Hamsa (ancient symbol used as a protective amulet by both Jews and Muslims), from the root word for the number five in Hebrew; the number five is considered to have special magical powers bringing good luck, and is represented by the 5 fingers of an open human hand in a motion of holding up an open hand to warn off an oncoming enemy. It is usually worn around the neck or hung on walls or over doors as protection from the evil eye.

I like how the hand has two thumbs xp
My mom owns several of them on necklaces, they are from her grandmother who feared the evil eye. She told my mom that the hand gesture used by texans and metal/rock fans was also used to ward off evil eye...not sure if it was used by jews though ninja

as with all symbols in judaism, this thing is pretty saturated with kabalah, which i don't do. thus, i can't really add more than naftali did.
nice pic, btw.
perhaps this could become a symbolism discussion?

I wear a hamsa on a necklace... One of my friends has this really complex one that's a hamsa with a star of David in the middle, with a chai making up the center of the star. It's pretty, because inside the chai is this tiny, bright blue stone that you notice before _any_ of the symbols.

I'm rather fond of Hamsas myself. I have one handing on my window and I have a little necklace. When I was in Israel my parents were going to get me a mogen david, but I was like, "I have like six of those. Can I get a hamsa instead?"

darkphoenix1247 err....sorry, I know this sounds really stupid, but why the fish? sweatdrop Fish are a Jewish symbol of fertility because one of the blessings Jacob gave his children was that they should multiply like fish int he sea (no I do not know the pasuk). Also, it is a sign of the story of Jonah, and of the messaih because according to some legends, the messaih will come in the form of a giant fish. Fish also appear because the fish is a zodiac symbol and many mosaics and paintings used fish as decorations. Not that it matters talking about hamsas, but I also know that in Christianity, a fish is used as a sign for jesus because the greek word for fish is used as an acrostic for Jesus Christ.

I've heard he's a huge fishy.. more like a whale 3nodding , we will eat him up rofl , and then we will make a large hut out of its skin because it will be so large and all the rightous people will sit beneath it rofl . Yona the prophet got swallowed by a leviathan, but I don't know if it was the same one sweatdrop ...
