hands tugged on her mothers arm.
It appeared the little girl had retained that shy streak, instinctively hiding behind her Mother as she peered out from around one furry elbow. Small ears twitched, her long fluffy tail dragging behind her as one milky white canine found its way to nibble on the edge of her lip.
"Foenix, right?" Emi questioned sheepishly, curling her darker fingers back around Blanche's smaller hand. She hadn't been expecting anyone, so naturally the kitchen tabletop was still littered with the womans remnants of trying to teach Blanche how to eat. Foenix wouldn't mind, would she? Stepping one step back with her paws, Emi peered around the edge of the taller woman. Wow, Foenix hadn't been kidding when she said Nehanda had grown.

Foenix smiled easily and gave an amused little wave rather then extending a hand to shake. "That's right. I'm really sorry to drop be unannounced like this, but we needed to pick up a few things from Oleo's house for him, and I thought it would be a nice opportunity to actually meet you."
The auburn-tressed woman reached back and placed a hand on Nehanda's shoulder. "This is Nehanda."
Nehanda smiled at Emi. "Hi there. It's nice to finally meet you both. Foenix always read your letters outloud when I was a kid." Tilting her head, she peered around teasingly at Blanche. "Blanche, I'm Nehanda. We haven't met yet, but I'm an Aerandir, just like you. And I brought a friend of yours to play."
Hooking an arm around Oleo's neck, she pulled the little boy forward. "Do you remember Oleo? I guess you might not recognize each other . . ."
Oleo smiled widely as he nodded. "I 'member. Hi, Blanche! Like your wibbons. Dey're neato."
Foenix shrugged. "Oleo's staying with us for a bit. I didn't mean to descend upon you with a horde. I hope it's not too much of an inconvenience."

Emi's cheeks darkened for that brief moment, tracing her hand back to her side. Sometimes, the furry wished she wasn't so formal: but it was an Emi trait that didn't look like it was to slip any time soon. Without warning, the woman took a step behind Blanche, pushing the smaller child forwards. "No no, it's fine." Barely anyone had been into number one before, so this 'horde' was certainly about to brake down any barriers the house had against visitors.
Blanche's golden eyes widened ten fold as her mother pushed her forewords, looking more like a deer stuck in the headlights for a second. Her ears inclined right back to her head, the earring tags chinking as they met with one another. Yet, as Nehanda introduced herself, the new Aerandir child seemed to relax a little. Then, wait? A flash of a moment in time, a darting around a room session flicked over her head. Her tail flicked out behind her like a barge pole, keeping her balance.
Was that Oleo? The little girl almost smiled, her tooth letting go of her bottom lip as the shy Blanche began to un-earth from her shell. She knew Oleo, they'd played around when she was a gryphon. Opening her mouth, she did her best to repeat the one word Nehanda had said only a moment ago.
"Nee!" Blanche repeated, her eyes widening again. She couldn't click or croon. White paws shifted on the floor beneath her, ears twitching as the strange sensation of her vocal cords alighting set in. She could talk, she could talk like that strange language Emi used to mumble to her.
Emi almost bubbled over, Blanche was trying to talk. Smiling proudly, Emi flicked her own ears for a second. Blanche was talking! "Nice to meet you too Nehanda. I was just making a drink if you'd like one?" The furry guardian suggested, tail coming out to push the door right up against its hinges.

