In May 1979, 20th Century Fox released the landmark film that is Ridley Scott's Alien. It inspired 3 sequels, numerous spin-offs, and set the standards for modern Science Fiction and Horror. Since it's release in 1979, Alien has become an enduring movie classic- a startling tale of otherworldly terror and primal human fear, fusing traditional and beloved elements of Horror (particularly "haunted house" films) and Science Fiction, giving birth to a whole new type of Horror movies. The film was hailed by critics and audiences worldwide as masterpiece in both Science Fiction and Horror genres, and went on to gross over $100 million worldwide, a remarkable number for that era. Alien launched the career of Sigourney Weaver, whose character Ellen Ripley became one of the genre's first and most enduring heroines. The movie won an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, as well as a British Academy Award for Best Art Direction. The film has gone down in history as one of the top 10 most terrifying movies of all time, one of the greatest Science Fiction films of all time, and one of the greatest Horror movies of all time. Throughout the years, the Alien franchise has become one of the most well-known and enjoyed movie series of all time, with the first two (Alien and Aliens) being the most notable ones in the series.
This being said, Alien is my favorite Horror movie of all time. Although it wasn't the first Horror movie I've seen, it was the film that got me into Horror movies. The second one was my favorite in the series, but it was an Action movie rather than a Horror movie. So, what did you think of the Alien movies?
