Just in case anyone didn't get the message on yahoo....fawN's house was hit with lightning lastnight around 5PM NST and it fried her cable modem and computer. She's not sure when she'll be around next. Everyone is okay (thank the gods!) just a little puter problem. I'll let you know if I hear anything else.

*hugs you guys!* I got a replacement cable modem from Comcast, and can connect to the internet via Jason's computer for now. His and Jade's didn't take a hit like mine.. stare

I never like to use or be on other people's computers for long, but Jason created me a profile on his, so I can put a pretty Kacheek background on it, color up the appearance nice and girly, and kind of make the space mine, which helps. 4laugh

So far we know my motherboard took a hit (Jason showed me two capacitors on there which are swelling), my computer's power supply, our router, cable modem, and living room tv. The tv still works, but the outer edges of the screen are inked with odd colors.

I'm actually surprised that everyone's first concern was whether or not we all were ok, because I didn't realize lightning striking a house could actually harm people, unless they're outside in the rain and get struck themselves... but Jason says he was at a lightning safety meeting recently at work, and they talked about people getting shocked who were on the phone at the time, or taking a shower or bath. Does anybody know if there are other possibilities?

Oh, 2 more interesting facts I just thought of..

All things that were damaged were plugged into surge protectors. I'm wondering WHY my computer got it, but Jade's and Jason's didn't, when they're all on the same surge protector?

And Los Alamos is #2 on the list of places in the US that get a lot of lightning. I was asking Jason if it were possible to plug surge protectors into surge protectors for extra protection, but he says that's a no-no and can cause fires. I wonder what else we could do besides just unplug everything whenever it rains or seems like it's gonna. neutral There sure wasn't any other lightning around at the time when we got struck! It was raining, but we didn't hear any other thunder until the big ol' POW!!!

granny told me about the time lightning came in the fan over the stove and touched her...luckily it wasnt that bad a hit....

and then there was the time i was working with my dad, bad lightning storm came around...lightning stuck just 30 feet away from where we were all standing and when it did the hairs on our head stood up....(i ended up standing on big rig tires while the rest of the storm took place ninja )

Hubby (my Jason) sez that lightning will try to find the fastest way to "ground". So it is sounding like it is possible that the lightning followed the cable in instead of following the electricity, or vice versa and used the cable on it's way out. It all depends on how and what is grounded properly.

And yup on the taking a bath/shower or talking on the phone.

The cold water pipes are generally used as "ground" as that they are coming into the house from below ground level. And the phone is also grounded. I think a cordless or cell phone doesn't pose the same threat as a grounded phone... but I am not absolutely certain.

Kind of like Mr Franklin and his kite string.. dontcha think?

This helps explain it.. Jason's computer and Jade's computer are on one surge protector while my computer was on another. That's why theirs survived. sweatdrop I swore I asked Jason after it happened if they were all on the same surge protector.. maybe he misunderstood me or I misunderstood him.

I'd like to have a look onto the roof sometime. My dad says we'll be able to tell where it hit.

i saw a natural history programme a few years back , they were on a beach after a lightning strike, they could see where it had struck so they dug down into the sand and unearthed the most amazing thing, the heat from the strike had turned the sand into glass, in the perfect shape of the lightning bolt, these structures are called fulgurites 3nodding

Ooh, they talk about and show those in the movie Sweet Home Alabama with Reese Witherspoon. They look really pretty!

Jason looked up some on the internet, but they didn't look as cool (or as clear or shiny) and looked all sandy, so I wonder if they have to be smoothed and polished to look like in the movie?

And I'm not exactly sure where to put this, but Jason's upstairs on our balcony sanding the decks and Jade was up there with him. She ran her finger down the sharp metal slats on the backside of our window air-conditioner and sliced her finger, and I heard her crying (knew it wasn't the usual 'whine, cry, where are you mommy?' cry, and I rushed upstairs. Her finger was sliced pretty deep like a bunch of fish gills and her finger was pouring blood in the sink. It took a while for the bleeding to stop, and of course it hurts a lot because they're pretty deep cuts. But they seem to be holding closed ok, and although I was thinking 'stitches?' or 'butterfly strips?', it looks like as long as she's careful, they should stay shut. Scary moment, so had to unload it somewhere!

We woke up to the sound of thunder Tuesday morning, which was not great as we had invited about 30 people over for a 4th of July pool party, but thunder is as far as it got in my corner of the desert, although we did have a flash flood warning come over te TV earlier today saying watch out until 2:15PM. I generally love the thunder and lightening on the desert, but then again...
We recently moved George outside (he loves when we are out there using the pool) sure hope I don't end up with lightening-qued pork!