"That would be really fabulous." Foenix took a step inside, leaving enough room between herself and Blanche that the little girl would -hopefully- not feel too nervous and overwhelmed by the strange woman's presense. Foenix's fingers itched to run themselves through Blanche's soft white hair, but she restrained herself.
She looked around the room. "You have a lovely house."
Nehanda looked up from Oleo and Blanche. "A drink would be really nice, Emi. Thanks." She then returned her attention to Blanche and nodded encouragingly. She could certainly remember how difficult it had been to learn how to speak! "That's right, Blanche. Your ribbons really are very neat!" She elongated the word, emphasizing the consonants and vowels. "And I like your earrings. Did a friend give you your feather?" Her eyes sought out and realized that the ribbons she had just complimented were the very same ones she had dropped off for Blanche's transformation. How . . . cool.
Oleo danced a bit in place, eager to explore and play. Blanche was a little taller then he was, and he sort of wanted to play with that fluffy tail of hers . . . but he sensed that it might make the girl nervous right now. "Fweenix an Handa is teetsin' me to talk, too. It's kinda hard, but ya learn fast! I like talkin'. You like to play games?"
Nehanda bit her lip to keep from laughing. Oleo certainly did like to talk!
Foenix gave a happy sigh. "It's really so amazing," she murmured to Emi. She knew that the girl would understand exactly what she was talking about. "I haven't been witness to much magic in my life, but Nehanda makes me believe in anything."

"Oh, thank you," Emi suddenly felt like a proud house owner and Aerandir guardian. Padding her way back from the white Aerandir child, Emi motioned towards the chairs with their patchwork throws, pausing just before the kitchen opening. Flicking her tail back around one ankle, Emi watched the three Aerandir from the corner of her eye.
"We've got tea, coffee and some orange juice if I remember rightly," The woman ruled off on her fingers. It wasn't until Foenix mentioned magic that the woman seemed to snap back off her heels. Magic, oh good gosh was Emi going to get a lesson in magic over her time in Ar 'Idil.
The little girl slowly seemed to relax, her ears flicking back from her pitch white hair. She seemed to slip into thought for a moment, opening her mouth again for a second time. "Ee..." A completely different sound, but not quite the effect Blanche had been hoping for. Soft white furry fingers dragged up to touch the metal earrings upon one ear, a smile slowly filtering across her features. The feather? That one had been Kala's, and Kala had left a day or so ago...
Not one to stay down, Blanche flicked her tail behind her. Oleo was white, just as her, and that was nifty enough for her to want to talk just like they did. Releasing the metal from her fingertips, the little girl paused. If they we're gryphons, she would have just bowled them into a game, now she was a child...
Well, she felt like she had to be human-ly correct. Leaning forwards, her small fingers reached out for Nehanda's hand. Golden eyes sparkled as the smaller child did her best to tug the elder further inside, into the Pallone's rather spacious living room.
"I don't think, in my heart of hearts, that I even believed in magic until I came here." Emi commented, taking a moment to lean up against the wooden barrier between the living room and her un-used kitchen. "But I'm sure I've only seen the beginning." It really was amazing, how only nine months ago she was the proud carer of a feather and a piece of fur: that had now solidified into a newborn child. A newborn child that was dashed with a bit of icicle magic no less.

"Tea would be just fine for all of us." Foenix ran a finger over the throws. They were soft, and the colors wre quite eye-catching. Emi's next words made her laugh softly. "Oh, gads, you have no idea. And Blanche is a spell-weaver, right? At least Nehanda is an Herbalist. No magic there, aside from her instinctive knowledge of plants and herbs and their uses. That reminds me," she looked back over her shoulder to watch the three. "Doesn't Blanche get hot? She's based upon creatures which live at arctic temperatures, right? I was wondering how you managed to deal with something like that around here." she laughed again. "I also think of questions I should have asked after I send a letter off to you."
Nehanda let Blanche pull her into the living room, and settled down on the rug. She was very curious, but didn't want to overwhelm Blanche when the little girl wasn't yet able to talk clearly. Instead, she continued in Oleo's last topic. "Oleo told me that you like to play games. Do you know how to play hide-and-seek? He and I have been playing that game a lot at my house." It seemed like a good one that didn't require too much speach.
Oleo nodded, shaggy bangs falling over his eyes. "We's done that a bunch. Or dere are odder games . . ." He trailed off, and scrunched his little face up as he tried to think of some. "We could go cwimb twees, or just pway outside. Fweenix is always sendin' me outside to pway." he looked over his shoulder at the woman. "Or we can stay inside if you wike."

