Okay well I've been comparing three movies I've seen recently all three were Broadway Musicals. I'm NOT critiquing acting, just the actual transfer of it.

Play 1: The Producers- Hard transfer since the play is very... um... typical flashy Broadway...there was a LOT of staring in the camera and show girls. And though it originally came from a movie, it was hard to take the flashiness of the musical to the screen. ....I love Uma Thurman *drools* Uuuuuuuma.... I'm glad it kept it's stagelike quality with the lighting and such but overall a hard transfer. But it was almost like watching a filming of the play.

Play 2: PotO- A slightly easier transfer since for all songs except Masquerade it's a very inward show, contained mostly within the actors and a very well maintained 4th wall, except Masquerade but you know, that was not so bad, and it was still well contained. Standalone as a movie it flowed smoothly from scene to scene. But damn I've seen it 10 times, I don't think I can watch it again. Plus my girlfriend hates it.. *sigh*...anyways the shooting was critical because it got so much more up close and personal than the play which is good with such a centralized story. (By centralized-not a lot of subplots)

Play 3: RENT- My only peeve? It's supposed to be a ROCK OPERA DAMMIT. People get pissy about Emmy and Patrick speaking their part in Masquerade, Rent is supposed to be 100% sung! ALL OF IT.

Okay, rant over.

This was just about the most amazing transfer I've seen. There was no play-like quality to it, very self contained. Plus the choreography that could not be done on stage was droolworthy! I mean the dream sequence for Tango:Maureen left me floored! Plus comparing a clip of the OBC doing La Vie Boheme and the movie, the movie won out... plus it WAS most of the OBC performing <3 <3 <3

Feel free to discuss any more musical -> movie transfers.

There's also Little Shop of Horrors, Bye Bye Birdie, and some other musical I know I'm forgetting.

Little Shop was the damndest thing. I saw it on Broadway just last summer and fell in love with it. The mechanics used for Audrey II (minus its final form since it was operated by people inside the puppet) and it's overall simple setting playing on the imagination just made me giddy like you wouldn't believe.

So, I bought the DVD a week later and haven't touched it since. Not only did they get the wrong woman for Audrey (dear LORD I hate that woman's voice!) but they changed up the songs and the ending. I know movies generally have a happy ending, but that ending made no sense if you've seen the stage show. The whole story is science fiction and usually with that you either have the half-assed happy ending or ultimate doom. Not geeky-guy-gets-girl-and-saves-planet.

Besides, Final Ultimo is my favorite song from the musicl. D:

The Producers: Never had a chance to see it on Broadway, but I'll agree. It was more filmed-from-stage than movie. Which, was fine. I have a copy of Jekyll & Hyde that is just a filming of the stage show. Same with my VHS of CATS.

PotO: not going there.. not going there..

RENT: I was actually happy with the film. It gave more depth and a better feel of the hopelessness of New York in the time it was written in. Despite it's talking and all (even lyric changes) it was a successful film in my eye. I just can't sit through it because I know I'm going to cry during the last hour.

*cries* Angel! Poor Angel! She was so my favorite. I think I might have to FORCE my gf to watch this since she was no interest and it... its was just a damned good movie! I have not cried that hard in a LONG time.

After she died, I was crying over every little thing. XD I came out of the theater sniveling and clinging to my mom.

I have yet to actually see it on Broadway this how I know my gf doesn't want to...

"Well I was putting together a list of shows I wanna see including Altar Boyz, Rent, Avenue Q, Wicked, Spamalot, and Sweeny Todd"

"I'll see all of them except Rent"

gonk She says it's cause everyone sings the songs and finds it obnoxious. My thought: They sing ig cause it's GOOD *cries*

I cried when Mimi almost died. I was panicing "NO! YOU CAN'T KILL OFF BOTH MY FAVORITES!!!!"

Did you know about all ther weird instances revolving around Rent's opening? The creator I wanna say had an aneurysim the night before it opened off-broadway and collapsed during rehearsal on the line "You're dying in America".
