Kaleb's Notes

User Image

In a small, dusty corner, looking rather tiny and delicate sitting on top a large stack of massive magical textbooks, there is a small notebook. It doesn't look like much, no writing on the front to indicate what it might be, but Kaleb's name appears hastily written inside the front cover in a graceful, yet somewhat illegible scrawl.

You've found Kaleb's research notes, which contain quite a bit more than just research.

Please note, Kaleb's own writing is in grey.

The kid's pretty good about people messing through his stuff, so take a peek if you want, or leave a note tucked into the pages for him to read (and write about later. ^_^).

Bio

Name: Kaleb
Nicknames: None yet. I get called "kid" and "dork" a lot though. x_x
Text Colour: Gray (#668399)
Class: Medic Mage (former White Mage)

Likes: Being useful, textbooks, bandaids, "quiet time", libraries, chocolate.
Dislikes: Blood, fiends, the dark, spicy foods, loud noises.
Abilities: Primarily healing and protection skills, but you never know... O.o
Weaknesses: Blood(especially if it's his own), anything/anyone intimidating, activities involving high stamina or strength.

Personality: The scrawny kid has a timid personality at first glance, he is nervous around new people and he gets frightened easily. His anxious gestures are numerous, including adjusting his glasses, biting his lip, or chewing on a thumbnail. He is not nearly as skittish when you get to know him, when he is a friend he is a friend for life and he has a lopsided smile that can draw out a spark of compassion and protectiveness from pretty much anyone. Under pressure he can collect a bit of bravery, and even if his legs shake and he feels ready to faint, he'll keep going forward. You give me too much credit. -___-

History: As a child, Kaleb thought he would be a surgeon when he grew up, and dedicate himself to saving lives. His dreams were rudely shattered when he first fainted at the sight of blood, and were then ground to dust as time went on and his reaction didn't lessen or go away. The only thing that gave him direction was his desire to heal, so he began to pursue magical recovery and damage prevention as an alternative to surgery. He soon became frustrated with the limitations as a white mage, and began his own research to find more effective methods of healing and protection.

Relationships

Kaleb's not a very social person, but he does enjoy some company every now and again. He's always very fond of his friends, and is likely to talk about people he's met after he's run into them a couple times.

Demyx - Demyx was the first Audio I met at the shop, and only because I happened to be holding a box of cookies at the time. He seems pretty innocent and naive, but he's also fun to be around, and I think I trust him more than anyone.

Ukitake - Ukitake was the second Audio I... ran into. He's a very kind, calm person, and I find it easier to talk to him than I usually do when I meet new people. He seems very wise, like someone you could go to for advice or help if you needed it.

Charlie - Charlie is the first Audio I've met who's interested in magic, he's even decided he wants to learn a bit and asked me if I could help him out if he needed it. Last time he showed me a nice little cloud, I'm eager to see what he's managed since.

Morganna - I first met Morganna when she wasn't wearing her headphones, and she was nice enough to help me find the book I had lost. I was afraid she would hate me after learning how I am with blood, but Miranda told me she wouldn't mind talking with me again.

Miranda - Morganna introduced me to Miranda one day, and I don't think I've ever met anyone as enthusiastic and energetic. I'm really glad she's taken up cooking, she seems to really enjoy it, and it's nice to see her happy. I think I'm a little nervous around her right now, I've never been kissed by a girl before.

Rikku - Rikku found me sleeping on a bench outside, and it was pretty embarassing. Luckily she has the same kind of friendly enthusiasm as Miranda, although maybe not in such large quantities. At this point I don't know whether she had me flustered naturally, or just because I had been half asleep when I met her. I wouldn't mind seeing a bit more of her magic, though.

Naruto - Naruto is a friend of Miranda's, I also met him when I met Rikku. He strikes me as being a very protective guy, very passionate about his friends, and very honest. Perhaps a little too honest sometimes.

Luxord - I first met Luxord for the first time while I was on my way to the mall to pick up a book. I can understand why Demyx speaks so highly of him, he's always been polite to me, and went through great efforts to comfort me that day in the library. I still feel awkward about needing the comfort in the first place, but he seemed to be okay with it.

