Smudging I can't help you with, but circles are fairly easy.
Step 1: Clear an area Clear any debris or items that are not part of your circle or spell.
Step 2: Cleanse the area Cleansing can be done by smudging (unsure of how to do it), or by sweeping the area with a broom and lighting a stick of incence.
Step 3: Draw the circle Using either salt or stones draw you circle clockwise, or if your outside you can use a stick to carve it into the dirt/sand.
Step 4: Call upon the elements Started at the North end of your circle call upon the elements or watchtowers to protect your circle, move in a clockwise direction.
Step 5: Use your circle Begin meditating, doing your ritual, or doing your spell.

There are many ways to cast a circle. It's all down to personal preference. When I get time, I'll be posting up a circle casting thread in the beginers guide. Thanks for poking me to do it. sweatdrop
Smudging.. I've not done it before, but what I think it basically is lighting the stick and literally smudging it over things. JVCA is the one to ask. ^_^

There are two things people commonly use for smudging... one is incense ash... the other I forget. Lighting a stick and smudging a will with it may seem like a good idea... But theres a bit of a fire hazard involved, so I'd say it's a no-no. Basically you smudge each wall with incense ash to cleanse a room. more detail from Jess or Kato maybe... Probably SOMETHING I've forgotten.

Everyone's depending on me to answer! gonk ...I actually don't know, but... http://www.crystalinks.com/smudging.htmlThat's an article on smudging there. Basically, I think, despite the name, it's not covering something in smudges of ash- It's cleansing something with the incense smoke- all you need to do is run the smoke over the object you wish to purify- don't dirty up your walls. xd

Lol... Many people DO use the incense ash on the wall... sometimes in the shape of a 'smudge' and sometimes a pentacle...
We thought you'd know a bit 'coz I'm pretty sure you did it in your room already...

The banishing spell I did in my room involved what I'm assuming to be smudging, yes. I drew a pentacle and then stabbed it at NE, SE, SW, and NW...
