Anyone notice how people who don't know the name of the next gen consoles usually name it "Current System" 2? After looking over my notes...no system has done that except for the Playstation. Co Inky Dink? Since when did the Sony fans get to name the next-gen systems?

Well, I'm going to disagree on that.

Most of the time, it is because of the problem that we call "unoriginality".

I think Sony just doesn't change their name 'cause of the 'famous' name.
But many people believe if something comes after whats its updating...it has to have a number at the end. Remember before the new Zelda was shown last year people where calling it "Wind Waker 2" even if it didnt came after WW in time or anything.
But Sony...seems like they want to be like Square and their FF series...

Well this way people don't go aorund not knowing what thier next system is. By naming thier systems Playstation 2, and 3, and wahtever, its a name people are familiar with, and therefor it will sell better.

When the Plaqystation 3 is out, people will go into stores, and they will be like "Hey! A playstation 3! I got the second one! I've gotta buy it!"

while as, with the REvolution, people won't know it that much. They'll only notice it for the person who made it.

Playstation is recognized as a great system, and by keeping that name, people will recognize any future systems as great systems, and something they recognize.

The same thing goes for the Gameboy. They originally called it GB, which they then changed to GBP (pocket), which then became GBC (color), then GBA (advance), then GBASP (advance SP). Some people were a little confused when they heard Nintendo DS last year though, because its a portable that isn't called Gameboy, though people who recognize the creator should know that its good if they like the GBA/GBASP). Nintendo is kinda doing this with their consoles though, because they are merely changing what they system is called, and keeping Nintendo before it (Nintendo 64, Nintendo Gamecube, Nintendo Revolutions).

The thing is, Microsoft is making X-box 2. For the people that don't like X-box, that's a clear Stay Away sign. All I can hope is that since X-box 2 is supposed to come out a year earlier than PS3/Revolution (I haven't looked it up, but my friend says EGM claims it will come out near the end of this year) it ends up failing like Dreamcast and Microsoft becomes a third party company like Sega (Except Sega doesn't suck).

I doubt Microsoft will fall into the same fate as Dreamcast did. Why? It's getting a lot of hype. It's getting tons of good games and WAY more support. And It's a name people know. There are so many people that love Xbox, so they'll get it again.

This is just giving them an advantage. THe same one Sony had on Nintendo and Microsoft this time aorund.

I severely doubt the next XBox will be XBox 2... How would that look next to Playstation 3?

Well, at least Nintendo didn't go with the code name "Dolphin" this time around.

Sony loves the media, and the media always listens to Sony(idiots stare )

They could always Name the PS3 the "Master of all who encounters Thee" But I don't think that'd easily fit on the box.

second xbox is xbox two. microsoft doesn't want to experiment. Also you have to remember, Nintendo is the only one dedicated to games and games only. If Sony or Microsoft didn't keep the name people might think its some kind of other product, meaning lots of money spent on marketing to inform the public.

Its getting the least number of games and the least amount of support. Microsoft is in a panic, which is why they are pushing for an early release. The reason they panic is because they are losing the few third party companies that they had, and its only Nintendo (and there used to be Sega) who could stand on their own two feet without third party companies. Many people will buy the Xbox, because they will probably just release another Halo or something similar, but the only reason it'll sell is because it'll be the only next-gen. system out at that time.

It will eventually suffer a worse fate than Dreamcast (it won't be a system that everyone loved and were sad to see it go). Did I say it wouldn't sell? No. Of course it will sell. The main profit for systems like PSP and X-box 2 are people who are either complete idiots or don't know what they are getting into. One guy I know who bought a PSP recently traded it in when I showed him there will be almost no RPGs (Untold Legends, Tales of Eternia, and FF7 Crisis Core is it) and has mostly sports games (he already has a CD player and DVD player, so media features were useless). One other guy I know who got a PSP also doesn't know the difference between Pokemon and Final Fantasy (or any other RPG for that matter).

And the reason Sony made the PS2 isn't because it was neccesarily famous. Sony makes so many other products that if they made a new name, they wouldn't know what it does. The call it Playstation 2/3 to show that its just the more advanced version of the previous console. Microsoft is just following the example because they think calling it PS2 made it sell more.
