I've heard this one before a lot. To some extent, i guess it can be true for some people. i used to draw anime 24/7, but not so much anymore. I just don't have as much time, and realitic drawings appeals to my free time much more than anime drawings do. I still draw anime, like character drawings for my manga group's manga and such, and random avi art commissions that are piled up from 3 monthes ago. sweatdrop

What do you all think of this?

I don't really think anime is just a phase. Maybe it is for anime loving teens. I'm only 14, so I wouldn't know those things. ^^;
I used to draw realism in...6th grade (but they sucked), until my friend introduced me to anime and everything I draw now is anime. It could be a phase. I could like be drawing realism in my 20s. o_o (scary thought)

I think it is a phase, i used to love draw anime character when i was like 11. But now, i rarely draw them anymore...it is waste of my time and white paper (save the trees!) and my colorpencils!

yes it is just a phase. real artists draw real stuff or at least have the ability to draw other stuff besides anime.

I think thats an extremely stearotypist thing to say.
These guys ARE real artists, they have trained themselfs for years to become true artists, true the younger beginger artists tend to draw anime becuase its in a boom in the media. You can't say that its a phase... meny people make a living through this.
I draw "anime" but the style is semi realistic...
The term "anime" i think doesnt catagorise a whole style. there are so meny different styles.
Clamp,
Semi realistic,
Furry,
Yiff,
Yaoi,
Hentai,
Lestai,
Realistic,
Oekaki,
Chibi,
Echi.

I think we should stop trying to catagories styles as phases and such,
and artists as "real artists" or n00bs... it seem abit pretenious :/

Plus whats the say that these artists cant draw anything else.
99% of PRO anime artists can draw realistic, Anime, Chibi, architecture,
vehical, mecha.

Is it really such a bad thing to like to draw anime more then anything else...
I could say drawing realisticly is a phase... drawing architeture is a phase.
its a style of art which is older then diseny rolleyes ALOT of people dont now that.

thank you smile

for many people it is just a phase. i know a lot of people got into drawing becuase of anime. some stick to it and some don't. i went through my "anime phase". i mean, i still draw anime, don't get me wrong, but i pay more attention to other types of art because art schools don't really like to see anime drawings in your porfolio.

I think on an individual basis it can be a phase, but in the art world it's a movement. It will leave it's mark on history just like impressionism and modernism. It's a beautiful style of art, and I can't see it ever going out of style completely. No pun intended.

people love to defend anime, especially if this is their style of drawing. it's not the same the person who did character development for "samurai champloo" lets say, as a teen who copies them. the people who do these anime series study the human anatomy MANY YEARS before they get into doing their own brand of anime. the teens that copy them, in the other hand, don't.

if you're thinking of going into art as a serious career, there's no way anyone would ever hire you in the states if you solely did anime. if you had an all anime portfolio, most art schools would look the other way.

the problem with kids starting out drawing by referencing/tracing anime is that they don't know the basics of human anatomy or design. it's the same process as any other style of drawing, in order for you to distortion the human figure, you must be able to reproduce it well realistically. there's a reason why the people who draw anime don't usually do well in GOOD art schools, it's because their brains are pre-programmed to say
BIG EYES SMALL NOSE LITTLE MOUTH and of course, to get out of that mindset is very difficult.

Anime/manga was a phase for me, at least. I discovered other artists and started researching the Renaissance and animation, as well as Scott McCloud, so I had a wider variety of influences. Plus, I stopped watching anime and TV in general, and manga was too expensive for me at ten or so years old. xD

The internet became my tutorial temple at which I worshiped regularly until I became a slightly decent artist.

Next step, I'll take real art classes.

I think we all should get off our high horses and stop saying that "such" an art form is a phase an "Such" an art form is a true art form... art is art is art... Its extremely ignorant to class something as a phase. And i dont care if people say that it was a phase for them and nothing else, because if you look at how you draw now, you will find that your technique has a sense of anime to it, You will always have it becuase it was your first or it was a big love your art life. Look at how you sketch a head.. how to draw hands... Nothing is a phase in art... its just a progression. Im not saying everyone should start drawing anime now but please before you class anything as a phase remember it isnt...

I think of anime as a style not a phase.

Something you use when you feel like it.
I started drawing anime 6 years ago, I have'nt stopped that but I have'nt stopped doing realism and other styles either.

I've been bouncing back and forth betwee anime and realism latley, I do think anime is a phase, but it won't go away forever when a new "Drawing Phase" comes into play. I think Anime is a phase, because I see it as an animation form, and animation as many diffrent forms, and right now Anime seems to be a very popular form of cartoon animation. You may see it diffrently but that's how I feel about it. It is still art, just a diffrent form, there are many forms of art and you can't say one is harder then another because that is just an opinion.

Japanese animation as a style has always appealed to me. It was definitely a stepping stone into the world of art for me, but I don't think cartoons in general will ever be a just phase for me. I like doing realistic portraits of my cartoon characters every now and then to see how they develop in a more realistically human way. Having a knowledge of realisitic proportions definitely helps me in that way.

Also, has anyone else noticed that the definition of anime as a style, wherein the characters have "Big eyes, small noses, and little mouths," can also be applied to many of the animated Disney movies? And yet their style is not considered anime. Anime means animation. As far as there have been moving pictures, animation has been a popular means of conveying a story. I don't think animation as a whole will ever go completely out of style.
