Wait - what's this? An email from siroph@senate.gov? Hrm. Maybe he's got a good deal on Viagra. Let's open it and see.
siroph@senate.gov
Dear sir or madam,
If you have received this message, then you are a member of our armed forces or homeland police in good standing, and you have fulfilled certain other criteria which has brought your record to my attention.
First and foremost, I wish to thank you for your service to our nation. Your stalwart defense of our people, values, and way of life goes undersung every day. There are even those who would vilify your heroism based on uneducated biases. Yet you continue to stand proud, and I know I speak for the true patriots of Gaia when I offer my heartfelt gratitude.
While each man and woman who serves our nation within our military and police forces is a hero, there are some whose service is distinctive and inspiring. You are one of those latter few. In return for your dedication, I and my colleagues would like to offer you a position in a new department being created by order of the Senate Committee for Asset Management / Military, Police. You will receive a pay grade increase and have an exciting opportunity to work hands-on with the latest technologies in the defense of the Gaian way of life.
Please find attached a copy of our non-disclosure agreement. By printing this agreement and signing it, you assert that any information you receive about this new opportunity will remain between you and the Committee. Send the agreement to the indicated address. In a few days, you will receive your first glimpse into what we hope will be the career of your dreams!
Again, thank you for your service, and we here at the Senate hope to hear from you soon.
Sincerely,
Senator Seth Iroph
Co-chairman, SCAM/MP

Wow. Looks like somebody's about to crank up a new RP. Maybe I should post my interest here in the thread. I'll probably get PMed with further information.
So wait - he's not gonna sell me Viagra? scream

Department 5
Part SWAT team, part covert ops, part detective squad, but mostly free agents, Department 5 is a small unit with a wide scope and loose reins. In theory, they exist to fill in the grey area between GPD and GNG purview; in practice, they act as a watchdog agency to keep both sides honest... and they also wind up taking the jobs no one else wants. Since all D5 members are drawn from police or military service, they have expertise with those organizations' tactics and equipment; the D5 budget includes training to keep them up to date.
Origins
Department 5 is the brainchild of Senator R. S. Gainsborough and the committee she heads, the Senate Committee for Asset Management / Military, Police (SCAM/MP). The department's creation is the result of a compromise between Senator Gainsborough, an ardent cautionist and anti-military advocate, and her sparring partner within SCAM/MP, Senator Seth Iroph, an ex-GA man himself. The two often butt heads over what constitutes acceptability in military and police matters. D5 was seen as a way for the committee to actively take part in that process. Of course, in actuality, the department is largely forgotten now that it has been created; as far as the legislators are concerned, its purpose is served just as well on paper as in the flesh.
The department is accountable only to SCAM/MP; there are no official liaisons or connections to the GPD or the GNG. The department is mostly self-directed, but occasional political machinations result in orders from on high.
What's in it for me?
- A more character-driven RP environment than other branches of the GNG generally provide. D5 has an emphasis on investigation, which means lots of plot-driven interaction. There's plenty of tech-heavy action to be had, but your character's personality and history are going to be more important than his or her cybernetic pelvic action. And a small unit means more focus on you, rather than the feeling of being lost in a sea of unnamed NPCs.
The latest tech in your hands - it's not just part of the environment or the automatic defense system. You decide what to use and when. You collaborate to design the upgrades based on your own field tests. D5 uses tech inspired primarily by the preexisting GNG environment, as well as Shirow Masamune's Ghost in the Shell and the derivatives thereof.
A broad range of self-directed RP venues. For every taste in RP, there's a plot to develop. D5 deals in both short, standalone situations and long-term antagonistic drama - if you want to unearth a deep conspiracy that envelops the entire GNG, that's wonderful; but if your yen is for a quick chase scene with lots of shooting and jumping around, you're not stuck on your stakeout of Delacroix's offices. razz
... A cookie. Not a real one. You probably wouldn't eat it anyway. I'm not good with cookies. But I'll see what I can do.
D5 is where the Antag system will truly shine. Since this is an enormously individual-directed RP, the action points will actually matter. Points will be assigned the moment the RP goes live. Be forewarned: the opposition will use their points, even if you don't use yours. wink
We hope to fill between six and ten slots. Each member of D5 is a specialist. Areas of specialty may certainly overlap; there's every reason to have more than one infiltration specialist, for example, and no two people go about the same job in exactly the same way (unless one is a total copycat razz ). The following specialists have already applied:
Stealth infiltration and information gathering
Research and data analysis
Demolitions and hand-to-hand combat
Public face, interview investigation