Disappearing behind the kitchen opening, Emi's tail flicked behind the gap. Soon enough, the sound of clinkering and a kettle boiling on the opposite side could be heard through the gap. Thank gaia for mini-battery operated kettles and microwaves, it was all Emi really used to cook on. Then again, that small detail was all about to start changing.
It took a moment or two for the woman to reply, but Emi peeked around the side of the kitchen door a moment later - the sound of the kettle slowly boiling in the background. The one disadvantage of battery organized appliances: they took a while to work. Emi smiled to herself, wiping a china cup on a striped tea towel as she returned. "Believe it or not, we used to go to the fridge every single night. How we're going to do that now I don't know." The furry almost exasperated, they had to work out a way so Blanche could get back to something cold. They'd figure it out, somehow.
The guardian chuckled nevertheless, finishing drying the last cup with the now rather soggy tea towel. "I'm sure I'll end up seeing a lot more magic within the next few weeks, so , if you don't mind me asking, what did you teach Nehanda when she was Blanche's age?"
Blanche, in truth, glanced from one Aerandir to the other. Shifting her legs beneath her, the lithe white child sat down on the floor beside Nehanda. One paw crossed over the other, Blanche's golden eyes just watching the other two. Hide and seek? Well, she knew how to play that game.
Bringing her arm up to settle her orange hair band back against those piles of white hair, she scrunched her small nose up. Opening her mouth, Blanche did her best to repeat the sound. She felt so silly in truth, Oleo could talk and Nehanda was as articulate as Emi. "Ide...eek," She repeated, trying to get her motion across. Her voice was far softer than that of the other two Aerandir, and as she spoke her white ears flickered against her hairline. Golden eyes poised in concentration, she repeated herself.
"Ide," She started off, suddenly glancing up towards Oleo. Pressing her thumb to her chest, the white gryphon did her best to convey what she really wanted to play. Hopefully he would understand?

Foenix smiled. Blanche used to sleep in a fridge? "That sounds like a lot of work." Worth it, of course. Any amount of work was worth it to keep her own girl happy, and Foenix was sure Emi would agree.
She sat in one of the chairs, and found it quite comfortable. "Well, I've had a lot of experience with humanoid children, even if Nehanda was pretty different from most of them. Speech lessons were some of the most important, and I started teaching her the alphabet, and how to write. A lot of this is the stuff most children should learn. I'd read to Nehanda every night from the beginning, even when she was in the jars. So she already liked stories. That was good incentive for her to learn how to read.
"And I don't know what Blanche will be like, but we did tend to butt heads over the lessons. Nehanda had her gardens by then, and all she wanted was to be outside, digging in the dirt." Foenix laughed. "Regular baths and sanitation were also big lessons.
Out in the living room, Nehanda leaned back on her heels. She was pretty sure she understood what Blanche wanted, but wanted to see if Oleo could figure it out. He was a pretty smart little boy.
Oleo forwned a bit as he pondered Blanche's near-words. "You wanna play hide'n seek? Do you wanna hide first? I could be the finder person, an you could show Handa where ta hide. She's kinda big."
"Hey, now," Nehanda muttered with a small grin.

