27 True Runes
In the beginning, there was "darkness."
Then, the "darkness" shed a "tear."
From that "tear," the brothers Sword and Shield were born.
Shield claimed it could defend against any attack.
Sword claimed it could slice through anything.
The brothers began a legendary battle.
At the end, both Sword and Shield shattered.
Sword became the sky, Shield became the earth, and the sparks from the battle became the stars.
As for the jewels, they fell to the ground and became the True Runes--The runes that all other runes were born from.

On with the Introduction:
Welcome to Suikoden: The Yorün Holy War this roleplay is very, and I repeat, very loosely based on the game series known as Suikoden. So loosely based, in fact, that I, myself cannot even consider it Suikoden besides that it is set in an unmentioned area in the game. But welcome anyway!

Almost no knowledge of Suikoden is needed in order to participate in this roleplay. Think of it as a structured fantasy roleplay with many possible outcomes.

With that said, on with the story!

The Backstory:
Forty years before the creation of the Toran Republic, Harmonia had first reached out to settle an untouched land to the south of The Grasslands. This land, which they called Yorün, was a land of diverse geography. They had a mountainous border to the North, barring it from The Grasslands, deep forests, vast plains, and beautiful peninsulas. The Harmonian Ships landed on its shores, and, impressed by its beauty, gave it its name, and promptly began settling. Bishop Loto Rainard, a powerful Harmonian figure, was given leadership of the country, and ruled it with a powerful hand.

But the path to creating Yorün was littered with strife. The Elves, the former populace, were forced from their homes, and congregated together deep in the Eindall Woods. There they hid in their capital, Rien L'Arc, away from the human invaders. The Kobolds, who lived peacefully, were forced to change their ways, and were treated as lesser beings. Most were forced to serve the humans to feed themselves.

These tragedies were minute in the eyes of the humans as their small colony grew into a massive theocracy. Bishop Loto took up rule in the capital, Ci'laar, where all the nobility and clergy gathered. The elves held their silent opposition to Harmonia in Rien L'Arc, much too weak to fight them off. Cities sprung up all across the country, bringing a variety of industry and strength to the nation.

Things have been peaceful, but as the nobles have slowly gained power in the clergy, and the commoners became oppressed, tensions were rising between them. Rebellious forces of Yorünians are springing up across the countryside, and it looks like war is looming on the horizon. The Nobles are just as ready to fight for their rights as the rebels are. Who will you side with?

The Rules of Engagement:
- Like all of Gaia, this is a PG-13 area. Please keep all language at that level; you know what that is. If you don't know what PG-13 includes, this is not the place for you.
- No bumping or spamming. Bumping or spamming in this thread is not needed. You are welcome to chat (OOC smile but please, please don't bump! Just don't do it.
- Be respectful of other players. Opinions are a great thing, but they should not always be expressed. There is a time and a place for everything and if you know that what you are posting may hurt another person, then just don't do it.
- Follow all rules posted in the 'GAIA Terms of Service'. If you cannot follow these then you will, and I repeat, will be removed from this thread; pronto.
- Flag all out of character speech. Examples: "OOC:" or ()
- No god-modding. Period.
- You can have more than one character. But let's try to keep the limit to 2?
- And lastly but certainly not leastly, don't be a dumbass. You all know what a dumbass is. Don't be one.

As an added note, if you fall victim to verbal abuse from another user or you feel that you have been disrespected or violated in any way, please tell Brad Meine immediately. It is much better to tell me than it is to fight with the other party and potentially escalate the situation so that you are both blacklisted and your characters deleted. Keep your head on your shoulders.

Town Histories for Yorün (B-I)

Baenar Cress - “The City of the Plains”. Baenar Cress is one of the larger cities of Yorün, and surrounded by massive plains. It’s is the agricultural focal point of the country, and populated by all the industries that come with agriculture. Farmers reside mostly on the outskirts of the city, amidst their fields, while the rest of the populace resides in the city, well protected by its walls. Over time, farmers have been less abundant, as any impending danger puts them on the frontline, and thus they are weary to take on such a potentially dangerous occupation. Also, people of Milit are mainly farmers that congregated away from Baenar Cress, so as to avoid risk during an attack on major cities.

