Tovar wasn't entirely sure how he'd gotten into this. He'd thought they were going to the park, only to have Etain take a sudden detour ("Augh, don't run across the street without looking both directions first!") in quite another direction. So much for taking another route to the park. From now on, Tovar promised to himself that he wouldn't be either adventerous or trail blazing. It got him trouble.
--And had the effect of the little unicorn smashing his forehead up against the fingerprinted glass of a petshop, peering excitedly at the rolly polly puppies tumbling over one another in the cage behind the window.
Tovar could smack himself. They weren't getting a puppy, no matter what those watery brown eyes said.
"Tovar--"
"No."
"Can we just go look?" Etain begged, twisting his little blonde head slightly to peer up at his guardian, eyes wide and lips twisted into what might have been an unconscious pout had Tovar not known any better.
Tovar shifted. He squirmed. He fidgeted around where he stood, and instead of facing Etain's watery little eyes, he looked at the puppies in the window.
Big mistake. There slobbery tongued, big-eyed faces leered back at him through the window as two of the four crowded toward the glass, putting their big fat wet noses all over the window, licking at Etain's fingers despite the barrier between them.
Tovar bit down the groan that fought it's way up into his mouth, sighing through his teeth instead. "Alright; just for a little bit."
"Hooray!"

Michael was almost sure there was a list of places that he was not to take Earako when she had her young dragon in tow. He wasn't exactly sure why no one had given him said list, but he knew it must exist somewhere. And on that list, pet stores was probably written in big bold letters. Which he would have been happy to explain to Earako, if he could only get a word in edgewise. Unfortunately, that simply wasn't going to happen.
The albino vampire bat walked with one hand on the dragon's head, her other hand holding a rather large parasol over the two of them. For her part, Vimber seemed a bit skittish, hugging closely to Earako's side and shooting glances at the sky.
"Really, no one's going to eat you. I promise!" The girl was saying, her common half whisper carrying gently on the air. "And we'll get you something new and shiny, I just want to stop and look at the kittens first! Da' says no kitten's, says you'll eat them. I think he's being silly. You're a nice dragon, aren't you?"
A low hissing churr that could almost be a snicker, but who could tell with dragons? And anyway, they were already to the store. Nothing for it but to go in, and Michael just hoped nothing got broken.
Or devoured.

Puppies. Tovar was already steering Etain away from those, because he was almost positive that once the little boy saw those oh-so cute balls of floofy cuteness, all boundless with energy and all that stuff, he'd definitely want to hold one, which would lead to playing. Which would lead to getting attached. Which would mean a puppy in the house, peeing on his books and on the baseboards, knocking things over, and sleeping on his bed and getting hair everywhere.
No, they were staying away from the puppies.
"Rats!" Etain squeaked, plastering his little round face to the glass between himself and a whole host of hamsters.
"Sure," Tovar said, not bothering to correct him.
"C'n I--?"
"No."
"Aw-- drag'n!"
"That's a liza--oooh."
Tovar watched helplessly for a few seconds as Etain detached his face from the glass and beelined, arms flailing slightly, toward the dragon in the store's doorway. The little boy was apparently completely unaware of the girl at the dragon's shoulder, much less her guardian. After a few seconds of stupid staring, Tovar hastened after the little boy, catching him up before he could get inside the dragon's range of clawing...or biting...or whatever it was they did.
Etain flopped awkwardly in his arms, arms pinwheeling. "Tovaaarrrrr..."

It seemed that keeping the boy out of Vimber's range was indeed a good idea, as the young dragon did not seem all that happy at being approached. She didn't snap, but instead curled herself protectively around Earako's legs, glowering at the boy and his guardian with threat in her eyes.
The albino bat, unaware of Vimber's attitude, giggled and stroaked her horns. "Oh, don't be scared, silly. He's just a little boy. He probably wants to pet you!" Looking up at Tovar, she offered a sweet, gentle smile. "I'm sorry about Vimber. She's a bit shy. But she doesn't bite."
Of course, she had tried to bite her Da', that one time, when they'd hugged in front of her. Teeth had been shown and snapping attempted, an attempt that was abandoned after Da' hit her in the nose. Since then, she'd been good, if a bit cautious around Da'.
Michael, for his part, rolled his eyes and shook his head. There was no hope for it, really. Earako was head over heels for the bad tempered beast, and nothing he or anyone else could say would change that. At least the dragon seemed to keep it's temper in check as long as long as Earako remained 'safe'. And he couldn't fault the creature for being protective.

Tovar hesitated, eyeing the dragon sideways for a few seconds. Eventually, he deigned it fit to replace Etain's feet back on the ground -- vastly motivated by all the squirming of the child. The soles of Etain's Jelli sandals made a distinct plasticy 'clack' as they hit the cheap linoleum floor of the petshop. Almost immediately, Etain's first three fingers went into his mouth where he began nibbling at the edges. He watched the girl and the bright colored dragon with those large brown eyes for a few seconds before, carefully, he removed the fingers from his mouth.
"'Kin I pet 'im?" The mention of the dragon's gender -- a resounding 'she' that seemed obvious to everyone else -- had apparently alluded the small boy. He smiled at the so-called lizard brightly, before nibbling shyly at his own fingertips again.
Tovar reached down and carefully nudged Etain's hands away from his mouth. Bad habit, his brain told him automatically. Should make him stop. "Er, sorry about that," the young man offered awkwardly, looking first at the girly before averting his attention to the girl's parental unit. "He's a little..."
He shrugged, the comment's end hanging off lamely.
