The Sonic OVA (Advertised by ADV as Sonic the Movie). I wonder where some of these ideas came from. Land of the Sky and Land of Darkness, A psychic connection between Sonic and Metal. Some interesting ideas, but I think it would have been better if they stuck to the source material. What do you think?

If anything, it could be longer....Course, this was an OVA, and two episodes in this case. Not only could it have helped flesh things out a little more, but it probably would've spared me the "That's IT?!" feeling after I first watched it. XP
Still, it's a nice little romp through a very different universe. I'd love to see one of the games dwell into the Land of the Sky/Darkness business, myself. Not to mention that it'll perhaps be THE only time we'll see a Sonic anime practically uncut and in English at the same time.
Sigh...now if I could just track down the dvd (sucks to have the VHS, but no VCR...).

Let's all remember that no matter what you didn't like about Sonic the movie, it could have been worse, it could have been along the lines of, oh, let's say the Super Mario Bros. movie.

Think maybe they could have filmed the storyline for one of the games instead?

Symos Think maybe they could have filmed the storyline for one of the games instead? Well, they sort of did...or vice versa. Depends on which one came out first.... It's pretty obvious that the animated opening and endings of Sonic CD were done by the same group that did the OVA. Heck, certain segments of the OVA seem to mimic it, even. Just not sure if it's intentional or not...

It was a weird little animation, granted, but Tails got to be who he is: an inventive genius. Plus the soundtrack rocks so much it's untrue. If only that would get released too...
On a somewhat off-topic note, anyone know whether Sega are repeating their tenth anniversary gimick and releasing a soundtrack to celebrate the 15th anniversary?

To be honest, I'd like to compare the OVA to whatever else was coming out of Japan for the target age group at the time. I agree that more length would've allowed for more development and that the tone seesawing between Robotnik as comic villainy and Metal as a genuine threat made it come over as uneven (don't even get me started on the squeaky catgirl... talk2hand ), but for all we know, it could still've been a perfectly decent example of what was being produced.

I kinda like the Sonic OVA. I borrowed it off of a friend of mione who recentally said I could have it. I would have truly enjoyed it if they didn't have Sera in it and that it was longer. Still, without Sera I wouldn't have gotten to see some of my favorite part in it.
For something of it's time, the animation wasn't half bad. At least the lip movements actually went with the words unlike Godzilla or something. The one time Metal talks kinda freaked me out for a day or two.
I too would love if they made a game out of it, but not to where it followed the exact same story-line as the OVA. I will admit that I did like the theme song for it, though.

Nuala Xagarath Ankor Which date/year was the time in question? 1999. Hmmm... Couple of years after Pokemon, similar sort of time that stuff like Digimon and Tenchi Muyo started migrating over here.

To be honest, I do believe Sonic the Movie as it was titled, came out around 1996, although it was re-released in 1999.

Xagarath Ankor I thought Sonic the Movie and the OVA were different? Nope. They're the same film - or, rather, two episodes of something compressed into a single film.