Brin'Jiar - The city of Brin'Jiar is built at the mouth of the Tiimass River. The river itself forks into two tributaries which serves as a natural barrier around Brin'Jiar. The citizens of Brin'Jiar, commonly known as Brinners, are a multi-cultural group or rebels who are dissatisfied with the innerworkings of the church. Noble Forces are stationed in Brin'Jiar to help keep riots and civil unrest under control. Brin'Jiar is best known for its 'Field of Windmills' which lies just north of the city. It is said that this field contains nearly two-hundred windmills.

Ci’Laar - The Human Capital of Yorün, and the largest city. It is home to Bishop Loto Rainard, a powerful bishop of Harmonia. He came to the Yorün and colonized it for Harmonia, and thus became its leader. Many make pilgrimages to see Bishop Loto each year, and thus be cleansed. Recently, though, there has been some unrest within the people, as the theocratical nobles of Ci’Laar seem to be rising in power within the church, leaving the lesser peoples oppressed by the church’s tithing and dictator-like rules. The tensions are continuing to rise between the church and the commoners, and disputes are on the horizon. With the pressure from Harmonia’s church, some commoners are certain to wish to break away from Harmonia and destroy the church with it. Ci’Laar is the base for both.

Icci - The Home of the Kinnon Pirates. They thrive on hijacking ships heading into port Lagrenne. The only real problem with this is that they aren’t the best pirates. They are actually fairly docile, and only attack ships at their leisure. They put on a fasade of being dangerous and tough, but they are actually friendly pirates who prefer to drink and be merry over being ruthless and fierce.

Ijiin - Known as the 'Sin City' of the Yorün region; littered with pubs and brothels. An ocean city struck by a wave of organized crime, led by the 'Black Seven'. Little is known about the members, but it is rumored that some of the more rich and greedy patrons of Ijiin help fund this gang of hooligans. Of course, none of this can be proven. Entry into Ijiin is strictly prohibited without proper identification.

Impargyl - a town on the northern border of Yorün. It is a marshy town with very little agricultural value. It is, though, home to the famous Arren Clan of Bakers. Thus, this town has been famous for its baked goods since the clan was first born, though it relies wholly on imported supplies for its livelihood. Otherwise, this town is fairly small, and revolves around its baking industry.

Town Histories for Yorün (J-M)

Jhuul - A one-stop ocean-side city. By day, Jhuul is a bustling transport hub flocked with people and filled with commotion; by night, it is nearly deserted. Jhuul is known throughout Yorün as the 'Floating City'. This is because rather than sleeping in buildings, villagers rest in boat-like structures called 'Rickmeres'. Despite the heavy amounts of boat and merchant traffic, the town's population is considerably small. Immigrants from Grassland arrive in Jhuul almost daily via ship. Few people live in Jhuul, but many travelers use it as a rest stop when traveling, especially by ship

Katriarch - Not as much of a town as more of a roadside bed & breakfast. Katriarch consists of only a few cottages, farm land, and the village's main attraction, The Shining Star Inn. Katriarch is known nationwide as being a great place to rest for the weary traveler as well as the crossroads of the northwest Yorün region.

Ki’Taal - The Sister Port of Kou’Tiel. It is on the Western Split of Finn Peninsula, and more fishing oriented than its sister. It has the largest fish industry in the country. The fishermen of Ki’Taal are very proud of their industry, and are usually fairly cold toward outsiders. The close-knit fishermen are known to only accept those who can prove themselves at sea.

Kou’ Tiel - The Sister Port of Ki’Taal. Kou’ Tiel is actually the Magic Capital of Yorün. The Magic Academy there educates youth about runes and there uses, and trains some of the most powerful mages in the world. It has always had a poor relationship with Ci’Laar, seeing as it fails to train them in the ways of Hikusaak, but rather in rune usage and magical theory. It, of course, is a force to be reckoned with on its own, with or without the support of an army. Various Nobles have tried to close down the Academy for fear of a rebellion from the free thinkers that may be trained there. Magical Theory and Hikusaak’s laws have few similarities, which could cause potential disputes with the mages.

