I'm a bit peeved right now because my director made it to Hell week before trying to find live musicians for Little Shop, and has managed to not find any that can be there all 6 nights. Instead, we are going to use the MIDI files sent to us for rehearsal and play them through the computer into the speakers of the theatre. Has anyone else done this before? Does anyone else agree that this royally sucks? (Not to mention the fact that I don't have a costume and we open on wednesday).

I actaully have rehearsed the songs to a MIDI file of the music before...i hated it...you couldnt tell what was really going on, and when your cue to start singing was...plus it sounded so fake!

Though I have never been in one, the theatre I work at has done a few "review" shows using karaoke tracks and I must say, thought it sounded okay, it was NOT worth the troubles of it. I worked lights on both and the sound person had SO many problems. You take a risk with pre-recorded tracks. They can skip, someone could hit the wrong button and the wrong song could come on, it could just refuse to plan. With a live pit, you know that they are gonna play when the conductor instructs them. You can't have that guarantee with recorded music.

Ugh...I saw a production of Joseph where they didn't use live music. The CD (or whatever they used) kept skipping! It was absolutely annoying.

Now that I've tried it out for 3 nights, it isn't too bad. Yet the lack or abundance of proper vamp time makes it so that you have to ad lib. Alot.

Wow. I can't imagine how much that must suck. Luckily I've never had to deal with it. We've always had at least piano accompaniment.

I had to put up with that when I was in Cinderella. The worst part was that we were also stuck with really shitty speakers, so we were actually singing louder than the music. It really sucked.

The actors had to do that for Fiddler on the Roof... someone had a laptop and some tiny crappy speakers and they attempted to play the music loud enough for everyone to hear, but those speakers were crap and it sounded horrible. Luckily though, we did have a pit...
But for Big we had a pianst who played the songs until we merged with the pit.

HA!!! me too!!! and it really sucked because they didn't have any monitors back stage so none of the actors could hear... let alone the singers... it was bad because i was a herald and a dancer for the majesties dance... so i had to guess... not to mention think WAY too hard about not falling off the stage because there was no room to dance... oh the bitter stories i could tell you about that show (but i won't) also, being overweight, i had to find my own costumes a lot... it stunk being in My Fair Lady and having to wear a knee length skirt because it was the only thing that i could fine in time

also... according to Music Theater International it is against the copyrights to use canned (not live) music during a performance... i tried to get permission to use canned music because the music and theater departments don't get along at my school and i got an e-mail back saying that if i tried it they would yank the rights

I think that's better than having a thirty piece orchestra when only twelve people are playing...and playing crappily, I might add. stare

They used a CD for this year's production of Bye Bye Birdie at my school. They even cast kids who sounded like the characters on the CD just so if they were singing too soft or whatnot, no one would notice. It was horrible since a few guys in the Telephone song sang so horribly off-beat, I was correcting them while watching it. >.>
Not to mention only one girl (the one who played Rose) could sing on-key. They girl we had playing Kim was trying to be a soprano when she was clearly an alto.
It's a shame they can't at least get the school bands in shape enough to play the music and all. I'd love to be a part of a musical orchestra.
