Yakuti had no idea why he had decided to come back to the elephant graveyard, he had heard of a pack of hyenas who lived here, but he had never prefered his own kind to any other animal... He just came because he felt like it I guess. As he walked through the graveyard where so many elephant skeletons now resided, he lay himself down inside an elephants skull, waiting for something to happen, he didn't know why he stopped here, it seemed like he didn't know why he did anything anymore.

A lone, grungy looking hyena was returning to the heart of the Graveyard, a limp hare hanging between her powerful jaws. Mafa, the alpha of the small, but determined pack in the area was finally back from her hunt. She had left a while ago, after depositing her son off with a goon of hers, leaving the two behind. Mafa was not a proud mother, she was not a fan of her own pup at all. Not that Mafa wasn't fond of young creatures; they were much easier to manipulate, to teach what needed to be taught, as she had done with Rasuli, a favorite of hers, and was going to do with their new wild dog slave. Mafa had plans.
About halfway to her den, the large female slowed down, ears perking and nose twitching. There was something close by, and it was not a familiar something. Further tests of scent confirmed that it was a hyena, and Mafa let her initial reaction to a stranger fade. Slowly, she trotted to the mouth of the skull where this new scent was located. Before her, was a pup, a blue hyena pup. Boy, she had been just stumbling onto little creatures lately, just her luck. The alpha tested the air, the pup was alone. Her cold eyes pierced the young pup, a solid glare forming as she eyed him over, blocking the exit from the skull,
"Who are you pup, and where are you parents?"

This much larger hyena's eyes told Yakuti that this was one who should be told the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, and also that it was no time to show that he was afraid.
"My name is Yakuti, and my parents aren't with me, my mother is dead and I don't know what happened to my father, he left when I was just born." He explained. He could be a very smooth talker, and it had its benefits, he was much less likely to be hurt if he was polite to his superiors, and this female was deffinately superior to him.
He put his head down submissively and waited for an answer, hoping that being alone wouldn't be a good excuse for her to kill him on the spot. Not that he could stop her, he was smaller, weaker, and had no where to run too.

Icy eyes narrowed as the pup spoke, the cogs of Mafa's mind turned, processing this new information. Mafa didn't know what to say, until the pup uttered those fateful words 'I don't know... Dead..." A sly grin crept onto Mafa's cunning maw; he was hers. With no parents to get in her way, she'd bring him into the pack, train him to her own standards. The pack needed all the members it could get. The pup was submissive too, a fact that greatly pleased the female.
"You know whose lands there are, pup?"
Mafa's head rose in dominance, her chest puffing out, the hare laying limp at her dusty paws. Her gaze intensified, perhaps she'd pair this one up with Mabozi, knock some sense into the boy. She already knew her son was a mental waste, but physical, he was something grand. Already, he was rather huge, and he'd grow to be biggest hyena around; she knew it. This would help her cause immensely. Without waiting for an answer, Mafa responded to her own question,
"They're mine, Yakuti, mine. And seeing you've no one to live for, I'm willing to take you in, alone, you won't survive out here long"
Mafa bared her long, yellowed fangs, snarling ever so quietly,
"There are scarier things out here than me."
In all reality, that was quite a lie. Out of all the inhabitants of the Graveyard, lion and hyena alike, Mafa was the worst out of them all. She'd waste a life without thinking, release her rage on anything, and she was fierce, too much so for her own good, and the good of others as well. Mafa's head dropped, grabbing the hare up and backing out of the skull,
"Come on then. From here on out, you're mine, don't forget it"
Mafa knew not the meaning of breaking news gently. She considered any hyena on her lands to be hers, newcomers included.