Loft - This mountain-side village is a exile town. It was originally an attempt at a mountain fort, but it failed miserably when they discovered that the misty peaks made it very weak against ambushes and thus a failure of a fort. So, the government turned the failed fort into an exile camp of sorts, where most of the outlaws, gypsies, and mentally ill have been sent. This place is quite dangerous to the average traveler, and is usually avoided by all. It is said that there was actually a large armory in the depths of the fort, but since it became an exile camp, no one has dared search for the “Hidden Armory”.

Merjense - The economic center of Yorün. Merjense is known for its large, bustling market district as well as its Bazaar. It is said that if you are looking for anything from flowers, to armor, to runes, to information - it can all be found in Merjense. Word of mouth travels quickly upon the streets of Merjense. It is also rumored that Merjense has a growing shady side; there has even been talk of an underground black market for slave trade.

Milit - A village located on the Yorün-Grassland border. Milit is actually a sub-division of the great city of Baenar Cress. In response to threats made upon Baenar Cress, many peasants and farmers moved outside of the city walls and formed a small village at the base of the mountains. Many of the young men of Milit serve in the Noble military.

Town Histories for Yorün (P-V)

Port Lagrenne - One of the first settled towns in the country. It was first built to ease transport of goods and water from the Lake Lorgneil and its river. It later became one of the most bustling cities on the continent, with its constant flow of goods and the like from neighboring countries, and its control of the waterways. Later on, Dane LeMoore, one of the future famed generals of the country, was born here. Founded by Yarin Lagrenne.

Precidice - The largest Noble city in southern Yorün. Precidice's population consists of about 60% human and 40% kobold. Precidice is revered as Yorün's southern 'Holy City'. While only human are allowed to become members of the clergy, many religious Kobolds serve on the Noble Holy Guard - protecting important members of the faith. The city is built around a central temple, where citizens from miles around can come to pray and pay their respects to their God.

Rekisuu - Home of the Daisuke Ninja Clan. It is hidden deep in the Swallowfoot forest, near the mountains, it is said. There is no way into the village other than through the forest, and the deep sea of trees makes it very difficult to find. The high mountains rise up behind the forest, making them impassable. There are rumors that the Ninja clan has agents outside of the village, though they are highly unfounded and no one knows whether the village exists anymore.

Rien L’Arc - The Last Haven of Elves in Yorün. The Elves were in the country long before humans, though they were fairly sparse. Now, all of the elves have congregated in Eindall Woods. Their city, Rien L’Arc, was the capital before their flight from humans. Thus, they created a spell and wove it about the forest to prevent humans from finding the city. Elves rarely leave the city, but on occasion they will venture out of their own will to find things that they cannot obtain in the city. It is a beautiful city, with towers rising almost higher than the massive trees, and ivory buildings that glow in the light that enters through the trees. By far one of the loveliest cities on Yorün, though few people can see it.

Taepin - A lake-side village with very little industry at all. Rather, it is simply a resort-like village that relies on importing goods to support its comfortable lifestyle. The wealthy of Yorün tend to have summer and permanent homes in Taepin, and nothing else of importance occurs there.

Taikou - A sleepy fishing village along the southeast coast of Yorün territory. The tiny village of Taikou is entirely suspended above water; consisting only of a few houses built on stilts. Villagers live a carefree and quiet life in Taikou; isolated by the Swallowfoot Forest. It is rumored that a sword-fighting legend is living out the rest of his days here.

Vjaat - A medium-sized mining town and quarry that provides for most of the ore shipped to Ci'Laar. Vjaat acts as a checkpoint for the Risenfall Mountain trail that serves as a trade route and feeds into the Scarlet Moon Empire. Recently a monster has been terrorizing miners as well as traders traveling along the trail. Vjaat itself is almost built entirely into the side of the mountain - with only a small percentage of the town protruding outside.
