Name: Dendrobates lehmanni

Natural Habitat: Rainforests of Colombia. Exists at ground and occasionally within the lower stratum of the lower canopy.

Appearance: Lehmann's poison frog is one of the larger dendrobatids at 31 to 36 mm. There are three color morphs of D. lehmanni; red, orange, and yellow against a black or bark brown background. The frog is mainly dark colored and is encircled by two brightly colored bands. One band is behind the head and the other is around the hump of the back. The brightly colored patterns are broken up irregularly by the dark. The arms and legs are also circled by the bright colors. The bright color pattern that these frogs have developed is called an aposematic coloration. It is supposed to warn possible predators that they are very poisonous. The skin of D. lehmanni is smooth and the first digit is a little shorter then the second.

About the Poison: Dendrobates lehmanni produce toxins in their skin that can be very poisonous. Some of the native tribes of Columbia coat their darts with the poison produced by the frogs. When bred in captivity the frogs are not poisonous because the diet that they are fed lacks the precursors needed to produce the poison.

Went to a hands-on museum once with Teagan. Really liked his tail - and the other's hyperactivity.

Written in a little blue book...

April 12, 2005: 8:03 PM

Maybe I'm crazy? Maybe THEY'RE crazy. Who knows? I guess I don't really think that, but the whole thing seems kind of weird, doesn't it? Leaves growing into creatures? Feh. It's absurd...

So why am I doing this? Because I help creatures from another plane of existance get help here with mortals. I have no room to call people crazy, do I? Nope.

Anyway... I receieved a leaf today. It's a cute leaf, I guess. Just looks like a leaf, to me. Maybe I'm just not special? It's perfectly healthy, which is a bit... odd for a leaf not on a tree, isn't it? Don't they usually wilt...? This one's all vibrant and healthy, though.

I put the stem of it in a little shot-glass of water, though. I didn't want to risk it wilting! Besides, it seemed thirsty... Can leaves be thirsty?

Maybe I am crazy.

Jadaria sighed softly, sitting at the bar between the kitchen and dining rooms. She was hunched over, resting her head on one arm, gazing at a little glass nearby and poking at a leaf sticking out of it with her free hand. Her glasses were pushed away, and she didn't even really seem to be interested in them.

She'd been sitting there for an hour, maybe more, just staring at the glass. At first, she'd gotten a weird, nervous feeling from it. Afterwards, it had slowly begun to 'warm up' to her, gradually becoming calmer and, perhaps, slightly happy. And that, indeed, was what was perplexing its keeper so very much. Leaves... didn't give off emotions!

She wasn't the only one that had noticed, however. Kashimi was extremely interested in the leaf, and the Dream usually wasn't interested in much of anything but sweets. So there was definately something up with it... but what?

Jadaria sighed, sitting up for the first time in a while. She groaned, cracking her back, then picked up the glass gingerly.

"Guess I'd better put you somewhere safe... don't want anyone to knock you over, do we?" She pursed her lips thoughtfully, then smiled. "Ah! The greenhouse. That'll be good for you, won't it...?"

She giggled at herself. Talking to a leaf!

Accomplished today: Leaf recieved. Put in water in shotglass for safe keeping. Glass placed in greenhouse for warmth and to keep away from the pets.

Eh, I swear, something's up with that leaf... it's got to be! I mean, really...

I put it in water last night - put it out in the greenhouse. Seemed like a good enough place for a leaf, right? I swear I thought it was thirsty... Anyway. I got up this morning to check it and ALL of the water was gone! Like a fish!

So I filled it up again.

Guess what happened when I got home today? Mm-hmm. Water's all gone again, poor little thing looking all wilty and... pouty. I know leaves can't be pouty, but this one can. I know it sounds crazy, but... Oh well. There's a lot of crazy things around.

Guess we'll just have to see.

Jadaria leaned back in her chair, feet propped up amongst the plants, eyes focused on the little glass with its rapidly draining water and its odd leaf. She'd been thinking about it all day - she knew the story, but she still couldn't comprehend how a plant... a plant! Not even a plant! A leaf could act this way!

She watched the leaf wiggle, then seemingly jump, shifting to the other side of the glass. It let off a wave of happiness, then settled back down, at least for the time being. She shook her head, pouring a bit more water into the shot, since it was already half gone.

"I swear, you're a thirsty little thing, aren't you...?"

The leaf wriggled, causing the girl to chuckle softly.

"At least you're not lazy, I guess....

Accomplished today: Not much. Watched the leaf wiggle about.

A big package was placed in front of Jadaria's door as Lena coughed. "These things are getting heavy..." She said to herself still wondering about the leaves' developments. Would these leaves grow into children as well ? How quickly ?

The package contained a big orange flowerpot and a small handwritten letter.

A letter from Eden

Dear Jadaria,

We thought it was time to plant your leaf, so we all can wait for his development. This special flowerpot will be able to store the water better, so your plant is always in a wet condition. We hope you enjoy your planting time and we're all very excited about the possible outcome. Please notify us, if anything new occurs

~Lena

Written in a little blue book...

I bought a doll today. It's a really cute little thing - it's a chibi Hojo doll. It's so cute! I love it. I'm sure Kajika will too.

That's the big thing for today. I came home, and there was a box on my doorstep. Inside? A flowerpot! With dirt, no less. How odd is that? There was a note on it... Apparently it's specifically for my little leaf, so... I planted it.

I've decided the leaf (or whatever comes of it) will be called Kajika. Isn't that a cute name? I thought so too. I think I could live with it for a male or a female, too, though I kind of hope for a boy. Whatever the thing looks like.

I guess I finally accepted the fact that the leaf will turn into something.

Jadaria poked at the pot a couple of times, eyeing it cautiously. Could she really trust it? Maybe she shouldn't plant the leaf... what if it dried out in the dirt? What if something was wrong and it stopped moving?

The leaf wriggled in the shotglass, impatient for something. It seemed to reach toward the red container, making the girl laugh softly. She smiled, leaning over and petting it with one finger.

"Okay! I guess you must know what's good for you..."

Reaching into the dirt, she wriggled one finger about, digging a tiny hole. She then began to scoop around it, making a tiny pile on one side and an indentation on the other. After a while, she seemed satisfied.

"Do I bury you all the way...?"

The leaf shuddered and seemed to wilt.

"Okay, okay! Didn't think so. Come on, you." She picked it up, still kind of weirded out by the fact that the leaf was supposed to be alive... and it was, from the looks of things.

After thumbing it a moment affectionately, she set it into the dirt; she then began to scrape the soft, foamy material around, making a soft bed and planting about half of it. Her lips curled into a grin, finding the stuff to be quite amusing for some reason.

"Looks like you'll have a good bed... mmm... Here!" She fished into her pocket, suddenly, then pulled out a little statue. It was a chibi-doll, black hair, glasses, and a labcoat. It was a perfect, miniature replica of the character Hojo. Burying its feet into the dirt near the leaf, she giggled.

"I got you a buddy. Hope you like him."

With that, she pushed herself to her feet, fetching the watering can to soak the leaf's new home.

Accomplished today: Recieved the package with the pot of dirt. Planted the leaf in it. Also purchased a Hojo doll to guard the leaf.
