This may be a little off-topic for the guitarist forum, but i think most of us can relate to it some how. I just saw the most ignorant topic about music i have ever seen in my life. On the DeviantArt boards, some yahoo was questioning whether "rock" is music or not.

Oh yea? Thats not quite as sad (or ignorant) as this statement I had the misfortune of hearing.
A friend and I were talking about Pink Floyd. A girl (who likes rap, I figured that was worth mentioning. It is also worth noting that most of the kids at my school listen to nu-metal, pop-punk, or rap. Then there are the "Ultra-Cool" kids thatt listen to REAL metal and REAL punk. I'm sure most high schools are like that because of the media, but anyway, back to the story)
So yes, a girl over heard a conversation and said, "I don't like rock, they are all jumping up and down and screaming." She said this about Pink Floyd.
Hmm, there was a little more to the story than that, but thats all I can remember and thats the main idea of it anyway.

Most people at my school listen to a PR breed of hip hop, its kinda like spanish+ hip hop, over a crappy simplistic beat and lyrics. People who listen to anything rock, whether its Punk ( pop Punk), Metal or nu-metal, they are all considered loosers.

I have a small school, so we all pretty much dislike eachother's music equally. Until I mention that Green Day is bad music. Then the majority gets upset with me.
But really, Pink Floyd, jumping up and down rock? That's rich.

Although I'm pretty sure rap is a predominantly crotch grabbing sport. I think she may have associated Pink Floyd as "another band with guitars" and thus probably threw them in the same category as blink-182. Unless I'm mistaken, the rap/spanish hybrid is a (new?) genre called Reggaetone or something.

I just hate when people generalize and put bands/people like Chuck Berry, Ozzy Osbourne, Linkin Park, and say, Good Charlotte all in one group. THEN say that none of them are actual music. Let alone trying to blame it on the lyrics, when the majority of the music in the world doesnt even HAVE lyrics!

Those are totally different from each other to the ears of anyone with the slightest clue what the hell they're talking about.

People these days just seem to be really ignorant about music in general. I blame MTV and the radio. They act like sheep, not liking something because it sounds good or is interesting, but because it's "cool". Of course what is "cool" now will be completely stupid in 15 years (just look at what was "cool" in the 70's and 80's). So basically people think stuff that used to be popular is stupid now and somehow they fake themselves into believing they have good taste in music and what they like will be cool forever. Arrgh, that was a bit of a lengthy rant, but I could go on all day haha.

I could rant a little on that, but most of my anger towards that general sort of thing is directed towards Hot Topic. Hot Topic - the folks who made being not preppy a preppy thing to do.

I can't really comment intelligently on this, because I can't get my head around the idea of rock music having "crappy lyrics".
That is one of the best things about rock - the lyrics. I don't mean to generalize and be as much of an arse as the people we're complaining about, but most of the rap/R&B/D&B/hip-hop that I've ever heard seems to be some ugly bloke saying: "yeh, everybody loves me, cause I'm so rich, yeh, everyone wants to shag me, cause I'm so rich" and some cosmetically enhanced dumb-as-a-post bint occasionally going: "oooh" in the background. As for dance music, it all seems to think it's about love, when it's really nothing more than a series of cinematic images: long golden hair, a perfect kiss - THAT'S NOT LOVE, IT'S LIBEDO!
Lyrically, rock music seems to be one of the most intelligent modern styles there is. There is always a rock song that represents exactly how I feel - Travis "Why Does it Always Rain on me", Sex Pistols "Pretty Vancant", hell, even Jilted John "Gordon is a Moron"!
Sorry, I'm getting carried away here - but if rock music does have a negative quality, then it's definately not the lyrics. I'm not sure what it is - I haven't found it yet.
