How many of you play guitar? What style of music do you play?
Moreover...Can I get some tips? I'm trying to learn, but I have to teach myself because I can't afford lessons (my guitar was given to me by a friend, and I'm SOOOO grateful for it o.o)

I play. I just went through a huge blues/funk/rock phase, and I just found out that I can play ska pretty well. I'm trying to learn some classical as well.
I taught myself. The best way to learn is to find some simple technique and sheet music books (and maybe some tabs as well), talk to other players, and train your ears. You can learn a lot by listening to music. Granted, teaching yourself is a challenge. There are many setbacks (I'm not up to par with some other players, in terms of technique and knowledge of theory.) The most important thing is practice.

I play ska/alternative/metal. Hmmm if you would like to play metal I could try to explain pinched harmonics. Ska palm-muting is really well neaded. Alternative more chord swtiching. Would you like for me to teach you anything.(PINCHED HARMONICS ARE AWESOME)

Well, anything that's ska/punk would be greatly appreciated. I can sorta kinda pretty well palm mute, but I still think I should know more.
Right now, all I really know is power chords, palm muting, and just some simple little riffs and stuff.
Metal'd be nice too. ^^;

I started out on Metallica which I find easy to play, Nirvana is as well.
Rush is good for bass but if you want metal look up some Children of Bodom tabs for fun. 3nodding Temple of the Dog's Hunger Strike tab.

I play guitar too. My friend tried to teach me when I was first learning, but he wasn't all that good of a teacher. After that, I tried learning myself and it worked out a lot better.

Ok get the pick position it where your thumb is a little of the edge to where your thumb hits the string first.(it's easier to practice the middle string area) When you pluck it bend the string you should hear a very high pitched squeal.(Guitar players who use this = Kirk Hammet,Dave Mustaine, and "Dimebag" Darrel Abbot listen to "Cemetary Gates you'll hear it) Just to tell you it's alot easier to hear on distortion.

For harmonics my father has me use the metal bars at 5,7 and the 12th fret. I only use them for tuning.

I think its best to start out acousticly because callouses build up faster. Learn the cords and some scales and you should be set. you could always ask in the guitar fourms but many either give you the same common sense answer over and over again. What about a local music store for advise?

Honestly I have no idea, all I really do is pick the string wether your fingers or a pick but You let off your finger after picking to get 'Ping' sound. If it warbles its not tuned, there are certain sounds to be heard for that, I just cannot come to explain upon words.
