Italy seals World Cup championship in penalties
Berlin, Germany (Sports Network) - France was the first to score, Italy was eventually the last, as Fabio Grosso converted the final penalty kick in a shootout to give Italy the tournament championship over France in Sunday's final match.
Grosso drilled a shot to give Italy the 5-3 win in penalties, after both teams finished 120 minutes of soccer in a 1-1 draw.
Zinedine Zidane opened the scoring in the seventh minute by converting a penalty kick to five France the early 1-0 lead. Zidane's chip shot deflected off the crossbar and in to the net for a goal.
The goal was Zidane's second converted penalty kick in as many matches and was the fastest goal in a World Cup final since 1974.
But 12 minutes later, Italy found the equalizer, when Marco Materazzi's header found the back of the net in the 19th minute to bring the score even at a goal each.
France opened the second half with numerous attacks, finding two more shots on goal before the end of 90 minutes. But the score remained locked in the 1-1 draw, leading to the 30 minute window of extra time.
Still locked in a 1-1 draw, France was forced to play with 10 players, when Zidane was ejected for head butting Materazzi in the chest. The captain, who is expected to retire from international soccer, left the field to boos.
Entering Sunday's match, France had never lost a championship match of any kind.

Zidane got a red card for headbutting another player but does anyone know why he did that?

It looked like they were chatting back and forth and zidane walked ahead of him and then all of the sudden I'm assuming the player said something he didn't like and Zidane turned around and *BOOM* headbutted himi right in the solar plexus
