Agreed- cool article!
I think the family deserved it 3nodding
A question for discussion: (but also a warning before this begins- I know this is highly controversial, so.....no letting this get out of hand. sweatdrop )
Do you agree with affirmative action? (aka favoring certain people/groups who have been treated poorly in the past. An example is letting an African American into a college when he is less qualified then a white counterpart)

People shouldnt always have a free ride for something that happened to people they did even know

I agree with knight. It's kinda annoying when someone takes a backride for something that happened 435 years ago, and he was his great great great great grand pa from his ex-wifes son's mother in law's side.
Okay, seriously now, I think it's really a good thing, but there is a limit to everything, and I think its okay that they get compensation and stuff, but it can only go so far...

xd It turns out, I kind of agree with all of you.
I don't really see the reasoning behind it, though. Yes, people were treated badly, but it's not as though giving them money makes it any better. Sure, it makes them richer, but half the time, the family doesn't even know the ones wronged!
I don't really have anything else creative or new to add, so I'll wait until after I get some sleep xp

something else that bothers me is that my friend turns out had a very distant and far off relative who had slaves and the slaves ancestors sued his family and they had to pay thos money, even though they never knew about this relative and it was so distant that it made no sense to them

Affirmative action is a sore subject to me. The government should make an effort to treat everyone equally. Race shouldn't matter when you're applying to college. Perhaps scholarships and things like that, I'm okay with, but schools, companies? And who wants to be the one black man/woman who is less qualified but got in because of quotas?
And honestly, I believe it was necessary at one point. But now, the problems should be addressed much earlier. Maybe if we improved our schools, we would be turning out more qualified students.
I only have my experience with Long Island to go by here, but in some towns the schools are excellent. With some of the highest numbers of kids going into AP and scoring high on standardized tests. Move to the next town over, and you have districts that are severely behind, chock-full of embezzling unscrupulous bureaucrats.
Not that I have any real solution, except that I think that the schools should be standardized on a national level instead of leaving it up to the states, and perhaps we could afford to divert a larger percentage of our GDP to education.
..Never gonna happen, though. xp

This upsets me.

I support people going to college, but cmon, if you dont even try...whats the real point?

Some drop out, but get their GED, which is really just as good, and they take the SATs and suchlike. I don't see a problem with that. And really, all they want is your money.

I go to a state school. Perhaps my opinion is a bit screwy. I've never heard of people getting in without any kind of GED. Unless it's really late in life. That I can kind of understand.
