Please tell me someone out there has read her works. I love the way she writes, the characters seem so human. I have to admit however that the only book I've 100% read and completed was Handmaid's Tale which was brilliantly weaved into words. Currently reading her book Edible Woman and so far it's interesting though I haven't even reached 100 pages yet.
I've heard you either love her or you hate her? Your opinion.

I've only read--I think it was called A Handmaid's Tale? But that was such a good book that I'm completely willing to pick up something else by her.

oh thank you for posting. I was scared this post was going to go into the black abyss. I wouldn't know what to recommend to you because I haven't finished reading anything else. But the Edible Woman is good up to now but Inkheart by Cornelia Funke is distacting me plenty.

The only one I've read by her was the Handmaid's Tale...it was very good, and I'd be willing to pick up another..but the suspense nearly drove me mad...

I've read The Blind Assassin, Surfacing, Alias Grace, and The Handmaid's Tale and have Oryx and Crake and Bluebeard's Egg bought but unread. She's one of my favourite authors, but her books usually take me a while to get reading properly. I'm looking at The Handmaid's Tale as part of my dissertation this year on dystopian literature. 3nodding

I've heard Alias Grace is supposed to be a very good novel, and I might pick that up once I finish with my current read.

rockywitch I wish I had read all of these. The Handmaid's Tale is amazing, it's a really good novel to demonstrate dystopian society's. I worked that into my thesis for my writer's craft class. I know 3nodding . I'm very proud too that I've actually gotten started properly on my dissertation now. Starting off with the characters (comparing Offred with the females in Brave New World and Nineteen Eighty-Four to start with) then I'll move on to another section. I still think I liked The Blind Assassin more in terms of general interest of story. It has a very interesting story within a story, within another story that I found quite captivating at times. I would recommend it from what I've read so far. Also, if you liked the dystopic theme of The Handmaid's Tale you should read Oryx and Crake, which is her other dystopian work, though as I said, I haven't gotten to it yet. smile

I'm tackling the Edible Woman right now but I haven't gotten deep enough into it. I'm also going to eventually start tackling Lady Oracle though I really haven't had anyone say anything about it. I'm wondering if you could offer an opinion?

I just finished reading Alias Grace, and I think it was a good/ok book. Not quite as striking as the Handmaid's Tale was for me, but that could be because HT was my first Atwood's novel, and I really liked it.
Is it a common thing in her books for some type of 'Lady and the Tiger' factor to exist?

I like her fiction but her poetry just strikes me as her best work. It's just delicious!
I've only read The Blind Assassin, The Handmaid's Tale, and Oryx and Crake.
