There doesn't happen to be an online test that can measure the number of Kanji I know, is there? I would appreciate it.
I'm new here by the way, 宜しくお願いします。

I was really hoping for one too, but it seems the only way you can see is the JLPT, but you only use the kanji that are required for each level.

I don't think you have to pay for it, but you do have to sign up in advance. I was hoping to do it this year, but I don't know enough of the level 4 kanji. And there's some other things on the test so you have to know the language kind of well and you have to know kana.

Kana isn't a problem.
I don't think there's any excuse to not have Kana, that took me a week. (Tuttle: A Guide to Learning Hiragana and Katakana).
I just want to know how far along I am with Kanji, I know it isn't much.

I beat you. I learned and remembered the hiragana in three hours and most of the katakana in three hours. That's six hours in one day using Remembering the Kana by James W. Heisig.

Wow, hats off. mrgreen Did you continue to remember it? Having to write them over and over imprinted them in my brain. I learned my Kanji (the Kanji I know of) the same way with Kanji power.

I can read and write all of the hiragana without looking back except む. I tend to forget it. I sometimes have to look back for some of the katakana, but I mostly remember them. I constantly Write knaji to practice writing them and to see how many I can remember. 3nodding

I always remember hiragana, katakana on the other hand I have problems remembering sometimes since they aren't used as often. That only applies to writing though, I'll recognize a character when I see it, but when I try to write in Japanese (not something I do often) I get these mental pauses. I never remember or even recognize ヲ and ヌ, I have to look them up. I think those two are the most rare. I don't even bother to practice writing Kanji. I'm a perfectionist, so writing with Kanji would take me forever, and I doubt I could remember how to write them. I put all my Kanji effort in recognition. I use this website for memorizing them: http://www.kanjisite.com/

I use Remembering the Kanji by James W. Heisig. He's really good at teaching. If you'd like I have my own thread for learning kanji. I'm still working on it, but you can check every one in a while to see if there's any new one. And to try the method without buying the book. 3nodding
I think it's a bit off topic now, so we should probably continue our conversation either in my thread or over PMs.
Also, What does the kanji say?

If you have a pc with windows XP (i'm sure of any earlier ones) go to start>all programs>accessories>system tools>character map. For macs I don't know and If it's not there I also don't know.

On the topic of the JLPT, you have to pay about $40 for the 4th level test, if I rememeber correctly. ^^ I took it last year and passed with an 82%, because I suck at kanji... ¬ ¬
