Kayne just couldn't understand what the hell had happened the day before in the cafeteria. The whole scene had played non-stop over and over again in his head. He felt awful for hitting Jess in the nose. But she had seemed like she would rather him have hit her instead of that little p***k. Hopping up the stairs, he made sure no one was in the hallway before he walked down to Jess's door. Knocking quietly, he held his free hand behind his back.

Jess had been lying in bed, making the most of her first day off. She had manage to get two from her faculty advisors. It was pretty painful and she didn't feel like venturing anywhere in public with her bruised and swollen nose.

She was watching her lunchtime hospital drama and eating some chocolate that Chiyo had brought her up. Although it was highly relaxing she couldn't help but worry about the psychos who were still wandering campus.

At the knock on the door she crawled to the end of the bed and called out. "Come in! Shut the door behind you!" And crawled back into bed. Best to do the full wounded soldier act incase it was one of her superiors.

Kayne glanced over his shoulder once more and slipped in at her call. He shut the door and locked it behind him and walked through to her bedroom.

"There's the silly eejit who stepped in front of my fist," he smiled, teasingly, keeping his hand behind his back. She looked quite pathetic, he thought, and the sight of her nose made him feel so much worse for his actions. Walking over to her he leaned down and kissed her forehead lightly, pulling his hand out from behind his back to hand her a rose.

"How are you feeling?" he asked, sitting down next to her on the bed.

Jess blinked as she heard Kayne's warm Irish tones came from the other room. She smirked a little at his words and shook her head.
"And there's the hot head that got me dragged into the mess in the first place."

Jess shifted as he sat down and lay her head in his lap, looking up at him.
"Like shyte as you might say." She said taking his hand in hers and entwining her fingers through his. "Got two days off work though." She said with a smirk.

"Well... then you should be thanking me," he grinned down at her. He ran his free hand through her tangled curls and his grin faded.

"I'm really sorry about that. About all of it. You should have just let me hit the b*****d. He had no right saying the things he said," he said a bit darkly.

Jess looked up at him and sighed.
"No he didn't. But I'm not about to let you get slashed up. Love-lackys are hard to come by in this place." She joked, knowing it would do little to appease him. "Seriously Kayne I've delt with the older version of that kind before. If you had hurt him badly, his nut job of a friend would come hunting."

She smiled weakly and squeezed his hand. My main concern was for your safety, not for justice.

Kayne smiled a bit at her joke, but frowned when she mentioned she had dealt with adults just as unhinged as the freak he had run into.

"So you don't think I can handle myself? You think because you've got some training that I need you to step in and fight my battles for me?" he asked, a small flame of temper starting to rise.

"I don't care who his bloody friend is," he said. "What they did to Ra... could have done to Ra, hell anybody for that matter, deserves retribution. If slugging the smug bugger is what would have drawn out the psycho, then it would have been worth it," he finished, his hand tight around hers.

At his words Jess sat up and glared at him.
"Shut the ******** up Kayne." She said angrily. "Yeah I do think you needed me to step in. You know why? Because you don't think." She took his hand from his and sat cross legged.

"People like this boy don't just come out, they pick off the weak. They would get to you in subtle ways, ways you wouldn't notice until bam, one day you are the only one left standing."

She pulled her knees up to her chest defensively and glared at him. "They need stopping, but I don't want you trying your hand at it. Do you hear me?"

Kayne was only slightly surprised by her words and actions, but he was too angry, frustrated, and scared to pay much attention. Rising to his feet he paced away, putting his back towards her and tried to take a deep breath. He put out a hand and leaned against the wall for a moment, running a hand through his rusty hair as he forced himself to calm down. This was not exactly how he had envisioned coming to check on her. Pushing himself away from the wall he turned back to face her and slipped his hands into his pockets.

"I don't... understand what the bloody problem is," he said slowly, trying to keep a leash on his temper.

"The bloody problem Kayne, is that I do not want you hurt, or worse." She frowned and watched him as he tried to control his temper. "Can't you see that?"

She stayed sitting and looked up to him, trying to catch his eyes. "When you're angry you do not think, you make rash decisions. When dealing with knife weilding psychos a rash decision could cost you your life or that of one of your friends."

She paused to stand up off the bed.
"And don't you dare mock my training again okay, ever."

Kayne held her eyes as she rose from the bed and he looked down at her until her final words. He looked away, clenching his teeth. He understood what she was telling him, but it didn't help to shift the mood that had settled over him. He took another deep breath and let it out before turning back to look down at her again.

"Fine," he said simply.

Jess bit her lip and looked at him. She had a bad enough headache as it was, she didn't need his pathetic tantrums to make it worse.
"I think maybe you should leave and cool off. She said climbing back onto the bed and lying on her side, her back to him.

She didn't want him to go, she wanted to hold him, but she didn't like him when he was in this kind of mood. It frustrated her, couldn't he listen to what she had to say for once.

Kayne's frown deepend when she laid back down with her back to him.

"What the bloody hell is the problem now? I said fine. Fine I won't go looking for trouble, fine I'll let you step in for me, and fine... I won't mock your bloody training," he said with high annoyance. He didn't understand what her problem was. He thought the argument was over.

Jess rolled over to look at him, the speed in which she did it making the room spin and her nose sting a bit.
"Yeah, but you didn't mean it." She said looking at him. "Something about what I did today, what I was supposed to do as a teacher bothered you. I love you Kayne, but I'm not going to sit around and take your misdirected anger."

She raised her eyebrows at him and turned back to her previous position.

Kayne blinked. That was all he could do. Did she just say what he thought she said? There was a long pause only filled with the quiet sounds of the TV drama she had left on. Slowly his feet started moving of their own accord and he walked around the bed to kneel down in front of her, catching her by her shoulder so she couldn't turn away again. He stared at her for a long moment. Her mussed curly hair, her honest green eyes, her poor bandaged nose, and he couldn't love more than he did right then. Slowly he rose to sit down on the edge of the bed and he picked her up to cradle her against his chest.

"You're right. I didn't mean it," he admitted softly, running a hand through her hair. "But I mean it now. And I'm more than angry... I'm scared too. He knows, and he could have you fired. He could easily attack you just like he did Kusani... or like you said, worse. I just... I can't lose you Jess. You know that," he said, looking down at her, worry and fear in his silver eyes.
