I love that book alot! It's my favriote book ever! I have read it 8 times! I qoute it all the time my family finds it annoying though...

I really liked the book, but for some reason I wasn't into the whole "he said she said" thing. I mean I would have liked it better if the narrator told us what was happening instead of the characters. I liked this technique at the end however, when Erik was talking to the persian. Also, the novel made me like Roul a whole lot better. In the movie he just seems like a big show off, but in the book he was more 3-D. Gaston Leroux sure made Erik seem creepy in physical appearance, I must say eek

I was thinking "how in the heck can you make it nasty so that readers of the present are grossed out? I'm too desensitised." Then all of a sudden "HOLY A THAT'S SICK!" Still sexy? I don't think so.

You can also find Susan Kay's Phantom online as well, but I haven't had time to look it up again (I lost my bookmarks).

Not only is the de Mattos a bad translation, it also liberally abridges sections as well.

There is always the link at the top of the page. I personally wasn't prepared for the description, and if you really think about the way Leroux!Erik is described it is incredibly sickening.

Personally, I like the gruesome descriptions of Erik. Having Erik flouridly described as a skeletal rotting corpse gets across exactly why he's been shunned his whole life- something that no adaption has been able to do when they pretty him up for the sake of grabbing empathy. And Leroux's descriptions are beautifully sickening, aren't they?

I can't find who translated my edition anywhere. =/ I hope I haven't been reading an incorrect one all along, even though that's most likely the case. -Goes off in search Woolf & Bair hardback-
I rather like Erik's disfigurement. Leroux is very descriptive. He's just too ugly to feel anything but pity and fear for, which is all he got. Plus he gets to cover it up with a fake nose and a totally cool mask. XD

PhantomoftheFox Leroux's descriptions are beautifully sickening, aren't they? Damned straight! Like I say, I thought I was desensitised enough to find him somehwat gross but not putridly scary. I was wrong. Phantomette I can't find who translated my edition anywhere. You probably have the Mattos edition, they don't have to credit him anymore because of some copyright laws or something.

When I get really into something, my imagination goes into overdrive and actually effects me. ( you should see me after nightmares O_o)
Anyway, while I was reading the scene where Christine is telling Raoul about Erik, it made me very very sick, and ruined the party I was at.
It also put me in an of mood, making me slap one of the guests I was with, and being a general b***h.
The crowd didn't help, but yeah... 'twas very enticing, to say the least.

No matter what Eriks apprence (or mental state LOL) I still love him. Yes he isn't perfect but lets face it he was not the most sane of people which covers some of his odd behavior. I love him teehee

It's impossible to do an exact literal translation that doesn't cut out any details, AND keeps the original feel of the words, AND makes grammatic sense in the new language. If you really want to read the correct version of Phantom, you'd have to read it in French. For those of us who can't do that, the W&B translation is the closest bet. (Although I'd recommend reading all the translations you can get and piecing together from that.) On another note, isn't it that Mattos translation that has the mystery line about the scissors?