Yakuti raised his head and politely listened as the hyena asked a question and answered it for him, her lands? That was even more reason to obey what she said, she could send her subjects after him if she wanted, or at least thats the thought that went through the pups mind.
But no one to live for? That wasn't true, he had Jamaa and Temari, but he didn't think it wise to correct someone of her stature. Bus she was right, he was alone, neither of his friends was with him now, and he wouldn't survive long on his own.
Waaaaaait a minute... Hers?! Yakuti didn't like the thought of being owned, but the thought of the alternative, being dead, made him hold his tongue. "Yes, I'm yours..." Yakuti said, following Mafa obediently. He didn't even know her name yet, but he was to afraid to do anything other than what she asked.

A small smirk appeared on Mafa's face, though it soon faded, but it was obvious that she was content. There was always a quaint satisfaction with a new pack member, especially one so young and malleable, especially one she had found herself. The two walked along slowly for a bit, a stoney silence between them, before Mafa opted to speak,
"My name is Mafa, don't forget it, you'll be answering to me from now on, pup. There are others too, that you need to take heed to; Tibuka, Tuktu, and Rasuli, especially the latter, it'd do you good to take example from him"
Mafa huffed at the thought of Rasuli. He was her shining example of a good hyena, obediant, eager to please, hated lions with a passion like her own. Perfect. As they walked, her head nodded to the earth over her shoulder, the outer yard behind them. Her tone was lacking all emotion as she spoke,
"The lions live there, you see one, you'll do your best to kill it, you hear? We do not tolerate their kind here, /at all/."
She paused as she said this, her cold gaze piercing into Yakuti. That rule, was the most important of all.
"Association and friendly banter with the lions is highly punishable, so watch it"

Yakuti quickly registered those names in his head, especually Mafa's, it wouldn't be good to forget something she warned not to forget. He also took special note of Rasuli, once Mafa let him go where he wanted within the pack he would be sure to find him, he needed a good teacher if he was going to be a part of them...
As Mafa indicated where the lions lived, he assumed that they must be the "scarier than me" creatures, he had only met one lion before, and she had been quite friendly. He decided that it was best not to tell her that.
Highly punishable? That didn't sound good, he marked lions as "Greatest common enemy" in his mind and said "Yes Mafa, of course." As they walked along.

Mafa once again started walking, eyeing her land carefully as they strolled across it. No one else was around, and she wondered where the rest of her pack had tromped off to. Perhaps they were sleeping in their dens... Oh yes, dens.
"Up ahead is a large elephant skull, in the center of the graveyard, that is my den. You need to find one of your own, one that is not in the immediate vicinity of my own. I do not want you other creeping around and disturbing my peace. The geiser cave, to the east, is also off limits..."
Sure there were some that were allowed in and around her den, and those were the hyenas she had mentioned before, and her son of course, for she had no where else to put him. The cave was her hallowed ground, not even those she favored were allowed there. The last thing to step foot around it had been that pesky lion, and she had torn him up right proper.
"With food, you're on your own. Perhaps, find Mabozi, he always gets free meals, mooch off of him, and keep him off my back"
A playmate for her son would be ideal; for she couldn't stand being the object of his entertainment any longer.

Yakuti took all this information in, it was much more complicated living with Mafa than he thought to begin with... He also made it a priority to find a den of his own. He did have one, but it was all the way in the southlands, not at all apropriate for graveyard life. He also made extra sure to remember not to go into any caves that he didn't have permission to enter, it sounded very important to Mafa.
As far as the bit of food information, Yakuti was used to needing to do his own hunting, but never in a place so desolate, it could be very difficult to find anything suitable around here.
The idea of a hyena his own age was exiting, he had never met someone his size before, well, there was Goma, but he didn't much care for him. Mooching, however, sounded a bit below him, he wouldn't do that unless he was really hungry... But he looked forward to meeting this Mabozi, even if Mafa sounded annoyed with his presance. He continued to follow his new, uh, friend wasn't really a good word, master, there we go, his new master through the graveyard.
This wouldn't be so bad, it sounded fun really, he would pretty much get to do what he wanted, when he wanted, and heck, he would have his very own den, not that he minded sharing his current one with Jamaa of course, but it just wasn't the same.

