|~|Egyptian Lore|~| Nepthys: Responsible For: Immortality, Justice, Water, Weather, Wild Birds, Moon and Night, The Underworld
Nephthys (or Nebthet) is generally interpreted by Egyptologists as the Dark Twin of Isis. They are sisters married to Their own brothers.
Nephthys was the personification of darkness and all that belongs to it. She was the daughter of Nut, sister of Isis, and wife of Set. Nephthys was one of those present at the assessment of the souls in the underworld, standing next to her sister Isis behind the throne of Osiris. Her headdress is a combination of the hieroglyphs for "lady" and "house", meaning "lady of the mansion".
When her husband killed Osiris, Nephthys went to aid her sister Isis. They governed the country together, and when Isis found the body, Nephthys helped her reassemble it.
In Egyptian mythology, Nephthys (spelt Nebet-het, and Nebt-het, in transliteration from hieroglyphs) is one of the Ennead of Heliopolis, a daughter of Nut and Geb, and the wife of Set. She was originally Set's dualistic counterpart, representing the air, whereas Set originally represented the desert. In ancient Egypt, the oldest female in the house was given the honorary title of Nephthys, and she was popular even in the Greco-Roman period.
Consequently she was named Nebt-het, which means lady of the house, the house being a colloquial term for the sky, a use also present in the name of Hathor, meaning house of horus. In art, she was depicted as a hawk, representative of the air, or as a woman with a hawk's wings, usually outstretched as a symbol of protection. She was shown crowned by the hieroglyphic of her name, which was the sign for a house (het), with the sign for neb, which could also mean basket, on top of it.
Because Set represented the barren desert, Set was seen at first as infertile, and subsequently as homosexual, and so Nepthys was seen as childless. As she was also seen as a bird, she gradually became seen as a vulture, which the Egyptians believed never had children because they were thought to all be female (the Egyptians thought that vultures were spontaneously created from air). Although vultures were seen in a positive light, their feeding behaviour nevertheless led them to be associated also with decay and death, and so Nepthys too gradually became a goddess of death and decay.Isis: Responsible For: Love, Sexuality, Ceremonies, Health and Healing, Immortality
Isis was one of the great goddesses, the most popular member of the Egyptian pantheon, revered for her magical powers and for her devotion to her husband, Osiris, and to their son, Horus.
Isis and her sister, Nephthys, acted as divine mourners of the dead. Together with the goddesses Neith and Selket they protected coffins and Canopic jars - Isis had the task of protecting the jar containing the liver.
Her name literally means (female) of throne, i.e. Queen of the throne, and the emblem worn on her head was that of a throne. However, the hieroglyph for her name used originally meant (female) of flesh, i.e. mortal, and she may simply have represented deified, real, queens.
Isis, the Egyptian goddess of rebirth remains one of the most familiar images of empowered and utter femininity. The goddess Isis was the first daughter of Geb, god of the Earth, and Nut, the goddess of the Overarching Sky. Isis was born on the first day between the first years of creation, and was adored by her human followers.
Unlike the other Egyptian goddesses, the goddess Isis spent time among her people, teaching women how to grind corn and make bread, spin flax and weave cloth, and how to tame men enough to live with them (an art form on which many of us would welcome a refresher course!) Isis taught her people the skills of reading and agriculture and was worshipped as the goddess of medicine and wisdom.
More than any other of the ancient Egyptian goddesses, Isis embodied the characteristics of all the lesser goddesses that preceded her. Isis became the model on which future generations of female dieties in other cultures were to be based. As the personification of the "complete female", Isis was called "The One Who Is All", Isis Panthea ("Isis the All Goddess"), and the "Lady of Ten Thousand Names".
The goddess Isis, a moon goddess, gave birth to Horus, the god of the sun. Together, Isis and Horus created and sustained all life and were the saviors of their people.
Isis became the most powerful of the gods and goddesses in the ancient world. Ra, the God of the Sun, originally had the greatest power. But Ra was uncaring, and the people of the world suffered greatly during his reign.
The goddess Isis tricked him by mixing some of his saliva with mud to create a poisonous snake that bit him, causing him great suffering which she then offered to cure. He eventually agreed.
Isis informed Ra that, for the cure to work, she would have to speak his secret name (which was the source of his power over life and death). Reluctantly, he whispered it to her.
When Isis uttered his secret name while performing her magic, Ra was healed. But the goddess Isis then possessed his powers of life and death, and quickly became the most powerful of the Egyptian gods and goddesses, using her great powers to the benefit of the people.
Isis was called the Mother of Life, but she was also known as the Crone of Death. Her immense powers earned her the titles of "The Giver of Life" and "Goddess of Magic".
