I just read something in MegaTokyo (my favorite manga) today about how the Japanese think that Americans are "well-armed and will whip out guns at the slightest provocation." What is with that stereotype?! domokun

probably because compared to Japan and many other industrialized countires our gun violence rate is pretty astronomical. But we love our guns, it's written in the constitution.

Japan probably only hears about the most heinous crimes on the news, like school shootings and Scott Peterson trials and such. When I watch the news it seems like all the happens are bad accidents and shooting but that's not true, its just how sensetionalized the news is.

Although you may never know it, Japanese have a lot of strange views of Gaijin in their country.

Things you'd never think of!

I stumbled upon this site while surfing through gaijinpot.com. This site is made by an American who became a citizen of Japan. He's working at a university in Hokkaido and I guess has written some books on Japan. What I find interesting is his gallery of PLACES THAT DISCRIMINATE AND DO NOT LET IN GAIJIN.

Also brought to light is a government-made "snitch" site: basically any Japanese person can REPORT a gaijin for NO REASON at all. Although many human rites agencies protested the site and the government toned it down (now you can report a gaijin.. if they do a crime or are suspicious of performing a crime), but it's still there.

It seems like the most predigious of all Japanese are the police themselves. Most of the cops I`ve seen are pretty old to be cops, and they just sit in their koban all day. My husband also commented that they do not speak keigo or any other formal language to normal people, which is awfully rude-sounding in Japanese terms.

There's a lot of bad stuff here that people just don't know or see everyday. But it's there and it's sad. Japan is still very backwards.

Yeah, I hate how our media always focuses on crimes and stuff, and I hate how they always blow these things way out of proportion. It tends to make people in other countries think we are bad people when we really aren't. I've always believed that most people are really good at heart, but some people just do not choose to show it. 3nodding

Well, you do know we do the same thing in America, right? If it's not tragic, we don't focus on it. I mean, no one would give a rats a** about Iraq if there was peace and prosperity. As a society, we thrive on bad things happening to make our lives seem better. Every country does that because it makes their society feel better off.

what's a gaijin?
It means "outside person." (gai=outside, jin=person, people) so, a term for foreigners. I've been told it has a somewhat negative meaning, but I don't know since I haven;t been to Japan yet. Anyone whose been there, would you say it's a negative term?

I've also heard that they think we swear 24/7.

My classmates and I usually always refer to ourselves as gaijin. But if you hear a Japanese person saying it, it's rude towards a foreigner. What you should be hearing is gaikokujin or gaikoku no kata...

gaijin tends to show the image of white foreigner whereas gaikokujin tends to be used for non-white foreigners. maybe that's just ideosyncratic, but that's the tendency that's expressing itself here.

i know nothing.

That site is very interesting, and a little sad. I was at first surprized to see Japan has no racial discrimination laws on the books, then I remember that only .6% of the population is not considered ethnically Japanese, so I guess there just isn't *enough* discrimination against *enough* people for it to be a big issue. I feels for the webmasters two children, they're half white live in Hokkaido, they've probably experianced a bit of discrimination.

My friend whose studying abroad in the Kansai area this fall may run into some trouble due to his tattoos. He has several, so most likely no bath-houses for him. I knew I resisted getting any tattoos for a reason! So I can go into a Japanese bathhouse, that is if they don't refuse entry to me for my gaijin-ness. biggrin

Doesn't it suck that they will refuse gaijin? I think it sucks. That is just freakin' discrimination! I can understan the tattoo thing, but GAIJIN?! *runs around with a picket sign saying "Bath houses for Gaijin!*
