i've found some sushi to try, i like it 3nodding
the varieties in the poll are what is in the selection i get, so they're all i've been able to try so far, tell me about the other sorts you can get and what they're like blaugh
i like the California rolls best, but what is surimi? i've never heard of that before sweatdrop
i have questions about wasabi now, what actually is it? when i tasted the little sachet in my box, i got a hit of sweetness before the heat of the horseradish took over, so is wasabi itself sweet? there's no added ingredients in it, just wasabi and horseradish, so i'm quite intrigued ninja

My experience with sushi was positive. I had the salmon and tuna and really liked it. No fishy taste at all. There is more sticky rice than the actual piece of fish. It's also much better for you than red meat.

I love sushi! In fact, if I had flown to Jaz's wedding, we would have tried to go out for sushi together! heart
My favorites are spicy tuna rolls, philidelphia rolls (with cream cheese), and salmon or tuna nigiri (that's the big fish pieces on rice right? not the rolls?) I haven't had the opportunity to try a great variety of stuff yet, but I like everything I've tried!

fawN, do you eat the nigiri with chopsticks? i can pick it up with them but i can't grip it so i can bite it, and that's far too big a size to put in your mouth in one go sweatdrop

I've tried quite a few--don't get octopus, it's mushy. I like eel a lot--try caterpillar rolls, they are eel and avacado, but share them with a friend or only get that, because it's a large amount.

California and Dragon Rolls are great. There is one (I think) called Spider Roll that is pretty good. The main ingredient in those are tempura fried soft shell crab. Alot of times the ingredients in a roll can vary from chef to chef and place to place, too. Wasabi is really really good if you stir some soy sauce into it and turn it from a paste to a sort of thin sauce consistency.

Poppetta fawN, do you eat the nigiri with chopsticks? i can pick it up with them but i can't grip it so i can bite it, and that's far too big a size to put in your mouth in one go sweatdrop I do. The best way to pick up sushi with chopsticks (even for the rolls) is to hold the chopsticks at a horizontal angle, parallel with the table, instead of vertically, and then pick up the sushi piece. Then you can kind of bite the sushi or stick it in your mouth (and the chopsticks as well!) and then withdraw the chopsticks after. And it never hurts to use your other hand for stabilizing if it's a big piece. whee Manatee Mac Wasabi is really really good if you stir some soy sauce into it and turn it from a paste to a sort of thin sauce consistency. Wow, so you actually add soysauce to the wasabi instead of the other way around? eek I usually add a few chopstick pinches of wasabi to my rectangular dish of soysauce and then stir. Now you're making me wonder if you're WickedWasabi, Mac!! surprised (or did the thread say Wasabi was really female? I forget.)

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh rofl I love sushi and will try anything. 4laugh My (current) favorite is ikura with quail eggs, they're loooooooverly if you like salt although the quail egg cuts it down considerably and makes the whole thing smoother going down. *hangs head* I also love spicy tuna or scallop salad handrolls, salmon skin, fatty/tuna belly and rainbow rolls (different types of raw fish and eel on top of a California roll).
Surimi is the name for the fake crab logs that some restaurants use, although I've rarely seen it listed that way. Usually they just say "imitation crab" since they use different types/mixtures of fish to make it.

Yay! DMentia! Great to see you here and posting!! 4laugh heart
I totally need to try more varieties of sushi, but I rarely get to have it because hubby doesn't like it, and when I DO go, it's so pricey I can only get one or two things.
I like quail eggs as it is (with the outsides being so much firmer than chicken eggs, and the insides so much smoother!) so I'm sure I'd like those in sushi too!

MysticfawN Yay! DMentia! Great to see you here and posting!! 4laugh heart Hiya hon! *hugs ya* LMAO, yesh.. it took me long enough, didn't it? I keep getting lost in there though, there's so many fun threads to reply to and peek in. mrgreen How come the hubbles doesn't like sushi? He doesn't like the taste/texture or the whole "raw fish" thing is gross? *grins* Most of my female friends tend to be more adventerous than the guys (they're happiest with steak and potatos razz ). I cheat sometimes (and there's tons of asian markets around) and make a bowl of "california roll" by tossing the ingredients together. You can buy the sushi rice vinegar or leave the rice plain, then toss in some canned crab meat or the immitation crab meat, chop up an avacado, shred a couple of pieces of seaweed (so around $10 total) and toss with cooled steamed rice. It's not as elegant as rolling your own maki (those end up around five pounds when I make them at home anyway razz ) or tastes as good but eases the cravings a bit and you can have as much as you want wink

I have to say, that "cheat" sounds pretty good to me (especially considering I'm too lazy to try to make it myself...)
