Lyric, at the moment, was in charge of ferrying the female souls across the river. She hovered a few inches off the ground as she considered the influx of souls as of late. Trouble was brewing in the outside world, she normally wouldn't get involved but special circumstances brook unusual actions.
She owed a life debt to Mara and Naomi, the prophetic twins who had predicted someone trying to brew a potion of imortality. At the time it the powers that be had been on 'vacation' and had left her in charge. Only they new why she had been selected for the task since she was only a ferrier and thus not very high in rank on the other side. Anyway, some loony was trying to brew a forbidden potion to make herself immortal. If she succeeded then it wouldn't look good on Lyric's record, 'Had no control over things when asked to sub for Them.' or something along those lines would be on a little post-it on her permanent record.
The twins had given her a heads up and helped her kill the b***h so now she owed them...quite a bit really, she was immortal after all and her permanent record was truely Permanent.
Another blip appeared on her map, it was time to do her job once again...

Some t**t named Kirel was her latest job...silly little thing refused to leave her body. It was quite a job to get her to leave but she did eventually follow the lure of Lyric's 'Song of The Reaper'. Once she returned to her post near the River, she set up for a rather boring afternoon.

Asuka Stood at the border between life and death, As always she was a bit hesitant to venture into that cold dark world, especially sinse the only protection her body had was the few wards she placed around her for common dangers. Any necromancer of higher rank could break through these easily, and she would all to soon be ushered across the river. But, alas, this was her job, and it had to be done. She took a breath, and pursed her lips, the low, steady whistle breaking the cocoon of silence, and hurtling her through deaths gates. Her body going limp. Once in death she drew her blade Night Wish, and glanced around, but none of the spirits seemed very interested in her, they all traipsed toward the river mechanically, towards whatever awaited them beyond. (weak entrance I know, but give me a couple minutes Im rusty.)

A different kind of blip appeared on the screen this time...a kind that Lyric hated dealing with. Another bloody Necromancer had come into her section of the River. Lyric sighed and ghosted over to where she needed to be to teleport. 'Twould be a rather long day, she was sure of it now. The Necromancer was moving now so she would have to hurry...she teleported to the first location of entry and then quickly followed in the path of the intruder...

The hairs on the back of her neck tingled. She raised Night Wish, and automatically took up a defensive stance. and whispered "an'yil", which sent curling flames of darkness up the edge of her blade. If it was a weaker spirit, she could handle it easy enough, but a lot of higher ranking spirits ghosted along the border craving life, and attacking the more inexperienced necromancers. The very thought made her quiver. She, had been unfortunate enough to encounter one of these biengs on her first trip to death. She had barely escaped with her life, and had no wish to repeat the experience, but running would only leave her open to attack.

She continued to stalk the Necromancer even though she knew they had stopped and were probably setting up some sort of ambush. She could now see the Necromancer in the distance. It was apparently a she and she held a flaming blade. 'Great, one of those 'experienced' ones...' She grumbled to herself.
She drew out her flute and readied it to play. Drawing ever nearer to the Necromancer, she prepared to raise it to her lips.

After a few minutes she was able to vaguely make out the outline of her pursuer. It didn't really look like any of the spirits she encountered, the shape was much more human, which lead her to believe that she was facing another necromancer, or something of the sort. The prospect wasn't appealing.

Since the banks of the River were essentially bare, there was no place to disappear to, no where to hide in other words. Now Lyric wasn't one to really on hiding places, but the did come in handy. The Necromancer hadn't moved since she'd come into Lyric's view so she took her earlier assumption as the correct one. The twit must be setting a trap or something...
"Who are you and why have you invaded the banks of the River?"
She had finally reached her target...

The woman's voice startled Asuka, but she continued to glare at her. "I could ask you the same questions, Why have you been following me? What is it you want?" She began to edge sideways. If all went wrong then she would run for all she was worth back to the border. She had learned a spell for binding a couple of years ago, but she didn't trust her memory, she hadn't studied magic for quite some time, and spells tended to turn on the caster. If he or she wasn't in complete control, the results could be disasterous. Plus she wasn't entirely sure if magic worked in death...

"What am I doing here?" She began incredulously, "I'm protecting my section of the River from filthy Necromancers like YOU. I'm a Soul Piper/Ferrier, it's my job to play souls to their rest and then KEEP them there." Lyric had a bad experience with a Necromancer a few years back...the b*****d said he was just doing what some demon had told him to...heh, fat chance. She'd shown him no mercy and taken his soul across the River.

