I knew, because before I had ANY FF game, I got on the internet and found out everything about the games. So I knew Aeris died crying and that Kefka became a god. I wonder how different it would have been not knowing these things. Who actually had no clue about Kefka, that "goofy comic relief guy" would be the boss?

Man I'm not sure. I mean it's been ten years and I know the game so intimately now that I cannot exactly remember. I think I had high expectations of him and that scene where he is locked up at the banquet threw me off. But I do remember being somewhat shocked when he killed Ghestal. For a long time I suspected Gogo was kefka.

I was told by some "friends" that Kefka killed Gestahl and took over the world, but I didn't really believe them, so I sort of knew but not really. I was surprised when he became a demigod though. I couldn't even have ballparked that one. The scattering of the party also took me by surprise, took me forever to find Shadow.
As for Aeris' death, I was caught completely off guard since I played that without listening to anyone about anything, having learned my lesson from the previous, better game. I felt sad, she was my favorite at the time. Everyone else was either too stupid or too self involved to really interest me.

I missed shadow the first time because when you run to the edge of the floating continent it only gives you two options, so if you wait and come back then it gives the option to wait for shadow. I just thought wait meant "oh crap its the end and i missed some treasure, ill go back" and i didnt want to risk it so i jumped. As for aeris, someone told me about that the day I got the game. I was in a final fantasy chatroom and i said I just got ff7, and this guy goes "dude it sucks when aeris dies"

Well, one of the first things I saw from FFVI was my friend's brother beating the game, and even though I was really young, somewhere in the back of my mind Kefka registered as being the villain, and I always saw him as such since his first scene. He just seemed.... evil. sweatdrop
And Aeris' death was a little surprising, but if I had been playing Final Fantasy games before then, it would have been even less surprising. She's just another name to add to Josef, Palom and Porom, and Galuf. =\

I feel lucky, I was 10 when the game came out, so I didn't have the opportunity to see an older kid beat it.
Really though, I think they set it up from the beginning so that you'd be surprised when Kefka took ultimate power. I mean, his first appearance is him whining about how he has to go through the desert, then he makes the idiots sweep the sand off his boots. Third time you meet him he runs after each hit. They make him out to be some sort of comic relief, then BOOM! He fuggin' blows up the planet. Square kicked a** back then.

I think I did, because before I played FF6, I read lots of discussion about it. I've been spoiled somehow with pretty much every FF game I've ever played, actually. I'm hoping to avoid spoilers for FF12. sweatdrop

I knew; I can't remember how, but I knew. It was the only thing about FFVI that had been spoiled for me, though.
But FFVII was a whole other story. That might be one of the reasons I was so dissappointed with 7... Hmm...

I thought the fact that he was such a powerful leader-type that he could get soldiers to sweep off his shoes showed potential in him. I figured he'd be more like.... a sub boss, but not the "real" thing.

I honestly thought the same thing...that is, until Gestahl was killed , the statues moved and most of the planets surfaces horribly scarred. What a loop that threw me for.....I actuallly thought that I had done something wrong.

I wasn't too surprised about who killed Gestahl because I was like "Yeah, Kefka always seemed like an evil guy o_o" Though, Gestahl (and Leo) dieing did surprise me.

Judyfay Sins I actually shivvered in satisfaction when Celes stabbed kefka. That would be quite an awesome scene if they remade it today...not that they will.
