This may sound mildly retarded, but what exactly is purling? What is it for? I keep seeing the word, but I dont understand it. All I know is knitting squares and whatnot, so purling sounds like a need-to-know type of thing. eek

All I know is knitting squares and whatnot, so purling sounds like a need-to-know type of thing. eek Purling is a reverse knit stitch. While a knitted stitch forms a V, a purl stitch is a bar. You use purling and knitting to create textures in fabric.
If you knit every row, you get garter stitch like this
If you knit a row, then purl the next row, you get stockinette stitch like this
If you mix the two stitches on a given row, you can create ribbing and patterns. That help any?
