Today in English, some girls were sitting behind me and decided to do a quiz, and one of the questions was 'The hanging gardens of ....' and you had to fill in the blank. Simple enough, but one would not have thought the question to dificult in itself, but to the masses it evidently is, either that or I'm seriouslly missing something. They asked almost everybody in the class what the answer was (though not me) and no one knew, so they typed in 'The hanging gardens of Eden'. Now, is it just me, or is that a really stupid thing to do?

Anyway, the topic is 'Is the general intelligence of people dropping or am I some sort of geek by knowing about the Hanging Gardens of Babylon?'

That's it! The Hanging Gardens of Babylon! I'm sure I've heard of that before. I never remember things when I need them. redface
That said, I've probably heard it in Chinese only, so I can't think of it when I see it in English.

Aren't the hanging gardens one of the seven wonders of the ancient world? Do people really not know that? Well, wait, I guess maybe not. When I was a kid (hear my bones creaking?) we didn't have pc's and quite so many of the distractions we have now - just Mighty Mouse cartoons, Operation, and Silly Putty. Oh, and Malibu Barbie, I loved her. If you put her in the sun she'd get a tan! Then you could take off her bikini and she'd have tan lines! ... Sorry. My point is that we used to READ to entertain ourselves. People don't read anymore.

Hmm. I consider myself rather well-read, and I've never heard of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. Seems like an odd thing to be on an English quiz. confused

DarkElf27 Hmm. I consider myself rather well-read, and I've never heard of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. Seems like an odd thing to be on an English quiz. confused It's not so much a literature thing as it is a history thing. They are classified as one of the seven wonders of the world. Here's an article on it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanging_gardens_of_BabylonIt is, in short, a very large building on top of which was planted various plants that grew and thrived, fed by an aqueduct. There's not a whole lot of proof towards their existance though.

I've heard of them. What's his name made him for his wife so she wouldn't be homesick or something like that.

The Hanging Gardens of Babylon, The Great Wall of China, The Alexandria Lighthouse and The Great Pyramids are four I can think of. Does anyone know the other three?

King Nebuchadnezzar (Morpheus's ship in the Matrix is named after him) built it for his wife about two thousand five hundred years ago, using the Archemedes screw to water the plants. Then again, my mother has a history degree and I've visited almost every Roman site in England, exluding Hadrian's Wall ironcially enough. Quote: DarkElf27 PostPosted: Sat May 27, 2006 9:04 pm Hmm.
