Ok, I seem to be having a rather large problem with popups here at work. Every time I start bumping the quest threads, I get hundreds of popups flying all over my screen. This is the main reason I haven't been bumping the quest thread as I don't normally have time in the evenings at home. I don't have control of what I can put on this computer here at work. Is there something I can do to prevent this without having to download a program that my computer tech will kill me for downloading? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What browser are you using, Rue? Some have popup blockers available as options which can be enabled, others may require third-party popup blocker software to be downloaded. It also may be spyware that's gotten installed on the computer, so running a scan may help (ad-aware, spybot search and destroy, microsoft antispyware).

Unfortunately, tasks like these are those I've delegated to DH, the persisting resident geek, and I'd have to check with him or do some additional research on my own to help you more... which I'll do, btw... but perhaps you'll get some other suggestions as well. Good luck!! heart

IE is the only browser I have here at work. Any help is certainly appreciated.

The newest version of IE (7)? It's still in beta2, but the download link (for Windows XP) is here: Internet Explorer 7

or, a supplemental program for IE, called Windows Defender rolleyes , here: Windows Defender

I can't imagine that your tech guys would have an issue with either of these, but I don't know the protocol at your office for such things...

I can't do the first one since I don't have Windows XP here. I am going to attempt the other. We shall see what happens.

There is probably a link to IE downloads for other versions of Windows if you look around the Microsoft site... or, as your tech guy... 'cuz now that I think of it, Microsoft may be trying to phase out older versions of windows...? I can't recall at the moment. sad

Good luck!!!

my main browser is IE...and i dont have pop ups coming up...to me it sounds like spyware that has been put on your computer....any computer should have something to help with popup...come to think of it...even the yahoo toolbar has a pop up blocker...you might could try installing that...but if it is spyware..it would be best to use soemthing to find out..so it can eliminate the problem... 3nodding

I'm not allowed to install the yahoo toolbar here at work. I tried to install the Windows Defender and I can't because it requires another update that I can't get installed. No idea what that's about but I did run a spyware program so we will see what that does.

thats odd rue...I dont get popups on here **thank God!** But I get pummelled with them on neo when I go to my nonpremie account. I hate it.

I get no popups on any other site at all and no where else on here except for the quest threads. I will be leaving work in a 1/2 hour for the day and have some errands to run and won't be home til later this evening. I guess I will just try and attempt to bump them in the evenings.

[rant]speaking of neo...its one thing to have them at top...but i dont have them even not being premie...and another to have them at bottom...which i never see cause i dont scroll down that far...but..the past couple of days i have been getting them popping up in the middle of the page...like it is part of the page until you click the little close part of the pic...now that is just aggravating scream stressed [/rant]

sorry..had to let it out... sweatdrop

That's true butterfly, I have been getting a verizon popup while in the junior's account the past couple days. I had forgotten about that.

Anyway, I have run Ad-Aware and have deleted my cookies and temp files. Hopefully that helps. I have 191 adware to delete so that may be the problem. I sure hope so.

wow Ad-Adware......I should run that, I havent done so in quite awhile. I shudder to think how much I have on here gonk

It's always a good idea to run antivirus and antispyware programs regularly (at least once a week), and even to run more than one of each type (they may catch something the other one didn't). As far as these toolbars go, they do advertise popup blockers and such as part of their "benefit", but they are really just another guise for spyware ... so be wary about installing those things.

Neo is bombarding me lately with popups (I'm no longer premium)... top, bottom, sides, middle, *and* new windows... and it's *annoying*!! I also had a problem with one ad that would load and then promptly crash my browser. I NMed TNT about it and have heard nothing back, but also haven't had it happen since the NM went out. I utterly despise the mostly transparent ads that load in the middle of the page and make you search for the "close" button...

Rue, I'm sorry you're having problems loading the new software I suggested. Hopefully the antispyware and antivirus programs that you *can* run will help. I'd consider talking to the tech guy about upgrading browsers / operating systems (Windows) to help you battle these nuisances... As always, best of luck!

(OT, sort of) Anyone considering IE 7 download might be interested in knowing that secure sites like my bank (Wells Fargo) will not let me access account info from IE 7. Probably will not matter to most people, but if I have saved even one person the hassle of fnding that out the hard way, I think it was worth mentioning. And I *guess* I am glad my bank is that careful... rolleyes
