Something I've got to get off my chest that's been started in the ED:M&R thread, DYBIM.
I think we need to look into the Church of Mod's position on trolling. I believe it's against the T.O.S. and thus, members of the Church of Mod more than any other Gaians should be doing their best to avoid the temptations to flame, troll and derail threads by well-meaning posters.
If I catch anyone trolling or flaming in here, it'll be messy and I hope that goes for the rest of the staff as well. It's just common sense that we don't troll or flame our own, but...I think this needs to extend to the rest of the Gaian community. It needs to stop and it needs to stop as soon as possible.
Please...as active members of the Church of Mod, I want you all to remember that you're representing the rest of us. You know all the times you've discovered that you agree with the position of a debater but don't agree with the phrasing or idealogy behind it? Ever said to someone (or wanted to), "Stop being on my side; you make my side look bad"? Take that into consideration when you're tempted to troll. Maybe someone else is thinking the same thing about you.

You make a good point.
But surely, some level of mockery is acceptable? In a fitting situation, it makes sense to be a bit snide at times.
What should be remembered is that one should not sacrifice post quality for trolling behavior.

What should be remembered is that one should not sacrifice post quality for trolling behavior. I think so, anyway. The great Moddess Noraboo has been known to mock her opponents, though she does not flame excessively. I think thay as long as we keep the insults to a moderate (no pun intended) level, we'll be fine.

Yeah. I feel rather guilty about the times when I troll, but only if in doing so I didn not contribute to the thread.

Part of what I'm driving at here is the difference between mockery and out-right rudeness. There needs to be a line between contributing something to the discussion in a lighthearted or snide manner and being rude and disrespectful to the original poster of a serious topic. I'm just hoping to remind people to be mindful of their actions, that's all. The great Moddess Noraboo has been known to mock her opponents, though she does not flame excessively. I think thay as long as we keep the insults to a moderate (no pun intended) level, we'll be fine. The general idea is to attack the idea, not the person. Particularly in ED-Politics, attacking the person (aka argumentum ad hominem) is expressly disallowed and will generally result in warnings and/or bannings. However, even there a line must be crossed before it's considered abuse. To use myself as an example, consider the following posts made in ED-Politics; The below (from this here) is OK... danjel This has been asserted by you and others in this thread with little supporting argument. This; evilprivateer I'm against public schools in general; private industry is better at managing schools and kids get better educations besides. Was as close as someone got but still didn't provide any evidence or argument as to why private industry is "better at managing schools". If you can't actually put forward an argument or something vaguely resembling an argument, then you do not belong in ED. Go to Chatterbox. The below (from this here) is also OK... danjel Game Phreak Zero When I made my comparison I was using the United States standard (seeing as this topic is dealing with the U.S.) so my comparison is valid. That's an intensely stupid way to analyse the media. If you were to compare, for example, Duchess and myself, to say that she is a "conservative" simply because she is more towards the moderate end of the liberal spectrum than I would be patently false. Equally, to say that CNN, CBS and other news sources are "liberal" simply by virtue of their being more moderate than Fox, when they're definitively not liberal would also be patently false. However, note that both the above toe the line very very closely. If you're unsure about a post you're about to make, contact an online moderator and bounce it off them first.

Mockery and "Flaming" are acceptable, as long as the methods of correction eventually lead the Troll towards Modliness.

Bacodus Mockery and "Flaming" are acceptable, as long as the methods of correction eventually lead the Troll towards Modliness. But how "eventually" are we talking here? It just worries me to see members of the Church flaming for no reason but the joy of flaming, rather than with a mindset towards correction.

There is a kind of trolling I detest.
It's the obscure dramatic exit.
Someone mentions vague affronts and hints that it's time for them to leave (CoM, M&R, ED, Gaia, Scientology...). There is then a dramatic wait for 'don't go' responses as well as 'what's wrong' responses.
If you wish to leave and be talked out of it, PM me.
If you wish to leave and not be talked out of it, PM me.
If you post a 'dramatic plea', I will grant your wish. You will be banned, your post will be deleted, and I will ensure that I forget your name within 60 seconds of my action. I will take absolute responsibility for anyone who objects to my actions. I am the villian.

Meghan Mitsumi So, what, I can't take sporadic breaks from Gaia now without being erased from the rolls? cry Of course you can. You just can't say it's forever and demand that you be pulled from the rolls because you can't handle the (elitism, ignorance, garden gnomes), and will likely leave gaia forever. I'm working hard to make a nice place here. If there are problems, take it to me or the gang first.

Meh. I never leave forever. I just leave long enough to collect my scattered wits about me. Then I'm right back in the fray, terrorizing n00bs and making all of you wish you'd never heard of me. twisted heart

But you don't stand in the middle of the guild and wave your arms and say, "I'm LEAVING now... because ya'll are being mean to me." and then stand around afterwards and wait for people to respond. 3nodding
