So for my birthday my mom said she'd give me some money to buy some Broadway soundtracks.... but I'm not sure what to buy. And that's where y'all come in =P

I basicaly already know I want The Scarlet Pimpernel soundtrack.

But I can probably get tops one to two other albums... and I'm curious as to which I should get... I'll be buying them off iTunes so... I guess keep that in mind?

These are the ones I'm considering:

-The Producers
-Spamalot
-Jesus Christ: Superstar
-Thoroughly Modern Millie
-Miss Saigon
-Aida
-Anything Goes

If there's more than one version of the soundtrack, if you coudl specify which versions best that'd be fabulous =D

Any other good soundtracks you think are good, I'd be happy to hear about! I really like Rent, Wicked, Les Mis, Phantom, so I'm not into any particular genre of musicals if you will. I'm just looking for some imput of those who know a bit more about musicals than myself =P

Thanks tons =D

It never hurts to experiment, pick up something you haven't heard of before. Heck, that's how I fell in love with Starlight Express (which I highly recommend, no matter whether you get the New Broadway Cast or the Original London Cast).
Anyway, other ORCs I've picked up without knowing anything (or not much) about, but was happy with my purchase:
A Class Act - This musical tells the story of Ed Kleban, the lyricist for A Chorus Line, and is made up entirely of songs that he wrote before he died.
Applause - The musicalization of All About Eve, a little weak, but still has some nice tunes (I like "But Alive" and "One of a Kind" the best).
Scarlet Pimpernel - Mom gave me some money and said buy something, I picked it up since I'd been meaning to read the book, and fell in love ^_^
....that's all I can think of right now, since I generally know what I want, or I borrow from the library first...

The Producers is great, just make sure you get the OCR rather than the OMPS. I havn't heard the OMPS, but I'm just not a big fan of Uma Thermon's voice.

Spamalot: Hilarius. You'll laugh your a** off. If you like Monty Python and the Holy Grail, you will love this. I don't know if you've seen the show yet or not, but the soundtrack is just fabulous.

Aida: I love this soundtrack. I like singing along with it. The music is wonderful.

The rest of those you listed I either don't have, or havn't listened to enough to have a valid opinion on.

I don't know what all you already have for soundtracks, but here are my reccomendations:
Avenue Q: Hilarius, provided you don't mind a little lot of swearing. This soundtrack is definitly rated R. PG-13 at best. Mostly for swearing, sex, a few drug references, and blatant racism. And oh yeah. Gary Coleman.

Cats: Great, you know, if you like that sort of thing. I personally love the show. Lots of fun songs.

Chess: I guess if you can find it. Apparently it's pretty hard to come by. Fantabulous tho. It's like your average musical, an opera, and 80's rock concert all rolled into one. And that's just the first song. It was written by Tim Rice and the male half of ABBA. Oh, and you'll probably be wanting the 1986 London Concept Cast. This is one of my absolute favorites.

Into the Woods: yeah. 'nuff said.

Les Mis: It's pretty good. I havn't listened to it as much as I might have, but I'm sure there are plenty of folks here who will sing it's praises.

Once on this Island: This is my favorite musical of all time ever. Great songs, great talent, great story. Kind of depressing, but I guess you gotta actually see the show to get the full effect of the ending.

Rent: No self-respecting theatre kid can be complete without their copy of the Rent OCR. If you don't have it already, go buy it NOW.

Wicked: FAAAAANtastic. Great show with great talent. Tons of fun songs. Thorougly enjoyable.

If you're into dark comedy (aka black comedy) at all, Into The Woods would be excellent.

the new Sweeney Todd as well as the original are bad a**.
Chess, good luck finding it.
Assasins is supposed to be good.

I have Anything Goes. It is full of mystery let me tell you that. The title of the song may sound calming, but it's the opposite. Or vise versa.

Aida is fabulous, but last I checked iTunes doesn't have the cast album. If you get it, the New Age Masters version on iTunes is quite good, but it's a bit remixed and doesn't have the broadway cast. (I think it's an all-black cast on the New Age Masters one. *shrug* Plus it's out of order, I do believe.) The German cast recording is... In german (that's self-explanitory.) The concept album, if it's still available, isn't very good unless you like pop stars of the 90s singing broadway.

The Pajama Game is really excellent. Hernando's Hideaway is a hilarious song.

The Lion King is also good (different, but good.) It has several instrumental/choral tracks.

Wicked, if you don't already have it, is a bargain on iTunes. Rent has about six versions and if you buy the wrong one you're screwed.

Um... yeah. sweatdrop

I like:

Aida
Godspell
You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown (And Anthony Rapp is in the New Broadway Cast Recording!)
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat
Ragtime
Side Show (rather obscure, but really good!)
The Wild Party (Idina Menzel and Taye Diggs)
Thoroughly Modern Millie (The person who plays Millie is like the epitome of belters, except for Idina, of course x3)

Here are some of my favorites. Because I value my own opinion that much:

-Miss Saigon (I personally have the NBCR, but I'm sure the other versions are just as spectacular)

-Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (Funny, great music, and a talented cast. A few naughty bits, but mostly just an all around great recording)

-Sweeney Todd (I cannot say enough about Sweeney Todd. No matter which recording, you'll have a talented cast, incredible music, and an altogether wonderfully dark story.)

-Flower Drum Song (I personally have the RCR, but whichever you can find is good. This is a classical musical with great songs)

I seriously reccomend Annie Get Your Gun. Classic broadway show tunes, and a lot of fun. I reccomend the OBCR with Ethel Merman.
And from your list that you're considering, go for either The Producers, Spamalot, or Anything Goes. All good stuff.

What did you end up buying?

I would suggest Forbidden Broadway.

Out of what you put on here I'd buy Spamalot or Thoroughly Modern Millie.
