I have played guitar for some time now, writing my own stuff, doing covers, but I never really got into the technical aspect of guitar playing and I would love to. I wanted to take a music theory class in school but they wouldn't let me and I don't have money for lessons.
Can anyone point me to a free easy to understand website to learn the basics of music theory? Thank you much.

hylianhero27 http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/lessons/ This site is handy, but I'm curious as to why they didn't let you in that music class... They said I needed to have already taken a music class in highschool. And I did not, but I don't see why I couldn't have taken the class. Pain in the a**. But thanks for the website, it looks very helpful.

That's the same way my school is about it for the most part. However, if you talk to the counslers, you could get in anyway. Then again, we had a really small class anyway. Next year there is going to be around 7 kids in the class.

burn in hell. jk, but i think its funny that people dont acknowledge how much theory does for you. you couldn't play guitar without theory. even a simple chord progression takes a certain amount of theory. maybe not a lot, but its there.

The Roy isn't very nice. Theory, however, is wonderful. Much easier to describe what you are doing to other players when you both know theory.

Learning technical things about music can be tricky if you go on a website, so if you can't figure it out, a guitar teacher can verbally and visually show you, and it'll make A LOT more sense

I've taken several music theory "school" classes and you will not learn guitar theory in those classes!!!! Especially in high school! There are a ton of sites but I think this one is the best www.musictheory.net.

I learnt a lot of theory from magazines. "Total Guitar" has taught me at least half the theory stuff I know.
