Bassoon sounds WAY cooler in my opinion... And being a bass clarinetist who learned a bit of bassoon: Take your time wtih it, be patient. It's hard and takes a lot of time, but fun none the less. 3nodding

Go to Bassoon. It's a money instrament. It's a bit costly, but if you want to go to college for music study, or just want into a higher level band, and you know how to play bassoon really good, they'll take you almost instantly. 3nodding

Well they both'll need lots of pratice, and you should probably take lessons. But if you want to go into college with a music degree I'd say the basson and anyways the basson is better than the oboe.

I'd say oboe, but I'm probably prejudiced (can't spell, sorry!) because I play one. ^^

if you have long elegant fingers then you should play bassoon because it would be easier for you..if you had long fingers and you played oboe then it might be harder to reach the notes and i think you should play bassoon because i play it mrgreen blaugh xd

Well it really depends on what kind of part you want to play. Oboe has more of the melody part with the flutes and clarinets. Basoon is usually harmony I think.
I personally like oboe better since I play it, and the parts are more interesting[[to me]].

Being a Bassoonist who used to be a Flautist playing some Oboe parts, I'd have to say go with what you think is best. Personally I love both instruments, and it does depend on what you plan to do in the future. There is indeed a shortage of capable Bassoon players who then go on to study the instrument at a higher level, so playing one is a great benefit in that respect. It does take allot of practice and dedication, and is quite awkward when first starting, but the sound you receive is most rewarding.
My first reaction to it was 'how many thumb keys does this thing have and what crazy person invented such an awkward instrument'? xD But gradually I've gotten used to it. I'm not at this stage yet, but I have been told that one of the octaves does touch alto clef? Don't berate me if I'm wrong, this is just what my teacher has made mention of xD
I think that base clarinet also shares allot of the same parts as bassoon. My band's does, but it will probably vary from ensemble to ensemble. When I played oboe parts as a flautist, we either harmonised the actual flute parts, or played an octave lower then they did, so if you want to ditch Base Clarinet for want of melody, Oboe would be your best bet. I'm told that Orchestral Pieces for bassoons are a little more interesting then band, though xD Either way you go, at a later stage you should be able to swap to the other if you want. My teacher plays both.

Much of what Notturna said is correct (bassoon can go up to about a third space E on treble clef, but it's not easy), but just to let you know: if you are using a school instrument, unless there is some fantastic miracle, the bassoon will not be in playing shape. It's a sad fact that most school bassoons are in terrible shape. So, get it looked at by someone who knows bassoons. If it's really bad, you may just want to try oboe. sweatdrop
