I was curious as to whether any of my fellow phans were mezzo-sopranos or altos facing the same sadness as I have. I love having a rich low voice. Unfortunatley, it means I have pretty much zero chance of ever being able to perform in the musical. The lead was written for one of the worlds greatest sopranos (I <3 Sarah Brightman) and the part for Carlotta is even higher overall! The only female song in the whole show that allows for low voice is "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again." The only parts us altos could possibly attempt are Meg, Madame Giry, or a chorus part. As much fun as that would be, I still feel jealous for the wonderful sopranos who receive all the glory in this show.

This is a "support group" for any mezzos or altos who feel that same sadness. You have my love! heart

Actually, Christine's part could be done by a mezzo with coloratura extension... All you really need is to master the cadenzas in Think of Me and the title song (and I know some mezzos who can do it, too); the rest is easily within average mezzo range.

And think about this... It's a lot easier for an alto to get a coveted role than it is a soprano, owing to the high number of sopranos who go into music.

Fox is correct.

I'm a mezzo-soprano and I can perform the songs easily after warming up to the higher notes a bit beforehand. I can also successfully do quite a bit of Opera.

Mezzo-sopranoes are actually more common in theater than you think.

Actually, I used to be a mezzo, but Phantom is slowly turning me into a soprano. -_-

Ditto. I'm easily a mezzo-soprano but I can also sing some alto and a lot of soprano.

I am actually pretty good soprano because I can hit higher notes, but I can also be an alto, I just can sing like really low notes. "Wishing you were somehow here again" is kind of hard at some points for me.... anyways... yeah mrgreen

I'm an alto 2 (low alto) and although it means I can't sing any of Christine's songs, I consider it a Fair trade because I can sing Music of the Night, my favorite song in the whole play!!! rofl

Hm. Same problem here. I used to be baritone-bass, but after I discovered Phantom I've turned into more of a baritone-tenor. eek

I'm an alto in Madrigals and Choir, but I seem to be getting a voice-change... My voice is a little bit higher.
Does Phantom, like warp peoples vocal cords or something eek

I can sing lots of Nightwish... But it's a trade, considering that I can sing Raoul's part better than Christine's. T.T

If they just brought it down an octave, I could theoretically do it. Trouble is, I've had no training save for about two weeks, therefore my voice, while okay, is terribly off-key.

Just about all of my range is in 'Twisted every way' though. I can sing Christine in that.

I'm a bass, and I'm so sad about that. cry

I like my deep voice, but I can't sing "Music of the Night" or "All I ask of you" or any other song from my favourite musical (so I know how you feel). crying

Oh well, at least I could be a good Caiaphas from Jesus Christ Superstar. sweatdrop

Being an alto sucks.

I'm an alto in choir, but that's only because of the low part of my range and because there are only like 7 altos counting me. xd I guess I'm a second soprano, but I'm trying to make my voice higher by singing more of the higher songs.

I have real trouble with the second half of Think of Me and of Angel of Music. x_x I can sing the title song fine(except for when Christine goes crazy with the high notes at the end), and most of Point of No Return and pretty much all of Wishing You Were Somehow Here again. I can also sing Erik and Raoul's parts okay most of the time. Except for Music of the Night. ><

I would give ANYTHING to be a first soprano, even if it turned me into Carlotta!! gonk

*nods* I'm an alto, but I sing kinda like a tenor, so in my school musicals I get cast as a guy alot (actually, always). It's aweful. No doubt if my school ever did Phantom, (not likely) I'd be cast as Erik, and have to sing to some girl playing the role I want, that of Christine. *shudder* oh God... The horror...