Every once in a while, Mafa's head would swivel back, looking to Yakuti and making sure he was still paying attention, which he was, which was good. Mafa had taken a liking to the runt, not a strong liking, but enough to not treat him like total trash. Looking back ahead, Mafa huffed, continuing with the long list of rules,
"You are to patrol the packlands, making sure no scummy lions get past our borders, and if they do, you take care of them, with no mercy. You report to me as often as you can about your patrols. I am only one hyena, I cannot police this place alone. I will reward you for your good deeds, right now you are nothing, perhaps you can work your way up"
Mafa's head sternly turned to the pup. She did indeed reward those that did good; good in this case being the mauling or death of a lion. Last to be rewarded had been Tibuka, from the lowly pack member he had been, Mafa bumped him up into her superior league of goons... And had made him a nanny too, but that came with the package.

Yakuti continued to follow obediently, he began to think that it would be wonderful to be as powerful as her, to command such respect, he wanted to get high up in the pack, to become powerful.
Patrol? That sounded interesting, but the only thing she had been talking about was lions, what about other things? "Yes Mafa, no mercy." He said, "But Mafa, is it just lions, or is it other things that need to be gotten rid of also?" He didn't want to make any mistakes about killing anything he didn't have to, or letting something go that was supposed to stay out of the graveyard.
He continued to follow her, patiently waiting for an answer to his question, he also scanned the area every once in a while, looking for anything that would be suitable for his future den.

Mafa paused shortly, infront of the two, a large, loomon elephant skull. It looked ancient, but it was sturdy. Icy, aqua eyes gazed into the dusty innards of the skull. There were piles of dirt and bones scattered over the floor of the skull. It was obvious that something lived there, and it wasn't just a regular old something.
"This, is my skull. I'll be here mostly, if need be to find me, you look here first."
The female sighed, turning her body slowly toward the pup and sitting down, huffing out her nose. Her ears perked, remembering Yakuti's previous question. She ruminated on it for a bit.
"Primarily, you kill the lions, but anything vaguely assossiated with the Maziko pride should be exterminated as well. They've got quite the zoo on their side. Some hyena, side with them as well, one if them is striped, like a zebra, he is a traitor and an enemy, watch out for him. Anything else has the right to pass through, but not to stay"
Mafa blinked slightly, her monotonous speech coming to an end. She left out the part about the wild dog slave they had in their position. It didn't concern him yet, the pup was much too weak to assert his dominance.

Yakuti looked up at the skull, it looked like it would make good shelter, no wonder Mafa claimed it herself.
"Right, what if I find a hyena interested in joining the pack who is not striped like a zebra? Should I come find you?" He wanted to know what to do with non-pack members who weren't enemys, other than that he felt that he had a good understanding of the rules.
He looked around, there didn't seem to be much around as far as things to eat, and he was getting hungry. Maybe he should find Mabozi and get some of his food...

Mafa nodded solemnly,
"Yes, that would be wise. If you find a lone hyena, it will be your job to get them into the pack, recruit them. Though, they have to come through me to officially be part of the pack, as you did. We need all the number we can get. Gathering new members also gets you in good"
Mafa stood shortly after sitting, pink tounge flicking out and licking over her dusty chops. The packlands seemed to be stirring. With the arrival of Mabozi, then the wild dog, and now Yakuti, it seemed like the pack's period of inactivity was fading away. They'd be busy now, grooming the next generation for combat, for war. A grim, and rare smile rose to Mafa's jowls as she stared off into the horizon. As the thought faded, she looked to the blue pup,
"You can go now, don't forget the rules. Go find the others, they'll help you to get aquainted."

Good, Yakuti was quite pursuasive usually, he could probably get others to join if he found them.
Yakuti watched in silence as Mafa sat and smiled, he wondered what she was thinking of, but didn't ask.
"Thank you Mafa." Yakuti said as he turned to leave in search of a den of his own. "I'll be a great pack member." He added, he was pretty confidant now, he knew the rules, and planned to follow them properly. He would be high up in the pack in no time.