He understood! The joy on the little Aerandir's face was immediate, her long hefty tail swishing from one side to the other behind her. The little girl wriggled to her feet, swaying for a moment: clearly, she was getting used to a new body full stop. Flattening her tail out to catch her balance, Blanche beamed up towards the slightly older male child, her chin bowing in what could have been considered a nod.
Blanche glanced around; all the places she would have hid as a child now were right out of order. Golden eyes met with Emi's open door...Emi didn't exactly have very many clothes for that small wardrobe she had. Maybe Nehanda could fit in there? Glancing back at Nehanda, Blanche furrowed her brows.
No, she'd hurt her wings if she went in there. Where else...
In the middle of her trail of thought, Blanche decided that the wardrobe would be the best place to start. If Nehanda couldn't fit then they'd find somewhere else in time, right?
"I'm a useless cook," Emi admitted, zipping back towards the boiling kettle as the distinct high peep of steam rushing out from the plastic filled her large ears. Two tea bags in the teapot later, Emi poured the hot water into the large appliance. Her tail flicked from one side to the other, talking to Foenix from the other side of the kitchen.
"It gave me a chance to toast a few slices of bread, that and she just seemed so much more relaxed in there," Emi chuckled to herself, adding as an afterthought. "Though, we had to add a sign warning everyone else about the fur,"
Sliding the teapot onto a tray with five cups (just incase) and a bowel of biscuits, Emi clasped either side of the tray. Moving past Foenix, she slid it down onto their makeshift kitchen table (which looked almost brand new and not used). Letting her large tail flick behind her, the twenty three year old smiled over towards Foenix.
"I'm afraid I haven't looked after any children at all, I was going to start teaching her how to talk after we'd got a small food matter sorted," Her ears almost drooped at this. It had been a failed couple of tries to even get Blanche to pick up a spoon, but they'd managed to get her to pick a bread stick up with her fingers last night. Step by step, little by little.

Foenix nodded in sympathy. "I can't imagine what it's like. Their entire world view changes within seconds. But take everything slowly and as it comes. I think you'll find that Blanche adapts very quickly after the first day or so to get used to her new body. I've certainly found that the other Aerandir children have done so. If you'd like, I can send over some of the educational books I used for Nehanda. 'See Spot run,' and all that, and some excellent texts for the alphabet and simple maths."
She took a biscuit and nibbled it as she listened to Oleo's giggles with half an ear.
"Gweat! You guys go hide. I's gonna count ta fibty." Putting his fingers in his ears, the little boy shut his eyes tightly and began to count loudly. "One, two, tree, six, seben, ten, four . . ."
Nehand aleaned close to Blanche and whispered, "He's not very good at counting yet, so I don't actaully know how much time we have." Obligingly, she followed Blanche and allowed the girl to usher her into the closet. "Ooo, dear." She ducked back out quickly and fluttered her wings. "I'm afraid I'm a little too large for that. Do you have any other ideas? Maybe I could fit underneath Emi's bed? Foenix's bed has enough room underneath it that I can just barely fit under there . . ."
As the two girls scampered off, Foenix watched them go, then studied Oleo. His loud counting was very out of order, and very amusing. "See? I think Blanche will be fine."

So the wardrobe was no good? Just as she had thought. Ducking down on her paws, Blanche glanced underneath the bed. True to Emi form, it was clear underneath, nothing at all was there. With one last glance over towards Oleo, Blanche's golden eyes widened. That was it! Suddenly clasping Nehanda's hand, Blanche did her best to run out of the room and out through the front door.
Just outside the front door and around the corner of the house sat the wooden storage hut type thing. It was about as tall as Nehanda, and since Emi had removed the wood recently: it was vacant. What had been a place to store wood had now become a perfect hiding place for both horse and white fox Aerandir.
Blanche, not one hundred percent steady with running, cropped her tail out as she caught her balance. One hand still clasping onto Nehanda's hand, Blanche tugged and pulled at the door. Her white furry ear flicked for a moment as the door opened.
It was perfect for both of them to fit inside and comfortably close the door now the wood had been removed.
"That would be great if you could," Emi commented, metallic blue eyes following the two of them as they dashed outside. She inwardly winced a few times as Blanche's paws seemed to skip their own tune, but pouring herself a cup of tea consoled all of those thoughts.
One large ear twitched against her head, sipping from the edge of her china cup before replying to the woman. "How did Nehanda's journey go in the end?" Emi questioned, turning her attention back to the conversation in hand.

