For those of you in school, what is your school's level of tolerance? For my school... 1. Despite having a high number of Wiccans, all Wiccan/pagan websites are blocked and the school adminstration refuses to allow a club or even discussion of Wiccan/paganism
2.Students are punished for not saying "Under God" by many teachers
3. A friend of mine was harassed for her religion (Wicca, she was punched and yelled at that she was going to hell, people stole her things) and I am frequently criticized for my lack of one (I'm atheist)

What kind of school are we talking here, like high school or college? There was no real difference between my old high school and my current college; the policy at my high school was a don't ask, don't tell. I only remember two really openly christian people who would try to get others to convert, other than that, it was really laid back in terms of religion; at least I never noticed much more than those two people. Now, at college, it's kind of the same, don't ask, don't tell. Most of the people I have met, and told I was a practioner of the occult, would be like "Oh, that's cool," and that's about it, no real intolerance; granted, I've only told a few people, though I'm sure, there have been many a person who have seen my books, and put two and two together.

In my high school, it's basically don't ask, don't tell. There are a relatively low number of pagans in the school, most are Christians, and some Hindus. Generally, tolerance is widespread, but I was critisized by a Catholic once. The policy is that no one gets involved over religious disputes. However, the Catholic was one of those "There are no other religions. Any religion other than Christianity is Atheism".
Don't people like that itch at you?

confused I know what that's like....try being neo-pagan looking into wiccan in a catholic school. Ug, it's not even funny, as I sit there first period of every morning and listen to my teacher rant about how "Jesus is the only good" "Listen to the bible" "Non Christians will go to Hell" "Be a good catholic" and various other phrases. Thing is, I don't want to switch school, all of my friends are there, and my parents want me in the catholic school system. They're quite against being anything other than catholic, and if you even mention the fact that Jesus might really not be a savior, they'll go insane. And then there's the lovely bible, which contradicts itself so many times I don't even know the gist of what they want to say.
Anything realating to nonchristian is banned, any symbols, books, clothing, etc. Because obviously, since it isn't catholic, it must be a "satanic cult worship". My friends pentagram was taken away at the teachers insistance it was "a dirty devil object" and that if my friend didn't shape up, she would go to hell, nevermind the fact we don't believe in hell... Despite this though, it's almost funny since two of my friends are Buddist, one is neo-pagan, a few are athiest, and a lot of the others don't belive in most of the things the bible says. Makes you wonder how many of these people are actually real Christians...

My highschool is pretty tolerant, I'm a Hindu and although I don't exactly keep it under wraps, I don't throw it in people's face either, and I generally don't have any problems (the fact that my sect considers Jesus an avatar of god, and I can commonly be seen reading and studying the bible in the halls probably helps). I know there are also a few Wiccans, Jews, and any number of other religions represented at my school, and nobody really gets harrased that much for their beliefs.

most of the kids at my school are either christian, atheist, or claim to be some religion or other while having no idea what it even is. then we've got some pagans, wiccans, and a large minority of jehovahs witnesses, most of whom are zealots. nobody really cares what other peoples religions are, except the jehovahs witnesses, who try to convert anyone that they think is satanic (a.k.a. any other religion).

There are a lot of very religious people at my school. I don't actually mind them so much, they tend only to preach at you if you go and strike up a conversation with them, and even then only if you specifically mention religion.
What irritates me is the even higher numbers of people who aren't particularly devout, but use religion simply as an excuse to discriminate. I frequently get told I'm going to burn in hell, I'm a satanic b***h, so on and so forth - and not by the religious people, but by those who simply don't like me and find that a handy way to harass me.
I and many others also get a lot of things thrown at us. Literally. That's part of the reason I'm cutting my hair short.
So, my school isn't particularly tolerant - ironic, considering that my city has one of the highest ratios of "alternative" religions per capita in Canada...

Catholic school... It's tolerant enough, I suppose. There are the good teachers, and then there are the bad ones. Most of the students don't care about religion one way or the other.
What really gets me are the kids who b***h about how TERRIBLE it is and how PERSECUTED they are because the Catholic school dares to make them show respect during prayer, learn about the doctrines of the religion, and so forth. I mean--the Catholic school system didn't just pop into being as a stricter version of a public school, it's in place to educate youth about Catholicism and instill what the Church believes are the proper morals. If you can't handle that, there are plenty of educational alternatives.

Amen to that. I have learned to detatch myself from "the persecuted". Melo-drama is all that is, and I have no tolerance for that behaviour, thank you.

Son of Axeman Schildkrote its a CATOLIC school. do they not understnd that word implies prayer and church and, dare i say it, religion? they should realize what they're getting into in going to a catholic school While that is true, Catholic schools almost always apply to high school. And, if it does, teens rarely have a choice in the matter. I know that I for one had a choice in attending my high school, but you're right. I think there wouldn't be as many students in my school if some of the public schools around here (such as, unfortunately, the one I'd have to attend) weren't so terrible. That might be part of the problem, actually--when parents stop thinking of the Catholic school system as an institution that teaches faith and instills morals along with education, and start considering it as a way to escape a troublesome school district.

I go to a public school and most I think are either christian or atheist. Usually there isn't much fights or serious problems with religion there. Except for arguments in the classroom or something like that.
