This is not an RP thread. Instead, it is a place to record, well, moments of inspiration. During your real life book reading adventures -- which I encourage you all to have -- you are sure to come across excerpts that you think are inspiring. As QS and Lizzie cannot possibly read every book in the world, this might provide them with inspiration to create another Forgotten! (I know QS and Lizzie are all knowing, all seeing and all powerful, but I can still help, dammit!) So, there are rules, as with all things. I believe that the excerpts cannot contain any character names or bits of speech. The three excerpts from the flatsale are a good reference for picking some of your own to post here. Also, I made this thread up, not QS or Liz-Liz, so dont badger them to pick your excerpt. They may beat me about the head and ears just for posting this. eek Anywho, have fun, read books, be educated! If I become aware of any other criteria I will post it! Please post When posting an excerpt, please include: The excerpt in quotation marks The name of the book the excerpt is from The author of the book
This will make it much easier for QS and Liz to reference your quotation if they like it! Thanks!

My head and ears are safe from the wackings and smackings! Oh how lucky my poor, tender head is.
Thanks!

"Spiralling stone arches framed doorways; gargoyles descended from kitchen pipes, mouths open to issue rainwater, but only managing, at best, a suspended spider. Others, froglike chins in hand, contemplated centuries of boredom atop an archway, guarding the room within from nothing."
Ombria in Shadow by Patricia A. McKillip.

"And here, in the sanctum sanctorum, there are three men who count the money, and there are the guards who watch and who bring money and take it away; and there is another person. His charcoal gray suit is immaculate, his hair is dark, he is cleanshaven, and his demeanour are, in every sense, forgettable. None of the other men has even observed that he is there, or if they have noticed him, they have forgotten him on the instant." -- American Gods by Neil Gaiman

"He is somewhere deep beneath the ground: in a tunnel, perhaps, or a sewer. Light comes in flickers, defining the darkness, not dispelling it. He is not alone. There are other people walking beside him, although he cannot see their faces. They are running, now, through the inside of the sewer, splashing through the mud and filth. Droplets of water fall slowly through the air, crystal clear in the darkness. He turns a corner, and the beast is waiting for him." -- Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman
"Now he was trapped inside a ring of them. Trapped inside walls of ice, smoother than the smoothest glass, colder than the coldest winter. He couldn't break out; he pounded on them until his arms were leaden, to no effect. Everywhere he looked -- ice, snow, nothing alive, nothing but white and pale blue and silver. Even the sky was white. And he was so alone -- so terribly alone." -- Magic's Pawn by Mercedes Lackey
"He was clad in dull black armor, like his soldiers, but carried no weapon. He didn't need one; he was a weapon. He was a weapon with no other purpose than the destruction and death he molded into his power. Unlike the knife which could cut to heal or harm, this weapon would never serve any other purpose than pain." Magic's Pawn by Mercedes Lackey.

"He pushed the door open and blocked it with his foot, looked up and down the street. No one. Breathe soldier. Breathe, breathe, breathe... He lowered the gun to his palm, the butt resting heavy in his gloved hand. He began applying imperceptible pressure to the trigger. Breathe, breathe. He stared at the old woman, and forgot completely about squeezing, forgot about aiming, forgot about the money he was making, forgot everything in the universe. He simply held the gun steady as a rock in his supple, relaxed hands and waited for the weapon to fire itself." -The Coffin Dancer by Jeffrey Deaver

The moon had set by now, and the sky to the south was profoundly dark, though the billions of stars lay on it like diamonds on velvet. They were outshone, though, by the Aurora, outshone a hundred times. Never had anyone seen it so brilliant and dramatic; with every twitch and shiver, new miracles of light danced across the sky. And behind the ever-changing gauze of light that other world, that sunlit city, was clear and solid.
"Northern Lights" by Philip Pullman

(( I'll post some German excerpts now together with their translation, done by me biggrin )) Grete Minde by Theodor Fontane "Aber sie schrak vor diesem Augenblick nicht zurück und hatte nichts als das doppelt selige Gefühl ihres befriedigten Hasses und ihrer errungenen Freiheit. Ja, Freiheit ! Sie war dieses Haus nun los. Denn das stand fest in ihrer Seele, dass sie nicht länger bleiben könne. Fort. Gleich." "But she didn't back away from this moment und felt nothing beside the duplicative happy feeling of her satisfied hate and her achieved freedom. Yes, freedom ! She got rid of this house now. The decision had been made in her soul that she couldn't stay any longer. Away. At once." Flut by Wolfgang Hohlbein "Und dann...flackerte etwas in diesen Augen auf. Es ging ganz schnell. Vielleicht nur für den Bruchteil einer Sekunde, so kurz, dass sie eigentlich gar nicht hätte sehen können, aber für einen unendlich kurzen Moment sah sie etwas Vertrautes in diesen Augen, etwas, das sie kannte und von dem sie geglaubt hätte, es nie wieder sehen zu können." "And then...something flared in those eyes. It happened very fast. Perhaps just in a fraction of a second, so quick, that she shouldn't had seen it at all, but for a moment she saw something familiar in those eyes, something she knew and she had thought to see never again. " Die Siedler von Catan by Rebecca Gable "Trotz der nassen Kleider hatten sie zu schwitzen begonnen. Sie sprachen nicht mehr, konzentrierten sich allein auf ihren Rythmus und schauten allenthalb über die Schulter. Das Dorf kam schnell näher, und bald sahen sie im hellen Mondlicht das Kampfgetümmel am Hafen." "Although their clothes were wet they had started to sweat. They didn't talk anymore, concentrated alone on their rythm and looked once in a while over their shoulder. The village quickly came closer and soon they saw the fighting riot at the harbour in the pale moonlight."

"He fought tenaciously, like the ant which bites knowing that it will be crushed, like the fly seeing through a glass. Ah! the earthen vessel defying the iron pan and breaking into a thousand pieces had something imposing about it: it had the sublimity of despair." El Filibusterismoby Jose Rizal