What a great idea! And there was plenty of space in the storage shed. Scooping Blanche up onto her hip, Nehanda pulled the door shut behind them. "Is it okay if I hold you up like this?" she whispered to the pristine white child. "That way I don't have to worry about hitting you with one of my wings."
"I'll send the books over tomorrow," Foenix promised. "As for Nehanda's journey . . ." The woman held up her hands and gave a very French shrug. "Acia and Osero took Nehanda and another of the kids, Pueblo, off with them in a boat one morning. Later that night, and I mean well after midnight, Nehanda comes flying back home, looking like she does now. And they're apparently sworn to secrecy about the entire thing. I have no idea where they went, what they did, what they were told. I don't even know if it was safe or dangerous!"
Her voice had risen over the course of this short diatribe, and she blushed as soon as she realized it. "Sorry. But it's really very frustrating, not being able to know something so important."
"Tirdy-six, tirdy-one, Fibty!" Evidently deciding that he had counted long enough, Oelo popped his eyes open and clambered to his feet. "I's comin' ta get you!" He looked around eagerly, then began to search the room. They weren't under the table . . . Running into the kitchen, he checked under the table there and tried to open a cabinet.

A great idea and one not thought of straight away either. The little girl barely made a sound as she was hoisted up against one hip, her own far smaller wings folding right back to her back. Large golden eyes battered up and down, getting used to the little light the storage compartment had. It wasn't pitch black, but it was dark enough for the girl's eyes to adjust to the change.
Her ears flicked against her head, catching the last of Oleo's counting on the edge of a wavelength. Clasping her hands together over Nehanda's arm, Blanche turned her attention back to the far taller girl. Would she really be that tall in the end? Flicking the tip of one white ear, the little girl shook her head to both questions.
She didn't mind, it was actually rather comfortable to be off ones feet for a little while. It almost felt like it had done being picked up as a gryphon: almost.
All they needed to do now was wait. The soft sound of their breathing ran through the ice spell weavers brain, trying to keep all shuffling, movement and even blinking to a minimum as not to be found.
"Thank you," Emi flashed the woman a smile, her ears twitching as Foenix poured out her worries over the trip. If she wanted to be honest, if it had of been Blanche, Emi would be up in hair curlers by now. The edges of her dark chocolate brown fingers curled around the cup, does this mean that Blanche and everyone else would go through the same experience eventually?
"I can understand, but I'm sure Osero and Acia wouldn't take the Aerandir anywhere that was dangerous. Sometimes, I suppose, even Aerandir need to do things by themselves," Emi consolidated, plucking up her first biscuit. Instead of eating it straight off, she broke it up into two, setting it back down beside her cup of tea before she continued.
"Plus, I'm sure Nehanda wants to tell you just as much as you want to know," The furry guardian offered, knowing it wasn't quite a big a pay cheque as Foenix might have needed. Letting her long tail swish behind her, Emi's large ears flicked briefly back to her head as the creek of another empty kitchen cupboard was open. He wouldn't find anything there but dust.

Nehanda pulled one wing back and out of the way so that she could lean against her hip. Just as when she had been a child, her heart beat was quickened and there was the tight, funny feeling of excitement in her chest. "Hide-n-seek has always been one of my favorite games," she whispered to Blanche.Of course, I'd usually climb a tree to hide. But the last time I tried to climb a tree as a teen, I fell out! I almost landed on top of Oleo and Air Song. It took me a while to get used to this bigger body, just like it took a while for me to get used to being a kid."
Foenix chuckled over Oleo as he scrambled under her legs to check the kitchen table once more. "Oleo, that's not very polite."
The little boy scrambled back up. "Sorry," he mumbled, his attention already elsewhere. "Gotta find Bwanche and Handa. Dey're not in de kitsen, and dey're not in da odder room."
"You might try outside," the woman suggested. "Try looking for places where Nehanda could fit."
With a big grin, Oleo spun on his heels and ran for the front door. A moment later, it slammed open and closed, and his voice could be heard as he yelled, "I's gonna find you guys!"
Foenix smiled over at Emi and shrugged. "I figure a little hint doesn't hurt." That said, she returned to the earlier topic of conversation. "Oh, I know that. Acia is a wonderful girl, even if she's so very shy. I'd trust her to take Nehanda almost alywhere. And children do have to grow up and go their own ways. But . . . it's one thing to know it in my head. My heart, on the other hand . . . I'm something of a worry-wort, as the kids are constantly reminding me."