Felicia - I also met Felicia on that day at the mall. I still don't know how to describe my relationship with her, she seemed to vary between wanting to keep me safe and happy to wanting... other things from me. I think I can get used to that though.

Lainey - I don't really know Lainey too well, but she was very nice to talk to. She was interested in magic, but I don't know if she got anywhere with what I showed her.

Aiden - I've only had a chance to talk with Aiden once, but apparently he had heard a lot about me from Rikku and Relm. He was a real gentleman.

Yahto - It honestly takes all my attention to understand and remember everything Yahto says so I can respond appropriately, but he's very nice and enthusiastic. I don't know him too well yet though.

Charlamagne - I've talked to Charlamagne a couple times, but she's always seemed kind. I haven't had much of a chance to really get to know her.

Keme - I've met Keme more than a couple times, and although I don't know him very well I got the impression that he's very protective of those he cares about.

Nonet - I didn't know Demyx and Luxord had children until I met Nonet at the park. She also has an interest in magic, and I really enjoy having someone else to talk about it with.

Bandages - I met Bandages at the beach on the day Demyx transformed. She seemed to whine and complain a lot, but I don't know if that was because she was scared of going in the water, or just lonely and wanted our attention.

Vivace - I met Vivace in the park one afternoon while taking a break from my studying. I was amazed at how similar he was to Demyx, he definitely likes to have fun and not worry so much about stuff. I definitely feel very comfortable around him, I hardly feel nervous at all.

Rufus - After the first time we met, somehow Rufus managed to find out where I lived and what my magic skills were, and pressed me into working for him. He's not an unkind employer, but I think I'll need some more time before I feel completely comfortable around him.

Tseng - I don't know Tseng at all, really, but he seems pretty patient. Even when he's threatening to drag you out of your apartment he seems patient, and all business.

Reno - I'm slowly getting used to Reno, he seems to say whatever it is he's got on his mind regardless of what the consiquences could be. I still can't tell when he's serious and when he's not, and he seems to alternate between trying to reassure me and trying to put me off balance.

Rude - He's still just as intimidating as he was the first time I saw him, just not as frightening. I haven't seen him say much or show much emotion, but he acts kind enough towards me. I just wish he wouldn't be so insistent on not being healed when he has an injury.

Song Details

Kaleb listens to Adagio, the 2nd Movement of the Triple Concerto. The piece was composed by Johann Sebastian Bach in 1730, during the Baroque era of music. Although the title Triple Concerto is used to refer to this piece, the work is originally titled "Concerto for flute, violin and harpsichord".

The Triple Concerto has three movements, Adagio being the second. The term Adagio is used in musical notation to indicate the piece is to be played at a slow tempo. Kaleb finds this slower pace of this particular movement relaxing, so it is a good way to keep his day to day anxiety levels lower.

Music from the Baroque era has a number of distinctive features. The common instruments include woodwinds, strings, and the harpsichord, and in a way these instruments influenced the musical style of the era. Since the piano hadn't yet been invented, the harpsichord was often used. This instrument plucks at the strings to produce a sound instead of striking them like in the piano, which resulted in a more limited range in dynamics compared to the piano in later eras.

Baroque melodies are lively and highly complex, including many elaborations and trills. Many ornamented melodies are unsuited for vocals, which were dominant in the previous era, but they do show off the capabilities of the instruments being developed at the time. The tempo of Baroque music is very inflexible, it does not flow and change like the music of he Classical era which followed it, instead remaining steady throughout a piece.

Current Research

It's not all fun and games for Kaleb, he spends quite a bit of time hidden away with an arcane tome or magical text, researching abilities and techniques. He gets sidetracked sometimes and then grumps about it later, so now I make him keep a checklist. x_x;;

Resurrect
Protect from Magic
Protect from Physical
- Reflect - Physical, convert elemental damage? D:
Cure/Prevent status conditions (What on earth is Status Clear Tree A?)
