Does anyone here think sometimes that mental illness, or at least certain forms of it (bipolar disorder) might be more frequent in Jews than in other minorities? Sort of like how Tay-Sachs usually affects the children of Ashkenazi Jews.
I was just thinking about how mental illness is rampant on my mother's side of the family, and how my husband's mother is manic-depressive, and how it just seems like there's this stereotype of Jews as being "neurotic" (an archaic term, but still) and me thinking where the hell that came from? (Since most Jewish stereotypes come from somewhere, for example, the greedy Jew stereotype, while of course not true, developed because in old Europe only Jews were moneylenders because the Catholic Church said charging interest on money was a sin.)
I know this is going to offend people, but I just wondered if maybe bipolar disorder affected Jews disproportionately to the rest of the population (like a greater ratio of Jews having it than other groups of people).
If you just want to say I'm full of s**t, that's cool, but don't get mad at me. I ask because I'm bipolar myself and see a lot of Jews with depression, bipolar or other mental illness, moreso than I see others with mental illness. (A thought I just had -- maybe Jews are just quicker to seek treatment or to accept a diagnosis? Or to talk about it?)

As far as actual intelligence goes, I have to say that I disagree with you. A number of studies have shown that Ashkenazim are the most intelligent race; I'll let wikipedia do the explaining arrow http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashkenazi_IntelligenceIt is true, however, that Ashkenazim are more likely to have diseases of some sort than the average race. This is due to both: a) The very long period of time in which Ashkenazim have been marrying only with other Ashkenazim; b) Our intelligence itself. I once read somewhere that Tay-Sachs is at least partially due to Ashkenazic intelligence. As for depression, I agree that it is probably more common among us than among Goyim. Why? Not sure. If we really are the most intelligent race, then it may be because of that; Ernest Hemingway once said "Happiness in intelligent people is one of the rarest things I know," and I've gotta say, I quite agree. It might also have nothing to do with our intelligence; it could be just something in our genes from so man years of only marrying amonst ourselves.

I agree with proudly, I don't think mental ilnesses are more popular among jews, it is just common silliness that was though in the old time to be popular because of the large gaps between the education levels of the generations.
On the contrary, I think we have less than other nations... sweatdrop .

I also disagree; I don't know a single person in my family with some sort of mental illness, so maybe it's just yours? Dunno, but always remember- Jews are not superior to anybody else; that's like ideas from that idiot Hitler 3nodding xp

A number of studies have shown that Ashkenazim are the most intelligent race; I'll let wikipedia do the explaining arrow http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashkenazi_Intelligence Mental illness has nothing to do with low intelligence. Actually, many mentally ill are above normal intelligence. I don't know where that misconception comes from, probably from people getting mental illness and developmental disorders like down's syndrome confused. They aren't the same.

I don't have anything scientific to throw at you, but I have noticed mental and emotional eccentricities among the Jewry.
But I've also noticed that those are common in people of high intelligence, so I'm not really convinced it has anything to do with the Jew Gene.

Oops, sorry for the misunderstanding. sweatdrop In that case, I'd say it's probably either our intelligence that causes it or the Ashkenazic gene. *shrugs* confused

Well, people with IQ that is above 200 are usually retards, or have some serious physical challenge with emotions, speech, alertness, and other important body motorisms. Actually, mental ilnesses have nothing to do with intelligence, and even though it seems jews have a general higher intelligence than others, I haven't heard of excessive mental illnesses among jews... 3nodding .

Technically, 150 is the genius level and requirement for Mensa, this really cool program for people in the top 2% of IQ tests or something like that.
90-105 is about average; sometime 90-110, all depends on where you look.
Under 70 is technically "retarded" sweatdrop
All that said, IQ is not always an accurate measure of intellect 3nodding

Sort of like how Tay-Sachs usually affects the children of Ashkenazi Jews. tay-sachs happens. as far as i know, no mental disorders are associated with jews. (tay-sachs is genetic) Quote: I was just thinking about how mental illness is rampant on my mother's side of the family, and how my husband's mother is manic-depressive, and how it just seems like there's this stereotype of Jews as being "neurotic" (an archaic term, but still) and me thinking where the hell that came from? (Since most Jewish stereotypes come from somewhere, for example, the greedy Jew stereotype, while of course not true, developed because in old Europe only Jews were moneylenders because the Catholic Church said charging interest on money was a sin.) you can test for this sort of thing, you know. it's actually recommended before matches are made. charging interest to other jews is a sin. there are quite a few prohibitions that only apply to other jews, like lashon hara. however, charging goyim interest is perfectly fine. Quote: I know this is going to offend people i don't get offended. Quote: If you just want to say I'm full of s**t, that's cool, but don't get mad at me. I ask because I'm bipolar myself and see a lot of Jews with depression, bipolar or other mental illness, moreso than I see others with mental illness. (A thought I just had -- maybe Jews are just quicker to seek treatment or to accept a diagnosis? Or to talk about it?) or maybe you're just paranoid. don't worry about things like this. there's really nothing one can do about it, bar caring for oneself. everything is for the best.
