Character Information

Name: Mercedes Gattas

Age: 37

Occupation: Paleontologist (specializing in rodents)

Likes: Her work, bland colors, spicy food, 80's rock

Dislikes: Rap, neon colors, modern morality, making people angry.

Appearance: Mercedes is naturally tall and spindly, with short black hair tied back in a ponytail and slightly washed out hazel eyes. Her skin is rather dark, due to both her Hispanic background and time in the sun.

She is not a pretty woman, but not horribly ugly. She would be completely unremarkable except for that she gives an immediate impression of awkwardness.

Her clothing is eternally ill-fitting, not so much because of a lack of fashion sense but because nothing seems to suit her. She has given up with fancy clothing but simply wears flared jeans and a dark-colored loose t-shirt. Footwear consists of dirty white tennis shoes.

Personality: Mercedes is an indrawn, though not anti-social, woman. She is the type that tries to both please people and blatantly speak her mind at the same time. It doesn't always work out, to say the least. Some people simply label her a hyprocrite because of this.

She strikes many people as the complete opposite of the stereotypical scientist. Although she does enjoy her work, she almost never talks about it with others. She knows all to well how some people just don't find hamster eating habits exciting.

Despite her efforts, Mercedes has a hard time relating to people. One way or another, she feels like she is viewing the rest of the world through a glass window, and she is not actually involved.

History:
Mercedes was born in St. Louis, the only child of Olivia and Marcus Rodriguez. Her life was uneventful at the beginning - standard education, good parents, middle-class in the money department. When she reached college, she began dating an journalism major two years above her named Marcus Gattas. She graduated with a PHD in paleontolgy, while Marcus was happy with simply a Bachelor's. They were married the year after they graduated. After two years, they had a son that they named Crispin. He was an energetic child, and the joy of their lives.
Their marriage was not perfect. Mercedes was a frequent traveler. She was not one for lab work, but instead enjoyed being out in the sun doing a 'dig'. Once she finished one, she was always tempted to fly straight to the next one. But Marcus liked to remain stationary, to simply write his articles in the privacy of their home. This caused conflicts that put strain on their marriage, often resulting in arguments that little Crispin would hear.
When Crispin was seven or so, Mercedes was doing a dig in Venezuela, looking for fossils of the hoberomys pattersoni. It was after one of her more vicious fights with Marcus, one that left them both angry and hurt. She was actually resting in her tent when she received the call.
Marcus was feeling guilty after the fight, and had boarded a plane with Crispin to come apologize in person. But something had gone wrong...and the plane had crashed. There were no survivors.
Mercedes was distraught and came to believe that the entire episode was her fault. She took a permanent leave of absence from her job and returned home to St. Louis. She suffered a nervous breakdown soon afterwards and contemplated suicide. Counseling left her feeling like she would live, but not much better.

How did she get on the Island?
It hasn't even been a full year since the death of her husband and son, so her grief is still fresh. Family suggested she take a vacation somewhere warm and sunny to try to recover a bit.
It was about then that Feral Labs noticed her file. They sent her the free vacation package, as so many were given before, and she took it up without much thought. Two weeks of sunshine couldn't hurt, could it?
She would be there a bit longer than that.

Why this serum?
The 'good doctors' have been itching to use the guinea pig serum for quite some time, just because of the sheer irony of it. Yet there hasn't been a tempting subject to use it on. But when a scientist - a scientist specializing in rodents - comes along, the temptation is too great.

The Guinea Pig

User Image

Guinea pigs are hystricomorph rodents (related to chinchillas and porcupines) that originated from the Andes Mountains region of South America. They were probably first domesticated by the Indians of Peru, who used them for food and as sacrificial offerings to their gods. In the 16th century Dutch explorers introduced guinea pigs to Europe, and selective breeding and captive rearing began in earnest.

Guinea pigs are very popular pets because of their availability, docile temperaments, tendency not to bite or scratch when handled, and relatively clean habits. They are not long-lived, which can be disconcerting to owners (especially children). Many parents, however, believe that having their children experience the relatively short period of companionship and subsequent is a meaningful way to expose children to the "ups and downs" of life.

In their natural habitat, guinea pigs live in open, grassy areas. They seek shelter in naturally protected areas or burrows deserted by other animals. Guinea pigs are sociable animals and tend to live in groups. They are strictly herbivorous (plant-eating) and do most of their foraging for grasses, roots, fruits and seeds in the late afternoon and early evening.

For many years guinea pigs have been used in biomedical research laboratories. Consequently, their medical problems have been traditionally approached on a group basis, rather than on an individual basis. As a result, very little practical information exists on the medical care and treatment of individual pet guinea pigs. Even less information is available to owners on the responsible home care of guinea pigs and recognition of their medical problems.