Realizing the pipers' mistake, she shook her head, and stared at her increduously. "Me? A necromancer?" She sighed, and sheithed Night Wish. " No, Its my job to unravel their work. My magic is the same, but used for different reasons. I loathe Necromancers, and their weak, foolish ploys for power. Any village idiot can see, that a demon isn't going to keep a deal if it can kill you instead. I have unfortunatly been charged with cleaning up after their idiotic schemes. Thats the worst part anyways. I usually try to catch them before they tear up the countryside." She brushed a stray hair out of her eyes angrily. I came to try and find a soul from the murders in Esperanza. I want to question her and see if she can tell me of her murderer. I've also heard rumors that the prophetic twins, Mara and Naomi, have seen something, and I wanted to see if someone could tell me what they've foretold."

"I'm afraid it's too late to speak with Kirel, she's just moved on." She replied.
Looking at the woman up close, Lyric was rather abashed that she had mistaken her for a necromancer. She was obviously a member of that group...or at least a follower of some sort. (Nyah, we must discuss this...)
"I'm sad to say however, that there will probably be more where that came from. In fact, I think they are coming now." She glanced pointedly at about three transparent figures moving towards them. They were close enough that you could see that all three were obviously female, and young.
"Excuse me for a moment." She bowed to the woman and proceeded over to the souls that had stopped a few feet away.
-----
"Hello, I am Lyric the Soul Piper. I am here to help you move on from your deaths. I'm pleased to say that it looks like you willingly left your bodies. You must not have been as brutally murdered as the others."
The three hesitated for a moment, none of them willing to talk after what they must have just experienced. One of them however, stepped forward and began to speak.
"I don't know about any other deaths, but I remember a woman with dark hair and green eyes. She strangled me in my sleep about six days ago. Right before I blacked out...I heard her call herself something...I can't...quite remember...everything has been getting fuzzy you see."
Lyric nodded her understanding. It was normal for souls to go through a period where they forgot certain things, especially if they were directly related to their death.
"Give it time, it'll come back. In the meantime, what's your name?"
"My name...my...name. Hmm...I think, it's Al...icia."

Her brow furrowed as she watched Lyric confer with the spirit maidens. Bits of the conversation srifted to her ears, without word, she stepped up to Alicia, and gently examined her neck. A light tingling traveled up her elbows. Strange.... She was lucky to have caught these three now, while it was still possible to discern their features. A body is like a container for the spirit, The spirit will hold that shape for only so long after shedding its body. It turns into.. A sort of whirlwind of light and color. already these three were getting a little fuzzy around the edges. She moved among the spirits curiously, prodding the spirit-flesh, with experienced hands. She still marveled at the feel of it.. Like a bubble filled with water... She straightened finally, and looked at lyric, her brow furrowed. "There is not a mark on any of them." She pointed at Alicia " She was strangled, the handprints should have held for a few minutes into death. There's nothing there. They're like newborn babes." She had noticed something during her examinations, A light, barely noticeable thread of light bled from each woman and spun off back towards the veil that seperated the living form the dead. "Someone has a hold on these spirits. Before you play them across I suggest we find A way to sever their hold on these girls."

With a start she realized the woman was right. There was an odd discoloration in the spirits that shouldn't be there. It looked as if it was eating away at them slowly...
"I don't know what it could be, but I'll bet Kirel had one too. It looks like it is eating away at their spirits. I don't know how to get rid of it, usually just traveling past the first gate will remove any impurities from spirits. The marks of death will still be there, but any sort of spell will be stripped..." She trailed off.
If there was a being strong enough to cast something like this into the spirit realm, she shuddered to think what it could mean for the real world.
"I'll put these three into quarenteen. We haven't had to use it for several centuries, but it should still be in working order. I think it's time to go pay a visit to a certain pair of girls in the living world..."

She smiled knowingly, " Im sure Mara and Naomi will welcome us with open arms," She remarked offhandedly, Her voice thick with sarcasm. Mara, and Naomi, or the Prophetic twins were infamous for their love of solitude. Consequently they weren't very well known among your every day human, she herself hadn't seen them in decades. "How do you propose we find them? I haven't seen them in years." She watched the three woman warily, her gaze shifted to the twirling thread, "I don't know if they have enough time, we should try and sever this cord. Browsing through her pockets she brought out a silver dagger, and knelt as if to saw at it. Before her hand even came close, An electric jolt ran up her arm, her mouth opened in a silent scream. The pangs ended as abrubtly as they started, she massaged her shoulder, "Bad idea..." She muttered darkly.
