Username: Numerica
Character Name: Carys Annabelle Jones
Age: 22
Race: Carys knows that only part of her heritage is human, but she doesn’t know what the nonhuman part is.
Sex: Female
Appearance:
Carys has long auburn hair, which, in the past at least, she often wore down to cover her slightly pointy ears. She has the pale skin tone so often associated with red hair, and sunburns very easily. She has green eyes, which have cat-pupils. In the past, she had worn colored contacts to hide this. She is fairly tall, but not exceptionally so. She rarely wears makeup, and would probably be referred to as “cute” rather then “pretty.” Much to her disgust, it is very difficult for her to look anything but naïve and innocent, due to the shape of her face and her coloring. Her best attempts at evil smiles only result in her looking like a mischievous child. She often uses this to her advantage, allowing people to think she is innocent and naïve. Her rather voluptuous figure should cancel out this effect, but it rarely does.
She prefers lose and flowing clothing. She wears jeans or long, flowing skirts with blouses in summer and sweaters in winter. Her favorite colors are blue and purple, but she will occasionally wear green.
Personality:
Carys is a little shy, but very passionate about things she cares about, and talkative so long as she know the people she is talking to. She is loyal to those she considers friends, and generally trusts people until they give her reason not to. Her driving force is curiosity. She doesn’t like large crowds of people, and sometimes has panic attacks in social situations.
History:
Carys has some type of non-human blood in her family, as evidenced by her slightly pointy ears, cat-pupiled eyes, empathy, and strange reaction to electricity. Her mother insists that her side of the family is completely human, and Carys’ father died when she was very little. One of Carys’ goals now that she is out of college is to find out more about her father’s family and see if she can track down the source of her oddness. Her mother has always encouraged her to hide that she was anything but fully human. A couple of bad experiences with “friends” who abandoned her as soon as they found out convinced Carys her mother was right.
She was home schooled by her mother, who, working as a teacher, knew how bad the public school system was, but couldn’t afford a private school.(Avoiding to much exposure of her other then human nature was also an important secondary consideration.) To take the place of Phys. Ed., her mother enrolled her in martial arts classes, seeing them as doubly beneficial. Carys got exercise and learned how to defend herself. At the age of 10, Carys started learning to fight with a staff, and thereafter concentrated on that. When Carys reached high school level her mother paid her fellow teachers to tutor Carys once a week in the subjects her mother wasn’t certified in, which still wasn’t nearly as expensive a private school. Carys is very intelligent, and tested her way to a degree at 16, in spite, or because of, her somewhat unusual education. However, she didn’t get much experience dealing with large groups of people. Also, because of her mother’s work schedule, she had “school” in the evenings, and usually didn’t get until her mother was about to come home, which established the somewhat nocturnal habit which she had to fight during college.
Carys was received a full-scholarship to a somewhat prestigious college. She made up for getting out of high school two years early by dithering so much about her major that she spent six years there. She maintained a high GPA, which meant she didn’t lose her scholarship, even with all her dithering. Her past majors include, but are not limited to, Anthropology, Archeology, and Accounting. She finally graduated with a BA in English. However, she had some difficulty finding a job post-degree. She has no interest in teaching, and hadn’t really considered her career while choosing her major. She had a part-time job in the school library, and had saved up some money, which she was living off while looking for a job.
She loves to read, particularly fantasy, science fiction and her guilty pleasure, romance. She’ll read just about anything though, and makes a point to read one non-fiction book a month. She also enjoys music, but has somewhat eclectic tastes, and no talent with any instrument, including her own voice. She makes scented candles, soaps, and lotions, partially because she dislikes the flowery scents prevalent in stores, and partially because she enjoys the process of making them . She can cook, but doesn’t particularly enjoy it. She has kept in practice with her staff, although she dislikes actual fights because she is often unable to block out her opponents pain.
Additional Information:
Carys is Empathetic, but has little control other then to shield others emotions out. She can’t “read” someone and tell what there emotions are, as when she lowers her shields, she feels the emotions of those around her as if they were her own. Strong emotions leave an imprint in objects which she can sometimes pick up. If the imprint is strong enough she sometimes receives images or sounds, or in extreme cases visions.
Carys has exceptional night and low-light vision. Like a cat, she can’t see in total darkness, but her eyes make efficient use of what light there is. Also like a cat, in low-light conditions her eyes often seem to glow. When she is wearing contacts, her vision is slightly impaired. Her field of vision is cut of on the top and bottom and her night-vision is no better then a regular humans.
Carys found out through a very young childhood experiment with a butter knife and an electrical outlet that electricity does not harm her. Her curiosity outweighing her prudence, she repeated the experiment as a teenager to confirm this and discovered that it energized her. Through further experimentation she discovered that she could “feed” off of electricity, using it to for energy and (temporarily, at least) removing her need to eat. She has never tried to do this for an extended period of time, so she doesn’t know if it actually replaces food, or if she would starve if she tried. As she is generally very hungry after the effect wears off, she suspects she would starve. If she has “charged up” recently, by focusing on her hands she can make trails of electricity surround them. This disappears as soon as she stops focusing. She has never touched anyone or anything with her hands like that, and doesn’t know for sure if it would do damage. She believes it would, although she is unsure how much. It is possible that with practice she might be able to control the voltage. It is also possible that she might be able to create directed lightening strikes, but again she has not had opportunity to experiment with this. She also hasn’t noticed that when “charged” too much, she has a tendency to act like a child who has had entirely to much sugar, bouncing all over the place both physically and mentally.
