Malory watched the black Feli from his usual spot in the darkest, most solitary corner of the Feli House. While it was fair to say that he was almost always watching someone, it wasn't usual for him to see a Feli looking so down and thoughtful and... well, in all honestly... like himself. Rather, he was used to watching (with utter jealousy) as Felis mingled joyfully in the living room with their family, friends and significant others.
At least, he wasn't used to seeing Feli in down spirits without company of some sort attempting to cheer them up. At first, Malory merely assumed that this female's companion had simply not found her yet, and with this in mind, he continued his silent watching with only mild interest. As time passed and nobody arrived, however, he began to worry; he even caught himself continually glancing toward the door, expectant. More time passed, and finally he began to vaguely, just faintly wonder if... perhaps he should go talk to her?
...No, of course not. He had no experience with others, and she'd probably just be really crept out to know he'd been in the room the whole time watching her. Unless he told her he had fallen asleep and just woken up...?
No, lying wasn't right either. Frowning a bit, he sighed and settled further into his spot, determined to NOT move and possibly risk angering the female.
In the end, though, Whisper seemed to make the choice for him; when she begun to back into his corner, Malory found himself horrified and unable to move. He tried to slide away silently, but only ended up smacking into the wall, and quite audibly at that. Eyes wide in utter terror, he stared at her back and pleaded silently that she hadn't heard.

Malory lowered his head submissively, making it so he had to look upward to meet her eyes. He looked positively pathetic, creepy markings and appearance aside, and his quivering voice hardly did anything to help matters, "I'm... sorry. I have been here the whole time... I usually am... and I didn't mean to spy on you or anything, but you just looked so very lonely... uh, I wanted to go ask if you were okay, but I didn't want to bother you, but I suppose I've bothered you anyway, and I'm very, very sorry, and I'll happily go away, but, um... are you okay?"
By the time he'd made it to the end of his not-so-eloquent speech, he had backed up as far as possible against the wall, and sunk even lower to the ground. It was clear that he felt as though he'd offended her tremendously, and was probably only moments away from darting out of the room at top speed.

Initially, he seemed torn between the options of running away and staying, but ultimately Malory did remain where he was. Although Whisper's calming tone and words did help with this choice, he was mostly determined to stay for her sake. He had watched her before-- he had watched everyone at one time or another, really-- and knew this wasn't normal behavior for her. Maybe, just maybe, taking some time to talk to her would help return her to the way she was before? Although, really, anything short of her taking up permanent residence in his corner would be just fine.
Malory wanted to help, he really did, and he especially wanted to keep her from changing her initial opinion of him. Thus, when she responded to his question, he put a lot of time and thought into his response. Unfortunately, right around the time he opened his mouth to share said response, she continued with a question about him... and that took almost as much energy to consider, because he'd never really thought of anything like it before.
"I'm... I'm the way I've always been," he finally stated simply, and left it at that. "But you... how can you be certain you'll get over something you don't fully understand?" He clearly felt awkward asking this, but he could hardly help it, as it was pressing his mind quite uncomfortably, "You looked so lonely. Why aren't those two friends you're always with... well... making sure you're okay? Friends are supposed to keep a Feli from staying depressed too long, and getting too confused... well... or so I've come to think."

He studied her thoughtfully. "You seem strong, so likely, you will overcome it. Still... there is such a thing as being too strong. It appears as though you're the one distancing yourself from them, and not the other way around. If you're not careful, they might think you no longer wish to be around them... and would that truly be for the better? I can't understand... why you'd want to stay away from such good friends. It's not as though a trio cannot remain a trio, even once two of the members have begun a romance. I've seen that they can."
He frowned a little, his voice quiet and relatively lacking emotion, "Your secrets are safe with me, Whisper. I wouldn't tell anyone, even were there someone to tell. I do owe you my name though; it's Malory."

"It's equally nice to meet you, Whisper. As for listening; it's no trouble. I suppose you could even call it my best ability."
As for his social situation... well, he could easily tell her the truth, but Malory hardly wished for her sympathy or concern, so that was no good. Then again, he couldn't really lie, either. "...most of my peers already have friends, and I hardly wish to intrude upon them." He fidgeted ever-so-slightly, clearly not wishing to talk about himself. "And... I have a friend that I visit sometimes. I find her company to be a great comfort."

"You were different," he stated simply. "You were alone, and nobody came after you. Besides... while I admit I considered going to you, it was you in the end who walked into me, correct? Had you not, we likely would have never met. I simply..." He fidgeted, wanting desperately to change the subject, "...know that others would rather me not bother them."
Unable to think of any better way to alter the course of the conversation, he practically blurted out, "Your friends, though... shouldn't you go to them? I'm sure they're worrying about you right now... and you ought to be missing them just as much."
He realized a bit too late that that was hardly the right thing to say. In all honesty, despite how awkward it was to be forced to talk about himself, he did enjoy her company. He was nervous and doubtful about the whole thing, but deep down, he knew a friend was the thing he desired most. But now he was making it sound as though he wanted her gone.
'Malory, you damned idiot.'

He hadn't realized he'd jerked forward slightly with a much-too-loud "Um--" until after he'd done so.
And that sure left him feeling awkward. "Er... that is..."
Now he was the one making shapes on the floor with his paw, eyes averting to anywhere but her face, "I, um, didn't mean it that way. I just thought I was keeping you... or... something. You're welcome to stay, if you want."
Well, what a stupid-a** thing to say. 'Of course she doesn't want to stay, you moron.' Mentally scolding himself upon the realization that such a request was not only futile but pathetic, Malory grew silence once more, eyes resting solidly on the floor between his paws.
