What do you think are the pros and cons to these?

^^; I can think of some being born into the religion. Sometimes I feel that I don't appreciate being born a Buddhist. I have never had to really, truely, struggle in life. So I can't always relate to my mom, who found and converted to this religion. But, I've noticed that my views on life and what is important as to what is not, differs from a lot of my friends and even family members, those who are not Buddhist. 3nodding

"There are as many paths to enlightenment as there are people"

If you're born into the religion, that is fine, as long as you agree with the religion. If your path differs from the religion you were born into, then you will have to find the path you are most comfortable with.

If you are not born into a religion, you can make up your own mind. if you are born into one, there is the possibility of being forced into one you are not comfortable with, which is a bad thing.

In my mind, it works better to convert. For one, if you choose to change your religion, you definitely know it's the right one for you. Whereas if you're born into it, maybe you'll never fully appreciate it. Of course, if a religion matches your beliefs, it matches your beliefs. Period. So if you're born into the right religion, then that's great.

Either way, I feel a proper investigation of things should be made - look into other faiths, and see what resonates best with your own beliefs. Then be what you are with your whole heart. 3nodding

I honestly can't think of any pros or cons. Simply because, if we're all reborn until we attain Enlightenment, then it doesn't really matter if you're born into Buddhism, or you find it.

I don't think this is Buddhism-specific, Rin, just a question of if being born into a religion is better than finding one for yourself. That is a good point, however. 3nodding

I suppose, if you're born into the religion which best suits you, then you're not really given the chance to immerse yourself in other religions in the path to finding one that suits you. Which isn't entirely true, because Buddhists can also practice other religions in addition to the Buddhadharma.

Inversely, if you're born into no religion, or a religion that does not suit you, you are given the chance to experience other faiths and practices as you search for your path. Even if it ends up being a path which is of your own creation.

Well why are you having second thoughts? From what I understand (My two best friends are Pagan/wiccan) Wicca and Paganism are very flexible relgions. So it's not like you have to believe strictly in one thing?

I believe that a person should not just stay in a certain religious "group" because they were born into it. That person should study and use their judgement to find the religion/beliefs that are "right" for them.

I was left to find my own religion but I was of corse influenced by my parents christainity. I was christain for awhile (not a very good one mind you.. I picked and chose because I dident agree with some things. Im a science person.) but I lost what little faith I had to evolution and I have been athiest for the past 3 years. However recently I have started to explore many other religions, finding differnt ways.
I have always been open to others beleifs but I have never found one to suit me though I find many interesting or even very respectable. Buddhism I find highly respectable and I am starting to apply some of the teachings to my life. I dont think this makes me Buddhist and I dont know if this means I am finding a new way of life but only time holds the answer for that.

Hm, I think finding it is usually better. Because then it's like it's your own, all yours, and it wasn't stuffed down your throat since birth. sweatdrop Just my opinion though. *Points to Michiko* You've been watching HiHi Puffy AmiYumi. blaugh Anyway..I have a question, and because I didn't want to start a different topic sweatdrop I'm naturally a very, very passionate person when it comes to...well...everything. But it seems to me that Buddhists don't like that, and think one should be more laid back. Is it bad to be passionate? sweatdrop

As a person who was born Christian and followed her own path, I believe that it's better to find your own path rather then just listen to what every one else says to believe in.

only you can decide. to me, there is no right or wrong religeon. My grandfather said it best. "What matters is not what the statement says, only why it saying it." Cheer up... the right path,YOUR path, will come to you. Just be open minded, worked for me. biggrin

theres nothing more i can agree with. Its seems when im in my church being called apon as a "son of god", i find it interesting that christainanity has roots in judahism, and judahism has roots in budhhism. Religion is ones personal choice no matter what.
