I just wanted to share my opinions on the difference between Erik and Christine's relationship and Raoul and Christine's relationship. Let's use the metaphor of them all being highschool students (I'm open to flaming for this) Raoul and Christine would be boyfriend-girlfriend and everyone would know it. They would be walking around chatting and the like. Erik would be an intimidating loner. He and Christine would keep looking at each other while passing each other, though they would hardly ever say anything. I'm still not sure how this would tie into the singing lesson things, but it's the first thing that came to mind.
Let's start a discussion now: What are your opinions?

You've just named the romantic plot of every teen soap opera on the air. But I think it has something to it. Raoul's more like the handsome, rich popular kid that everyone likes, and Christine is the poor but good hearted girl that Raoul falls in love with much to the shock of everyone else. And then it progresses to what you have. And...Erik is not only a loner, but a kind of wierd, stalker-esque type.

My personal opinion in there really is no relationship between Erik and Christine. Their entire relation is based on lies, which when revealed, crumble and leave nothing.
Raoul and Christine of course share the stereotypical true love relationship. A happily ever after in the making.
Buuut, that's just me.

Christine liked Erik for what he taught her. At first, he was the "Angel of Music" and she saw him as the last thing she had left of her father. But since that wasn't true, she was still drawn to his music, but not "in love". She was in love with Raoul. Honestly, I thought she was torn between them, only for different reasons. She had no sexual feelings toward Erik whatsoever, even though he had them toward her. So it was more a "His music is intriguing, I owe him for what he taught me, and yet I am repulsed by him" type of thing. In the end, through a bit of force (understatement, eh?) she ended up feeling for him, but still not in the way he felt for her. Still, this was enough for him, and they both seemed to see each other's side of this love triangle. She treated him as a human, he let her go to who she loved, and it was more or less a happy ending.
But I don't think that Christine was attracted to Erik as he was to her. In fact, that is rather obvious.
All of this taken from my main source, the Leroux novel.

I don't know. Doesn't really matter, I guess, seeing as to that it was (more or less) relevant. Just out there. I just didn't get why you added that.

(I am so about to show myself as the nerd I am) My first thought on reading your description was "Oh! Like Rory in Gilmore Girls! (With Dean and Jess)"

|If you need me|
She was passionate about the teacher, passionate aboute the lessons, but her passion was not for the teacher himself. In the end, it's all feelings of pity. Christine never truly loved Erik and she never would.
To get the feeling of an older guy into the high school metaphor Erik'd probably have been the music teacher. (Or, if you wanted to be specific, chorus teacher.) Let's face it, one of the things about Erik is he is shitloads older than Christine- though many a phangirl might phantisize otherwise.

darkmariel I agree i with all o dat....but Ithink she also loved him for the mystyrey..... Mystery. Just minorly correcting that. It's actually a good debate on whether or not Christine actually loved Erik at all. But there was no mystery to behold with him. He pretended to be an angel and then in jealousy showed her that he was actually mortal. The only thing left was the mask and she took that off of him not soon after, revealing his face. So in all actually, everything of him was laid at her feet.

Christine's 'relationship' with Erik was nothing but lies and betrayal. She loved her angel until she realized all of it was a fake. Raoul is her childhood friend and of course they would fall in love because Raoul is patient with her and very caring... and yaddie-da.
Also Erik's a pretty messed up guy, he's been through hell. He has a short-temper, very controlling, and wants to get his way (for once). So that's another thing that Christine hates him for. 'It's in your soul... that the true distortion lies...' Remember that?
Good lord. I feel like such a loser. xD I love Erik, but Raoul and Christine are supossed to be together and I find myself making that point constantly. xp
